Die Entwicklung des Mitbestimmungsrechts in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland war seit dem Kriegsende immer wieder von heftigen Auseinandersetzungen gepragt. Auch von evangelischer Seite wurden im Untersuchungszeitraum immer wieder, und insbesondere im Vorfeld der verschiedenen Gesetzesinitiativen, Ausserungen zur Mitbestimmungsdebatte getatigt. Dies geschah sowohl durch offizielle Stellungnahmen als auch seitens verschiedener evangelischer Arbeitskreise und zahlreicher Einzelpersonen. Das Verhaltnis von Protestantismus und Mitbestimmungsdebatte ist von besonderer Tragweite, da die Kirche von der Mitbestimmungsfrage nicht nur mittelbar als sozialethische Instanz beruhrt, sondern auch unmittelbar als einer der grossten Arbeitgeber des Landes von den damit zusammenhangenden staatlichen Regelungen direkt betroffen war. Aus diesem Grund zeigt Rene Smolarski auf der Basis ausgewahlter evangelischer Stellungnahmen die Ambivalenz der kirchlichen Position in dieser Frage auf.

1m April 1984 haben die fOnf fuhrenden Konjunkturforschungsinstitute der Bundesre publik Deutschland den konjunkturellen Aufschwung auch wissenschaftlich besHltigt: Die Konjunkturerholung habe sich inzwischen so weit durchgesetzt, daB sie sieh selbst ohne staatliche Hilfe trage, heiBt es in ihrem gemeinsamen Fruhjahrsgutachten 1984. Zuversiehtlich auBern sieh die fOnf Institute (DIW-Berlin, Ifo-Munchen, RWI-Essen, HWW A-Hamburg, IfW -Kiel) auch uber den weiteren Konjunkturaufschwung. Fur 1984 wird mit einem Wirtschaftswachstum von real drei Prozent, etwas zuruckgehender Ar beitslosigkeit, gleiehbleibender Preisstabilitat und Verdoppelung des auBenwirtschaftli chen Leistungsbilanzuberschusses auf 20 Milliarden Mark gerechnet (o.V. 1984b, S. 1). Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Einschatzung konnte die SchluBfolgerung gezogen werden, die hier vorgelegten Beitrage zur betriebswirtschaftliehen Krisenbewaltigung kommen zu spat; die Krise ist im Prinzip bewaltigt. Selbst wenn wir als Herausgeber diese Einschat zung teilten, brauchten wir als Betriebswirte dennoch nicht urn die Aktualitat dieses Sammelbandes zu furchten: Zum einen kann es ja auch in guten volkswirtschaftlichen Konjunktursituationen erhebliche Krisen in einzelnen Branchen und Betrieben geben (vgl. Bratschitsch 1981, S.V); zumal in wachsendem MaBe die Gesamtkonjunktur, die Branchenkonjunkturen und die Unternehmungskonjunkturen immer mehr auseinander fallen (Mertens 1981, S. 1). Zum anderen gilt es gerade in "guten Zeiten" Instrumente zur Fruhdiagnose und Therapie von Unternehmungskrisen zu entwiekeln (vgl. Brat schitsch 1981, S.V).

How are German capitalism and German business management to be understood from the perspective of Japan? Both Germany and Japan as defeated nations in World War II received significant American leadership and support after the war. Both countries developed their enterprises, industries, and economy by deploying and adapting technology and management methods from the United States while establishing systems of industrial concentration in their own ways. By these means, both nations became major trading countries. However, current economic and business conditions differ greatly between Germany and Japan. In trade, American influence on Japanese business is still strong. Japan could not and cannot establish a complementary relationship with American industrial sectors and their products in the American market. In addition, a common market structure like the E.U. does not exist in Asia. In contrast to Japan, Germany developed independently from the American influence and became part of a well-integrated regional economy. What were the driving forces that created those differences? That question is approached from a Japanese point of view in this book, based on the assumption that the origins of distinct characteristics of German business management after World War II were developed in the 1950s and ’60s. The book analyzes the transformation of business management in Germany and explains the characteristics and structures of German management.
