Wisdom's Wonder offers a fresh reading of the Hebrew Bible's wisdom literature with a unique emphasis on "wonder" as the framework for understanding biblical wisdom. William Brown argues that wonder effectively integrates biblical wisdom's emphasis on character formation and its outlook on creation, breaking an impasse that has plagued recent wisdom studies. Drawing on various disciplines, from philosophy to neuroscience, Brown discovers new distinctions and connections in Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes. Each book is studied in terms of its view of moral character and creation, as well as in terms of the social or intellectual crisis each book identifies. Most general treatments of the wisdom literature spend too much time on issues of genre, poetry, and social context at the neglect of discussing the intellectual and emotional power of the wisdom corpus. Brown argues that the real power of the wisdom corpus lies in its capacity to evoke the reader's sense of wonder. An extensive revision and expansion of Brown's Character in Crisis (Eerdmans, 1996), this book demonstrates that the wisdom books are much more than simply advice literature: with wonder as the foundation for understanding, Brown maintains that wisdom is a process with transformation of the self as the goal.

Wisdom literature, asserts the author, is grounded in the theological tradition of creation. For the Wisdom writers of Israel and early Judaism, God is the maker of heaven and earth, whose creativity both forms and sustains the world. The very nature of God is to create life, to sustain it, and to ensure that it flourishes. God's originating acts of creation and sustaining providence provide the basis for faith, worship, and ethics. Leo G. Perdue grounds his reconstruction of the theology of Wisdom in the creation metaphors residing witin the language of the sages--metaphors that derive from Israelite creation traditions and the mythologies of the ancient Near East. He focuses on the differences and interactions between two sets of creation metaphors: those dealing with the creation of the world (cosmology), and those centering on the creation of humankind (anthropology). The contemporary importance of the creation theology of Wisdom literature, says the author, is that it can move the church away from one-sided emphasis on salvation history and eschatology to a serious participation in environmental concerns and social justice. Wisdom and Creation provides a thorough yet accessible discussion of the theological message of this important part of the Bible.

This book offers a new theology of nature based on wisdom christology. The author argues that an exaggerated emphasis on mere information has deprived modern science of its capacity to respond adequately to the moral dilemmas resulting from our increased power over nature. Dr. Deane-Drummond proposes a theology of creation that is in tune with recent developments in biological science, including genetics and ecology, and points to a new ethical approach to developments in biological science.Clearly and accessibly written for those without a science background, this is a truly multi-disciplinary study, drawing on Christian theology, biological science, feminism, biblical studies, philosophy, ethics and sociology.

Origen was the most influential Christian theologian before Augustine, the founder of Biblical study as a serious discipline in the Christian tradition, and a figure with immense influence on the development of Christian spirituality. This volume presents a comprehensive and accessible insight into Origen's life and writings. An introduction analyzes the principal influences that formed him as a Christian and as a thinker, his emergence as a mature theologian at Alexandria, his work in Caesarea and his controversial legacy. Fresh translations of a representative selection of Origen's writings, including some never previously available in print, show how Origen provided a lasting framework for Christian theology by finding through study of the Bible a coherent understanding of God's saving plan.

This work provides an overview of attempts to assess the current condition of the concept of creation order within reformational philosophy compared to other perspectives. Focusing on the natural and life sciences, and theology, this first volume of two examines the arguments for and against the beauty, coherence and order shown in the natural world being related to the will or nature of a Creator. It examines the decay of a Deist universe, and the idea of the pre-givenness of norms, laws and structures as challenged by evolutionary theory and social philosophy. It describes the different responses to the collapse of order: that given by Christian philosophy scholars who still argue for the idea of a pre-given world order, and that of other scholars who see this idea of stable creation order and/or natural law as redundant and in need of a thorough rethinking. It studies the particular role that reformational philosophy has played in the discussion. It shows how, ever since its inception, almost a century ago, the concepts of order and law (principle, structure) have been at the heart of this philosophy, and that one way to characterise this tradition is as a philosophy of creation order. Reformational philosophers have maintained the notion of law as ‘holding’ for reality. This book discusses the questions that have arisen about the nature of such law: is it a religious or philosophical concept; does law just mean ‘orderliness’? How does it relate to laws of nature? Have they always existed or do they ‘emerge’ during the process of evolution?

-- Verse-by-verse commentary of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon -- Much research and detail on the life of Solomon is presented -- An in-depth study for the serious student of the BibleIsn't it amazing that a man who had 700 wives and 300 concubines and ruled a country for 40 years still had time to write three of the most profound books of the Bible? Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon all show marks of divine inspiration, and each can be a blessing to the reader, but why would God choose a man who turned to idolatry to write these books? Dr. Henry Morris, author of the commentaries Treasures in the Psalms and The Remarkable Record of Job, addresses the enigma of Solomon and presents a verse-by-verse commentary on his writings. Having studied the Bible for 60 years, Dr. Morris' wisdom is also quite remarkable, as you will quickly learn as you read The Remarkable Wisdom of Solomon.

This monograph interprets the theme of election in the book of Sirach. Previous scholarship has often understood Ben Sira s worldview to be dualistic, and has approached the sage's correlation of Wisdom and Torah as either a nationalization of Wisdom or a universalization of Torah. By probing Ben Sira s ideas about election, this book suggests that Ben Sira does not collapse the traditional sapiential dichotomy wisdom/folly into a dualistic worldview, and that his understanding of the relation between Wisdom and Torah proves to be far more subtle than previous interpretations have allowed. The study demonstrates that the concept of election enables a profitable discussion of the relation of Wisdom and Torah in the thought of this pivotal Second Temple sage.

This multi-academic perspective on contemporary environmental issues reminds us of our oneness with the natural world and what that calls us to as moral creatures. Fashioned as a series of stories based on the model of biblical narrative, these seemingly multivalent voices and perspectives are joined together with biblical stories, references, and theological reflection to create in All Creation Is Groaning a seamless story that is both provocative and revelatory. All Creation Is Groaning provides a clear Vision of living life in a sacred universe. This Vision is linked to the biblical Vision of justice and righteousness for all of creation, and humankind's responsibility to hasten the Vision through a call to ethical practice. Critical and hermeneutical, this book reflects an interdisciplinary approach so as to build bridges of understanding between the Bible and contemporary disciplines." This book was written after many years of research and comparison between the Torah, Kabbalah, and science books. I started on this subject following a personal crisis. I had the opportunity of seeing people and phenomena beyond those experienced in the daily life. "Go out of Egypt," I was told. The meaning of it was to step out of the material routine, and start dealing with spirituality. I tried to examine all new information and study on the topic of the creation of the world, and the connection between the Torah and science. I searched for proofs to this connection in the most thorough way possible. Was the world created by accident, or with an initial thought? What was the world created for? Is the Big Bang the beginning of creation, or was the world created much earlier? What is the universe made of? What maintains it? What will happen to the universe in the future? When was man created? Was man created from the monkey? Is there any kind of connection between all of humanity? How can you even research creation? Can you possibly prove the existence of God? How can you even reach Him? Who can provide answers to that? The answers to these questions are "hidden" in the Torah. The Torah is a secret language. The Hebrew word for "world", Olam, hints on the words: Hidden — Ha'alem, Ne'lam. Scientists study the world every day, and the results of their studies are surprisingly similar to the prophecies of the Torah. Jewish thinkers, world intellectuals, and tzadikim, are able to find a connection with the hidden worlds. They told us that there is a Creator to the world — God. The world was created with initial thought: The thought of creation. Man has a special and unique role in the world; to connect with the Creator by thinking of, and helping his fellow men, "Love your neighbor as yourself". The nation of Israel is a "bridge" that connects the material world with the Creator. Will we successfully climb the right bridge? Will man connect the world and humanity? Will the nation of Israel successfully carry out its task? "Love your neighbor as yourself"... this is how the soul is built. Let's connect to it... Good luck.
