ANCIENT GREEK PHILOSOPHY ~ Collective Wisdom of 26 Greek Thinkers ~ “To find yourself, think of yourself”. These are the words of Socrates, one of the pioneers of Greek Philosophy. Philosophy comes from the Greek words “Phylos” meaning - to love and “Sophie” meaning - wisdom, thus literally meaning “to love wisdom”. Origin of Philosophy can be traced back to Ancient Egyptian and Indian Civilizations. Even before Greek Philosophy evolved, Indian Philosophy had taken shape and flourished widely. Ancient India, once a commercial hub, had trade connections with many other countries. Ideas and thoughts were also traded and had influenced much in Greek philosophy. Philosophers taught rhetoric, astronomy, cosmology, geometry to their disciples. Their teachings were based on arguments or teachings about any subject in Universe. They have contributed much to the society and their quotes are thought provoking. This book makes a modest attempt to present you with the quotes of Greek Philosophers -Socrates, Thales, Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras, Anaxagoras, Epicurus, Democritus, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Chrysippus, Antisthenes, Gorgias, Empedocles, Anaximander, Cleanthes, Diogenes, Zeno of Citium, Protagoras, Epictetus, Xenophanes, Zeno of Elea, Theophrastus, Xenocrates, Melissus of Samos and Proclus.

"Laches" is a Socratic dialogue written by Plato. It examines the question of true courage in the form of the dilemma of two men. Lysimachus, the son of Aristides the Just, and Melesias, the son of the elder Thucydides, two aged men who live together, are desirous of educating their sons in the best manner. Their own education, as often happens with the sons of great men, has been neglected; and they are resolved that their children shall have more care taken of them, than they received themselves at the hands of their fathers. At their request, Nicias and Laches have accompanied them to see a man named Stesilaus fighting in heavy armour. The two fathers ask the two generals what they think of this exhibition, and whether they would advise that their sons should acquire the accomplishment. Nicias and Laches are quite willing to give their opinion; but they suggest that Socrates should also be invited to take part in the consultation.

A Stoic Guide to the Art of Living a Richer, More Meaningful Life Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, Epictetus, Epicurus, Pythagorus, Aesop—such wisdom, now at your fingertips. Timeless wisdom from these ancient Greek philosophers plus others has been condensed by the authors into ten memorable and easy-to-understand rules that, if lived by, can enable modern readers to have rich, meaningful lives. The ten rules . . . represent enduring features of the Greek wisdom. In a very real sense, they defy time and place and represent insights that remain profoundly relevant for contemporary culture. They can serve as anti-dotes for an age in which much that is true and valuable has been obscured by falsity and misconception. Accordingly, these ancient aphorisms are offered to all those interested in rubbing the dust from their eyes. With each chapter examining a rule, all chapters begin with a quote from one of the great Greek philosophers who inspired the rule, followed by a story or explanation of the rule and its importance in life, and end with teaching points on which to meditate and reflect. From this simple starting point, each rule allows the reader to unfurl and explore the richness and depth that can be found in life by embracing the lesson offered. Any reader searching for meaning will return to this simple, slim volume again and again to find tried-and-true wisdom that spans the ages to speak to us today.

The Wisdom Of Aristotle written by Carlo Natali and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-04-19 with Philosophy categories.

This is a profound study of Aristotle's concept of phronesis, or practical wisdom. Carlo Natali critically reconsiders Aristotle's famous doctrine of contemplations, relating it to contemporary theories of the good life. In Book X of the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle appears to claim that the best possible life is that which is engaged in theoria, usually translated "contemplation." Quite a few commentators have criticized what they call Aristotle's "intellectualism," suggesting that when he makes the intellectual life superior to all other human goods he opens the door to a Raskolnikov-like immoralism. Natali threads his way very carefully through the tangle of recent arguments on the topic, and presents a persuasive resolution that preserves the primacy of the life of the mind without giving any room for justifications of amorality. In Natali's discussion, Aristotle's analysis of wisdom comes into focus for us today as an attractive and well-argued ideal, to be kept in mind when we are deciding how to live.
