This is a collection of 100 poems covering the first 100 days of Zen meditation practice in the confines of a countryside Buddhist temple. These are not poems of enlightenment and peace or worldly observations. These are poems of struggle and discomfort. These are not poems of book learning and priestly discussions, but of simple observations sitting in meditation, eating in silence and cleaning the hallways. These are poems of celebration of a new world that any Buddhist practitioner will enjoy reading. Also, throughout the book are photos of Buddhist and Shinto temples in Japan. Neither the poems or photos are previously published.

Adi Da Samraj is a Eastern based guru and teacher unparalleled ...a prolific intellect, writer and artist ...the promised God-Man ...and the divine Ruchira (Bright) Avatar. He's been known over the decades by many names and like many teachers has had his share of controversy, but what he taught and the connection he's made with countless followers goes beyond normal understanding and or the common social landscape. His profundity might be his greatest gift and makes the controversy trivial for many who have come into his presence. These poems by a devotee were written between 2009 and 2013 and look at the relationship of the student to the teacher, the guru, the Bright, God. Yet, they also go beyond Adi Da Samraj to look at spirituality on the whole, the dilemma of an earthly existence, the search for God.

A rock musician's life is glamorous, but it is also a winding road of learning and discovery with no clear road signs to guide by. This book broadly paints this unique journey via the words of those who have done it and have much to share following both successes and failures ... or at least stuff to vent about. This book - written by a musician and label owner known for his music crossword book series - goes deep inside the music business and into the musician's life, looking for the real struggle, real life and real feelings. It tries to paint the otherwise invisible street signs as it charts the life of a musician from learning an instrument to being in a band to breaking up, quoting both mainstream and indie musicians. While the book may be focused on the heavy metal/hard rock experience, the story it tells is actually one any struggling or successful working musician will relate to. This is unlike any other music quote book around and is more than a collection of thoughts but an education.

The Treasury of the True Dharma Eye (Shōbōgenzō) is the masterwork of Dōgen (1200–1253), founder of the Sōtō Zen Buddhist sect in Kamakura-era Japan. It is one of the most important Zen Buddhist collections, composed during a period of remarkable religious diversity and experimentation. The text is complex and compelling, famed for its eloquent yet perplexing manner of expressing the core precepts of Zen teachings and practice. This book is a comprehensive introduction to this essential Zen text, offering a textual, historical, literary, and philosophical examination of Dōgen’s treatise. Steven Heine explores the religious and cultural context in which the Treasury was composed and provides a detailed study of the various versions of the medieval text that have been compiled over the centuries. He includes nuanced readings of Dōgen’s use of inventive rhetorical flourishes and the range of East Asian Buddhist textual and cultural influences that shaped the work. Heine explicates the philosophical implications of Dōgen’s views on contemplative experience and attaining and sustaining enlightenment, showing the depth of his distinctive understanding of spiritual awakening. Readings of Dōgen’s Treasury of the True Dharma Eye will give students and other readers a full understanding of this fundamental work of world religious literature.

The delightful and often funny poetry of Zen’s quintessential free spirit, Master Ryokan—in a fresh translation by a beloved American Zen figure Ryokan Taigu (1758-1831) was a monk in the Soto lineage of Japanese Zen who spent a good part of his life as a hermit, writing poetry, playing with children, and creating simple and exquisitely beautiful calligraphies—sometimes using twigs as his instrument when he couldn't afford a brush. He was never head of a monastery or temple and as an old man, he fell in love with a young Zen nun who also became his student. His affection for her colors the mature poems of his late period. This loving tribute to the great legendary nonconformist includes more than 140 of his poems, 13 examples of his art, and a selection of laugh-out-loud funny anecdotes about his highly idiosyncratic teaching behavior.

"A wonderful introduction the Japanese tradition of jisei, this volume is crammed with exquisite, spontaneous verse and pithy, often hilarious, descriptions of the eccentric and committed monastics who wrote the poems." --Tricycle: The Buddhist Review Although the consciousness of death is, in most cultures, very much a part of life, this is perhaps nowhere more true than in Japan, where the approach of death has given rise to a centuries-old tradition of writing jisei, or the "death poem." Such a poem is often written in the very last moments of the poet's life. Hundreds of Japanese death poems, many with a commentary describing the circumstances of the poet's death, have been translated into English here, the vast majority of them for the first time. Yoel Hoffmann explores the attitudes and customs surrounding death in historical and present-day Japan and gives examples of how these have been reflected in the nation's literature in general. The development of writing jisei is then examined--from the longing poems of the early nobility and the more "masculine" verses of the samurai to the satirical death poems of later centuries. Zen Buddhist ideas about death are also described as a preface to the collection of Chinese death poems by Zen monks that are also included. Finally, the last section contains three hundred twenty haiku, some of which have never been assembled before, in English translation and romanized in Japanese.
