Excerpt from Within the Gateways of the Far East My next thrilling narrative will probably be dedicated to that rapidly diminishing number of persons who have distinguished themselves by never visiting the Orient. These pages were prepared more particularly for the perusal of personal friends and they may be regarded as an apology for an extended absence from home. They do not form an absolutely complete compendium of routes, distances, areas, populations, rainfalls, products, languages, customs, vital statistics of Lama priests, and similar informing items which fill more important and conventional books of travel. The omission of any such details is due to the cruel limitations of space imposed by the high cost of printing. Compensation is offered in the original and profound observations made by the author, whose ignorance of geography, history, science, and religion enables him to write with such abandon and assurance as characterize all who have spent a few days in the Far East. Excerpt from Signs and Portents, in the Far East Events of to-day in the Far East are posters for to-morrow. No white man can wander, as the writer of these pages did last summer, through China, Manchuria, Korea, and Japan, without having forced upon his sight some of the inscriptions which these posters bear. The impressions here set down are those of an Anglo-Indian journalist who does not apologise for his point of view, since the potentialities of India as the coadjutor of Great Britain in the future of the Far East can hardly be over-estimated. That future is perhaps the most serious problem of the twentieth century. So immediate and dramatic, so big with possibilities and crowded with incident, is the new situation, that the writer publishes his report believing that the evidence of an eye-witness cannot fail to be of value where Anglo-Saxon interests are so closely concerned and so plainly threatened. Excerpt from Sequel to Some Glimpses Into Life in the Far East IN my Preface to Glimpses into Life in the Far East, I Stated that if that work should be deemed worthy of public attention, I would bring out a second volume. Months went past, and I was held in suspense. The booksellers objected to place an anonymous book upon their shelves, and I could not find fault with their hesitation; for I felt that a work without the guarantee of a name could, at the outset of its existence, command but small claims to confidence. At the same time my antici pations of financial success were moderate: I was content to obtain a few hundred readers; and my ambition was that my readers should peruse the work with attention, and carefully consider the various subjects on which it treated. Excerpt from The Girl of the Golden Gate The general steamship agency on The Bund was a hive of bustling travelers, their faces alight with the eagerness with which they desired to be gone their many ways up and down the world. A stranger might have imagined that most of Yokohama's European or "white" population had been possessed of a sudden desire to flee beyond the seas. It was a scene common enough, however, for that season in the gateways of the Far East. Spring, with its heart call to distant homelands, had come again to break the spell of the Orient for many and to stir an unutterable longing in the breasts of others - the men and women who dream always of the day they will "go back," but who never do. Excerpt from The Far East: Its History and Its Question The aim of the present volume is to afi'ord in handy form a complete account of the history of the countries of the Far East, in so far as they have come into contact with Western civilisation. In carrying out this scheme, I have not deemed it necessary to dwell upon ancient history, beyond indicating the events which have served to bring the Occident and Orient together. I commence with an account of the earlier phases of Eastern Asia, sufficient to en able the reader to appreciate the conditions under which the Pacific borderland was first visited by the emissaries of Europe. From this point I have followed the story of the Far East in some detail, in the hope that the record thus presented may answer the requirements of the poli tical student who seeks to obtain a clear understanding of the problems involved. Excerpt from Trading With the Far East The terms "Asia" and "Europe," applied by the Phoenicians and later by the Greeks to the sections occupying respectively the areas at the east and the west, were intended only as general designations for those respective sections; but have been retained as their permanent geographic names, while the general title now given by geographers to the Great Continent comprising both Europe and Asia is "Eurasia." Its area, combining the two sections which we call Europe and Asia, is 21,000,000 square miles, or 40% of the land surface of the world, and its population 1,350,000,000, or 75% of that of the entire globe. The boundary between Asia and Europe as generally accepted by geographers is the Ural Mountains and River, at the north, the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus Mountains, the Black Sea, and the Dardanelles. Interior Sparsely Settled The interior of the Asiatic continent, lying behind the narrow and densely populated coastal region running along the Indian and Pacific oceans, consists of deserts and semi-deserts in the central part, frozen tundras at the extreme north, and at the south great mountain ranges whose enormous areas and extreme altitude have given to a certain section thereof the title of "The Roof of the World." This great interior, which lies at an average level of about 15,000 feet above the sea, receives little moisture from the oceans, and is at the best but sparsely populated, Mongolia averaging little more than one person per square mile, Chinese Turkestan two per square mile, Siberia two per square mile, and Tibet four per square mile.
