Excerpt from Without a Home Just ten years ago I took my first hesitating and dubious steps toward authorship. My reception on the part of the public has been so much kinder than I expected, and the audience that has listened to my stories with each successive autumn has been so steadfast and loyal, that I can scarcely be blamed for entertaining a warm and growing regard for these unseen, unknown friends. Toward indifferent strangers we maintain a natural reticence, but as acquaintance ripens into friendship there is a mutual impulse toward an exchange of confidences. In the many kind letters received I have gratefully recognized this impulse in my readers, and am tempted by their interest to be a little garrulous concerning my literary life, the causes which led to it, and the methods of my work. Those who are indifferent can easily skip these preliminary pages, and those who are learning to care a little for the personality of him who has come to them so often with the kindling of the autumn fires may find some satisfaction in learning why he comes, and the motive, the spirit with which, in a sense, he ventures to be present at their hearths. One of the advantages of authorship is criticism; and I have never had reason to complain of its absence. My only regret is that I have not been able to make better use of it. I admit that both the praise and blame have been rather bewildering, but this confusion is undoubtedly due to a lack of the critical faculty. Excerpt from There's No Front Like Home Drop that Raise! For Many, the hollowest laugh of the civilian side of this war came the day it was announced that we were Frozen. From that moment hence, it became illegal for anyone to lure us from our job by the offer of a better one, nor could our loving employers give us a raise. To pay more money was no longer merely contrary to the boss's every instinct, it was now contrary to federal law. This, if it had any connection with reality, would be wonderful. Here you go along for years, feeling nonessential, irrelevant, and immaterial, feeling that not even the Missing Persons Bureau would care if you disappeared from the Missing Persons Bureau. And then it turns out you are so valuable they do not stop at putting a little electrified barbed wire around you, or stopping payment on your pay check, but pass a special law warning off any bounder who would lure you from your regular place of employment. It puts thousands of us under a special protection formerly accorded only to crown jewels, Presidents, and sixteen-year-old daughters. The cad who tries to pay us more money is lucky if he doesn't end up in jail. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from There's No Base Like Home Dear Joe: Well, Joe, we have got off to a start as you have prob'ly no doubt seen by the papers and win the first game of the season by trimmin' the Robins with the ridiculous ease. Even if the thing did go sixteen innin's and the score was only 1 to 0 and we got that run in the last frame by way of a wild pitch, that's the same as if we win by 749 to 0, be cause we win it and that's all that counts, hey, Joe? Them guys got eleven hits off of me and you can see I must of got terrible support or that never would of happened. If it wasn't for my almost unhuman control in the pinches and makin' the batter act like a armless wonder when they was a runner on the base, we would prob'ly of lost the game, because whenever they was a ball hit to the infield them birds all acted like it was against the law to touch it and it made the game more interestin' to have the bases loaded.
