On Being With Others is an outstanding exploration of this key philosophical question. Simon Glendinning shows how traditional positions in the philosophy of mind can do little to rebuff the accusation that in fact we have little claim to have knowledge of minds other than our own. On Being With Others sets out to refute this charge and disentangle many of the confusions in contemporary philosophy of mind and language that have led to such scepticism. Simon Glendinning explores why early attempts by J.L. Austin and Martin Heidegger to refute scepticism about other minds failed and argues that we must turn to Wittgenstein in order to build a solid theory of other minds. Drawing on the celebrated debate between John Searle and Jacques Derrida, Simon Glendinning establishes fascinating and important links between controversies in the philosophy of mind, language and epistemology.

"By linking Wittgenstein with Derrida, Staten suggests that the intellectual relevance of deconstruction is wider than the English-speaking public has recognized."?Studies in the Humanities "This work is altogether first rate. It is informative, faithful, rigorous and completely original in its problematization. It is an original theoretical advance which I believe will mark an essential step forward in the field."?Jacques Derrida "Staten has plenty of philosophical acuity and critical sensitivity as well as wide philosophical scholarship, and he writes in a clear, muscular style which illuminates the issues sometimes profoundly without in any way concealing their difficulty and complxity. . . . Wittgenstein and Derrida should be essential reading not only for anyone interested in the current critical debate but also for philosophers."?Bernard Harrison, University of Sussex, England This book examines Aristotle, Kant, and especially Husserl to bring to light Derrida's development of the classical philosophical concepts of form (eidos), verbal formula (logos), the object-in-general, and time. The later work of Wittgenstein is then examined in detail and Wittgenstein's "zigzag" writing in the Philosophical Investigations is interpreted as deconstructive syntax, directed, like Derrida's work, against the dominance of the philosophical concern with the form of an entity. Henry Staten is a professor of English and philosophy at the University of Utah.

This work focuses on humanity's first technology--language--by placing the views of two of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century in direct confrontation on the topic of language/sign communication. It addresses the dominant role of language by the unexpected means of exposing the limits of words and signs for conveying meaning. Identifying these limits leads to the surprising realization that such limits are also precisely what make communication possible. Wittgenstein strives to shore up the foundation of meaning through a deeper understanding of the tension between rules and practice in the use of signs--while Derrida strives to expose the tension in the nature of the sign itself. This tension underscores the presence of the sign as intimately bound up with its absence. As a result, these two approaches feature contrasting roles for interpretation between a sign and its meaning. Highlighting the differences between these approaches reveals the play of hazards and benefits for language users when faced with alternative ways of understanding and accessing the power and potential of language.

Derrida And Wittgenstein written by Newton Garver and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-04-24 with Philosophy categories.

Though Derrida and Wittgenstein emerged from vastly different cultural and intellectual traditions-Derrida from the French and Wittgenstein from the British-both distrust the "totalizing" concept of metaphysics. In this way, the two belong to the broad contemporary movement of analytical skepticism. Newton Garver and Seung-Chong Lee discuss this commonality, Derrida and Wittgenstein's similar view that language is the key to understanding philosophy, as well as distinguishing the differences between Derrida's style of obscure terminology, long, involved sentences, and multiple meanings, and Wittgenstein's approach to writing, which makes use of simple, familiar analogies and similes.Looking at Derrida and Wittgenstein's place in the history of philosophy, Garver and Lee assert that while Derrida is playful and witty, this method often obscures his ideas; conversely, Wittgenstein is considered the better philosopher because of his use of naturalism to resolve the problems of Kant's version of critical philosophy. The authors explore structuralism and metaphors as linguistic devices central to the theories and criticism of both Derrida and Wittgenstein.Working to eschew the often uncritical interpretations given to Derrida's and Wittgenstein's works, the authors seek to further a fundamental understanding of what philosophy is and of how it operates. Toward this end, they explore the role of language, grammar, and logic in relation to metaphysics within the context of Derrida and Wittgenstein's incompatible, but oddly complementary, linguistic theories. Author note: Newton Garver is Distinguished Service Professor of Philosophy at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has published numerous articles and books, including This Complicated Form of Life: Essays on Wittgenstein. >P>Seung-Chong Lee is Instructor of Philosophy at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea.

This book considers in turn Derrida's treatment of the theories of signification proposed by Hegel, Husserl, Heidegger, Saussure and Lévi-Strauss, Austin, and Searle. Derrida's anasemiological deconstruction of semiology is examined in the light of Nietzsche's views of truth and in relation to some of the problems regarding meaning that have received the attention of Frege, Wittgenstein, Goodman, and Quine. Among the topics discussed are metaphor, the middle voice, the imagination, necessity, and chance, Freud on the uncanny, and the paradoxes of undecidability that seem to be generated by the classical logic of classification, traditional ways of opposing inside and outside, modern ways of opposing Analytic and so-called Continental philosophy.

What is striking in the current reception of Wittgenstein is just how wide-ranging his influence has become among those who are trying to elaborate an alternative to the rationalistic framework dominant today. Pragmatists and deconstructionists are at the forefront of such a movement, of course, and it comes as no surprise that several of them have turned to Wittgenstein and have opened up new perspectives on his work. This joint interest has created a very welcome bridge between post-analytic and continental philosophy which have all but ignored each other for far too long. A promising dialogue is now developing, one to which the contributions to this volume can testify. They were originally presented at a conference organized in November 1999 at the Centre for the Study of Democracy at the University of Westminster in London, sponsored by the Austrian Cultural Institute.
