Politics in New Zealand is an excellent introduction to the study of New Zealand politics, by a well-known and respected political scientist, that has been reprinted and revised repeatedly since 1994. This updated edition was designed to incorporate the major changes that have occurred to the New Zealand political system between 1997 and 2003, including the continuing adjustment to MMP and the return of Labour to power in 1999. The updating was orchestrated to retain the book's original virtues - there is still one voice throughout, hence the book remains lucid and very accessible to the target audience of undergraduates.

The book has been designed to identify those issues that feminists in this and other contexts are addressing in their research, teaching, writing, and their relationships with other feminists. It tells the fascinating story of the courage and the determination of the early New Zealand feminists led by the remarkable Kate Sheppard, whose ideas and attitudes still resonate today.

This new study reveals how institutional practices and discourses shape the way men and women are conceived of, and how through this process, gender stereotypes and expectations are created. Informed by the latest research and trends, these expert authors examine the way in which domestic and global institutions shape and reflect gender interests and the extent to which feminists can challenge gender norms through political institutions. They examine regional, national and international institutions including the EU, ICC and UN and take a broad view of political institutions to include bureaucracy; federalism; legal structures; parliaments; voting and electoral institutions; and media coverage of women’s involvement in such institutions. Drawing on experiences in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of gender studies, political science and comparative politics.

Society and Politics provides an introduction to the essential political ideologies and concepts that have had an enduring impact on the development of New Zealand society. The main topics covered are: sovereignty, social contract and the Treaty of Waitangi; liberalism; socialism; feminism; nationalism, imperialism and racism; neo-liberalism and conservatism; and the contemporary third-way model. Special consideration is given to: poverty and inequality; the rights of children; and superannuation. The purpose of this book is to bring political theory and social policy concepts to life for the New Zealand reader, to highlight the political importance of our intellectual and historical heritage, and to link these ideas to their European and indigenous roots. New Zealand’s political culture has often prided itself on a pioneering, pragmatic and nonideological approach. This book challenges us to rethink that view, illustrating how and why political theory is relevant to us all. This text will be of interest to undergraduate students of New Zealand history, social policy, politics and sociology. The reader will gain a deeper appreciation of the significance, origins and principles of political ideologies in New Zealand, alongside the key figures who promoted these ideas, and their values and social goals. ‘This book is a refreshing antidote to customary works on social policy … Here we have a theoretically-informed piece of critical analysis that purposely casts its net beyond policy to consider society and politics.’ Steve Matthewman, Department of Sociology, University of Auckland

This Brief discusses the adoption of the mixed member proportional (MMP) electoral system in New Zealand and its subsequent effect on representation for women. Concerns about the homogeneity of the legislature under the Single Member Plurality electoral system and the need for increased representativeness and greater proportionality of party preference lead to the changeover in 1996. The book addresses the question of whether an increase in descriptive representation for women in New Zealand’s House of Representatives has translated to policy outcomes that are beneficial to them. It also examines the extent to which female MPs meet the expectation that they will act for members of their groups; pushing minority and gender-friendly legislation and policies into the political arena. Finally, it raises questions about where women are found in New Zealand’s decision making bodies and what influence they might have on policy outcomes. The first book to examine the effects of the MMP system on female descriptive and substantive representation using a case study analysis, this Brief adds to the literature on electoral systems and women’s political representation. This book will be of use to political science students at both the undergraduate and graduate level, particularly those interested in electoral studies, political institutions, politics and gender, and minority representation.

Women’s minimal leadership role in national and local political spheres remains a serious concern worldwide. The Commonwealth Gender Plan of Action for Gender Equality 2005–2015 calls on governments to introduce measures to promote at least 30 per cent representation of women in parliament, government and business. The Impact of Women’s Political Leadership on Democracy and Development describes the barriers to women’s political participation and explains why the contribution of women is so crucial to democracy. It identifies established strategies – electoral reform (New Zealand), party voluntary quotas (South Africa), and legislative quotas (Bangladesh and India) – that have helped these Commonwealth countries to meet the global target of 30 per cent and thus to effectively advance the participation of women in decision-making at all levels.
