The subject of women's career development is becoming increasingly important as the proportion of women in the US work-force approaches 50%. More women now choose careers rather than temp employment or jobs requiring little training and with little potential for advancement. The notion of career development implies that the series of jobs represent some progress, for example, up the hierarchy, an increasingly large salary, increasing recognition and respect from one's colleagues, or more freedom to pursue one's own interests or select one's own projects. Women behave differently from men in the development of their careers, and are often studied to see how they depart from the male standard. The papers in this volume examine the internal dynamics to women's careers using theories about reference groups, relative deprivation, personality, and role conflict. The book analyses women's career development from different perspectives, examining different groups of women, at different points of time in their career process, in relation to men as well as to other groups of women.

Women's careers have been a topic of research and discussion in many disciplines including sociology, business, industrial, organisational and vocational psychology, and career guidance. Despite the introduction of equal employment legislation in many countries, women’s patterns of career development continue to reflect structural labour market disadvantage. This unique book brings together expert contributions from academic researchers, as well as representing the voices of older women who participated in an international research investigation. Grounded in multidisciplinary empirical studies, the book provides: • a variety of perspectives on women's careers in the 21st century • an international exploration of the voice of the older woman • an understanding of both the challenges and responses to women as they construct their careers. Offering a comprehensive understanding of women’s career development throughout the lifespan, this book will be of key interest to academics and researchers from the fields of education, psychology, management, geography, labour market economics and sociology, as well as career practitioners, managers, trainers, researchers and policy developers.

Interrupting a professional career is, for women who opt out, a conflicted decision of last resort. Most women envision returning to the labor force even as they leave it. But can they? Drawing on unique research that follows up women first interviewed for Opting Out?, this book profiles the efforts of a group of high-achieving women to go back to work. The good news is that these women, who are able to draw on considerable resources, are successful. The bad news is that they face cross pressures of class and gender that create what we call the paradox of privilege, which reinforces gender inequality in the family and workplace and results in re-entry strategies that either marginalize them as contingent workers or, for the sizeable fraction who radically reinvent themselves, segregate them in female-dominated fields. The book offers an in-depth look at the pressures high-potential women face as they struggle with the mixed signals of their class privilege - promise compromised by patriarchy - and offers up-close and personal insights in to how the twin pillars of gender inequality - the leadership and wage gaps - are created and maintained by the very women expected to transcend them. -- Provided by publisher.

Condensing and interpreting an enormous body of social science research, this book helps young women survive and thrive in their careers. In a recent survey, working women in the millennial generation (aged from 22 to 35) reported persistent concerns of gender bias in the form of inequitable pay scales, corporate cultures that favor men, stereotypes, few women among the top echelons of the organization, and barriers to balancing work and family. Clearly, women continue to face significant obstacles to success in the workplace despite the progress that has occurred in recent decades. How Women Can Make It Work: The Science of Success will help Gen-X, Y, and Z women who are recent high school or college grads, in their first or second job, or new moms weighing decisions about working achieve success and satisfaction in their careers. The information in this book is also invaluable for managers and counselors who work with young women and want to understand the issues they may be facing.

Women are encouraged to believe that they can occupy top jobs in society by the example of other women thriving in their careers. Who better to be a role model for career success than your mother? Paradoxically, this book shows that having a mother as a role model, even for graduates of top universities, does not predict daughters progressing in their own careers. It finds that mothers with careers, whilst highly influential in their daughters’ choice of career path, rarely mentor their daughters as they progress. This is partly explained by ‘quiet ambition’ – the tendency of women to be modest about their achievements. Bigger issues are the twin pressures from contemporary motherhood and workplace culture that ironically lead career women’s daughters to believe that being a ‘good mother’ means working part-time. This stalls career progress. Based on a large, cross-generational qualitative sample, this book offers a timely and original perspective on the debate about gender equality in leadership positions.

Excerpt from Careers for Women This compilation is the result of the demand for vocational information to help the youth of the country in its choice of a life career. The value of this form of vocational guidance lies in its power to prepare one for the responsibilities of economic life by making the facts about the various means of livelihood available. Greater knowledge creates greater efficiency and human happiness, as it tends to eliminate the extra and unnecessary time spent in discovering the best place for one's ability. Lack of knowledge of the opportunities for work results in a waste of time and energy which reacts on production and on society itself. Even though the youth may never intend to work, a knowledge of the opportunities for service is of great social value. It is a function of education to contribute to human efficiency in economic production and this is being accomplished largely through broad vocational education. Modern educators realize the need for vocational education, and the result is that vocational guidance and vocational training are being introduced into all branches of school life. Grade schools, high schools, and colleges are appointing vocational advisors as members of their staffs, whose duties involve counseling with individuals to help them discover their potentialities and influence them to continue their schooling when necessary so that they may become better fitted for work. The large numbers withdrawing before they reach the secondary schools do so because of lack of interest rather than economic pressure. This throws the responsibility on those who create school curricula. Our school programme should be fitted to the needs of the community.
