Persuasive evidence demonstrates that gender equality in education is central to economic development. Despite more than two decades of accumulated knowledge and evidence of what works in improving gender equality, progress on the ground remains slow and uneven across countries. What is missing? Given that education is a critical path to accelerate progress toward gender equality and the empowerment of women, what is holding us back? These questions were discussed at the global symposium Education: A Critical Path to Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, which was sponsored by the World Bank in October 2007. Girls' Education in the 21st Century is based on background papers developed for the symposium. The book's chapters reflect the current state of knowledge on education from a gender perspective and highlight the importance of, and challenges to, female education, as well as the interdependence of education and development objectives. The last chapter presents five strategic directions for advancing gender equality in education and their implications for World Bank operations. Girls' Education in the 21st Century will be of particular interest to researchers, educators, school administrators, and policy makers at the global, national, regional, and municipal levels.

In no society do women yet enjoy the same opportunities as men. They work longer hours and they are paid less, both in total and prorata. Their choices as to how they spend their time, in both work and leisure, are more constrained than they are for men. These disparities generate substantial gaps between how much women and men can contribute to society, and how much they respectively share in its benefits. In most countries, a fundamental aspect of these disparities in inequality in access to and performance in education. The education of girls and women has been recognized for several decades as a fundamental human right and a developmental necessity. Never the less, large gender disparities in enrolment and learning achievements persist. Eradicating these disparities is well within the power and spending capacity of the world's governments. This book covers all the issues related to women education, which makes it a comprehensive and an authentic work on the subject. It will be a highly beneficial reference tool for education administrators, government and non-governmental organizations, policy makers, teachers and students of women studies and all who work for women's welfare.

The combined effort of 19 feminist educators and theorists from four continents, this exciting collection of essays is designed to be as wide-ranging intellectually as it is geographically. Probing the abilities (and dis-abilities) of women in education from the mid-19th century to the present, it brings historical analysis, classroom research, and theoretical reflection to bear on gender issues in schooling and higher education. 'What about the boys?' cry alarmists who fear a feminist takeover in schools. 'What about them indeed?', say students of women's education who wonder if it is now time to engage more explicitly and directly with the politics of male advantage in education, as well as in economic, political, social and cultural life.

In the ancient period women were known to engage in many productive activities but over the time reproduction and challenges of pregnancy and childbirth gradually made her dependent on men for protection and food. Women have been relegated to the margins in spite of the fact that they are numerically half of the world's population. This has resulted in women being unable to take a place of human dignity as free and independent entities associated with men on an intellectual and professional equal wavelength. The need for women's empowerment is felt because of the status they have in society since the beginning. There is a need to redefine the status of women especially in the Indian society. The impoverished and illiterate status of most women in society is due to their inability to attain sufficient levels of economic power. To sustain any level of empowerment, women have to be educated to be aware of their rights and privileges in the contemporary society. It is only when they become aware of their status in society that they will be able to take full advantage of the concessions offered to them as a corrective measure. Women empowerment has to begin with women's active participation. Unless women throw off the v shackles that ignore their talent, skill and spirit women through education and economic self-reliance, cannot be empowered. Unless they are empowered to take a decisive part in the social, political and economic life of the country, the very development of the country will be lop-sided. Women’s Empowerment is a process whereby women become able to organise themselves to increase their own self reliance, to assert their independent right to make choices and to control resources which will assist in challenging and eliminating their own subordination. The goal of women’s empowerment is to address the issues relating to women’s subordination, inequality and inequity. Hence it is a process where women are able to change from a state of powerlessness (I cannot) to a state of collective self-confidence (we can). Over the years, the scholars and researchers have been engaged in studying and analysing matters related to the better half of the human beings, i.e. ‘Women’. Hence, more number of research studies been done and books are being published, concerning women issues. The book is an effort, to identify and bestows various facets of women empowerment. It discusses the challenges and impediments faced by women, recommends strategies to vi address those challenges and ways to cultivate the conditions leading to women’s empowerment. It attempts at its best to find the possibilities of overcoming the obstacles, identifying significant areas to be strengthened in the dynamic process of empowering women in India. It is meant to be a modest contribution to assess women’s empowerment against the background of current scenario in the twenty first century. I express my sincere gratitude to my parents Shri. Shankarayya R. Hiremath, Rtd. Principal and Smt. Veena S. Hiremath, Homemaker; my sister Ms. Tejaswini S. An absolute must-have parenting guide to raising girls in the 21st century. 'There can be no keener revelation of a country's soul than the way it treats its children.' Nelson Mandela Childhood, as a stage in human development, has been steadily eroded. Children today are introduced to 21st-century adult values and behaviour at an increasingly early age, long before they are developmentally ready to cope with them. We expend immense time and effort attending to their material needs while simultaneously neglecting their developmental needs. In this important polemic, Sue Palmer believes that if we do not get a grip on this problem soon, the increase in developmental disorders, behavioural difficulties and mental health problems recorded by experts over recent decades will soon spiral out of control. Sue discusses challenges faced in the 21st century including: -the problems facing parents in an age of materialism -the way gender wars have intensified those problems -the debate about the 'female brain' -the reasons why contemporary culture can be so damaging for children, especially girls -the challenges involved in detoxifying family life Every parent, grandparent, teacher and carer of girls needs to read this book.

Women's Journey to Empowerment in the 21st Century offers a global view into the patriarchal attitudes that shape cultural practices that oppress women and continue to take form in the modern era. In closely examining a range of issues--from the college campus rape epidemic in the United States to the climate change effects in Ghana--this book compels readers to utilize a contextual framework in order to take a closer look into contemporary violence and oppression against women in our world. Written through the lens of transnational feminism, it examines the intersections of nationhood, race, gender, sexuality, and economics within the context of a world shaped by globalization and colonialism, causing the redefinition of borders and the realignment of migration patterns. A transnational feminist perspective also supports a definition of global sisterhood based on equity, understanding, and mutual experiences. Students focusing on social justice, social work, women's studies, feminist theory, and/or violence against women will find the book to be an invaluable resource.

Home education is the fastest growing educational movement in the world, yet the research remains limited on why and how it has become so popular. As more and more families seek to homeschool, it is imperative that further studies are undertaken to understand how students’ lives are impacted, as well as the challenges and opportunities that arise from this method of schooling. Global Perspectives on Home Education in the 21st Century is an edited collection that focuses on the major factors behind the global rise of the home education movement and explores many of the current issues faced in relation to homeschooling. The book examines key themes that include parents’ and children’s experiences of home education, how and why families choose to home educate, and what happens to home educated children once they are finished. Including topics such as unschooling, self-directed learning, willed learning, and holistic education, this book is primarily intended for home educators, school administrators, policymakers, researchers, academicians, and students.
