The present book seeks to explore new perspectives on political activism of women in the United Provinces in India. The relationship between levels of education and nationalist activity of women in the United Provinces is studied in detail, along with the reciprocal relationship between periods of heightened nationalist agitation and the rise in and extension of educational attainments. The social depth of the national movement, particularly its penetration into 'ordinary', middle-class, and sometimes even 'untouchable' households is also clearly visible from the many instances cited here. Another dimension of the political activism of the women in the United Provinces that is analyzed is the focus on four specific districts-namely Allahabad, Lucknow, Agra and Almora-which each represent four different regions (eastern, central, western, and northern) of the Provinces. A significant section of the book deals with the legislative and deliberative work performed by the women in the Provincial Legislative Assembly between 1937 and 1939. Contrary to the accepted idea that these women did nothing extraordinary in the Assembly, the study tries to show that their performance was quite out of the ordinary, particularly in terms of defining and defending nationalism against prejudiced attacks of their opponents and helping in formulating policies. Women members are only thirteen in number (out of a total 228), which makes their achievements all the more noteworthy. This book shows the positive nature of the participation of women in the nation-building process in the United Provinces. [Subject: India Studies, Gender Studies, Politics]

This book is a product of a group of very enterprising women who were engineered neither by any traditional feminist radicalism nor the usual equalitarian propaganda. Rather, their patriotic zeal appeared to have been inflamed by their concern for the overall betterment of womanhood. Their patriotic disposition is exemplified in the conference theme and the variegated coverage of issues raised in their respective chapters. The theme of the conference which midwifed this book of readings speaks volume of the chemistry of contemporary feminist thinking the need for more education for the womenfolk in order to empower them. The vexed issue of education for the girl child or woman education is an international concern. The status of the phenomenon of women's education and empowerment in the developing world as exemplified in Nigeria has assumed alarming proportions in view of the degrading circumstances of female human trafficking in which many women find themselves in many developing countries. As the authors have pointed out in their various chapters, the low status accorded the phenomenon of women's education and empowerment is accentuated by the patriarchal cultural milieu in many African countries. It will simply be pretentious to assume that these authors have come to an Eldorado in their quest for gender equalitarianism in our socio-economic milieu. There is however no doubt that some milestone has been covered by this effort and that a considerable amount of food has been provided for our thinking. That, in the first instance, is the justification for this publication. No matter the intrinsic shortcomings which may be identified in this book, it is nevertheless a "bold new venture" and an inestimable contribution to National Development by group of patriotic women and it calls for commendation by all and sundry.

The challenge of nation-building, i.e., dealing with the societal and political aftermaths of conflicts and putting new governments and new social compacts into place, has occupied much international energy during the past several decades. As an art, a process, and a set of competencies, it is still very much in an ongoing learning and experimentation phase. The RAND Corporation has contributed to the emerging knowledge base in this domain through a series of studies that have looked at nation-building enterprises led by the United States and others that were led by the United Nations and have examined the experiences gained during the reconstruction of specific sectors. Our study focuses on gender and nation-building. It considers this issue from two aspects: First, it examines gender-specific impacts of conflict and post-conflict and the ways in which events in these contexts may affect men. Second, it analyzes the role of women in the nation-building process, in terms of both actual and current practices, as far as these could be measured and ascertained, and possible outcomes that might occur if these practices were to be modified.

In the United Arab Emirates, the extensive change to Emirati women's traditional rights and roles has been one of the most visible transformations taking place throughout the country's 40 years of modern history. This book offers an interpretation of why and how these modifications came about. The book discovers that there is no direct or easy link between the State's 'offer of rights' towards women and society's acceptance of them. Given these circumstances, the mechanisms that induce women to actually take advantage of what is offered have not been given sufficient attention. The concept of 'genderframing' aims precisely at defining the 'connecting mechanism' and explaining the successes and failures of these policies, both mobilization-wise and implementation-wise. The term 'genderframing' refers to a dynamic and interactive process between the State and its population, which entails the symbolic rework of meanings associated with women-related policies. It is argued that such re-interpretation has been purposefully conducted by the Emirati State in order to portray the changing roles of women as necessary and desirable, for reasons associated with nation-building purposes, religious conformity, promotion of family values, and efforts at indigenous cultural preservation. The book highlights the profound intertwining of gender, nation-building, and domestic socio-political dynamics in a country that, while seeking to establish its modernizing credentials, is still struggling for self-definition and empowerment.

In the ancient period women were known to engage in many productive activities but over the time reproduction and challenges of pregnancy and childbirth gradually made her dependent on men for protection and food. Women have been relegated to the margins in spite of the fact that they are numerically half of the world's population. This has resulted in women being unable to take a place of human dignity as free and independent entities associated with men on an intellectual and professional equal wavelength. The need for women's empowerment is felt because of the status they have in society since the beginning. There is a need to redefine the status of women especially in the Indian society. The impoverished and illiterate status of most women in society is due to their inability to attain sufficient levels of economic power. To sustain any level of empowerment, women have to be educated to be aware of their rights and privileges in the contemporary society. It is only when they become aware of their status in society that they will be able to take full advantage of the concessions offered to them as a corrective measure. Women empowerment has to begin with women's active participation. Unless women throw off the v shackles that ignore their talent, skill and spirit women through education and economic self-reliance, cannot be empowered. Unless they are empowered to take a decisive part in the social, political and economic life of the country, the very development of the country will be lop-sided. Women’s Empowerment is a process whereby women become able to organise themselves to increase their own self reliance, to assert their independent right to make choices and to control resources which will assist in challenging and eliminating their own subordination. The goal of women’s empowerment is to address the issues relating to women’s subordination, inequality and inequity. Hence it is a process where women are able to change from a state of powerlessness (I cannot) to a state of collective self-confidence (we can). Over the years, the scholars and researchers have been engaged in studying and analysing matters related to the better half of the human beings, i.e. ‘Women’. Hence, more number of research studies been done and books are being published, concerning women issues. The book is an effort, to identify and bestows various facets of women empowerment. It discusses the challenges and impediments faced by women, recommends strategies to vi address those challenges and ways to cultivate the conditions leading to women’s empowerment. It attempts at its best to find the possibilities of overcoming the obstacles, identifying significant areas to be strengthened in the dynamic process of empowering women in India. It is meant to be a modest contribution to assess women’s empowerment against the background of current scenario in the twenty first century. I express my sincere gratitude to my parents Shri. Shankarayya R. Hiremath, Rtd. Principal and Smt. Veena S. Hiremath, Homemaker; my sister Ms. Tejaswini S.
