Throughout history, Japanese women have excelled in poetry - from the folk songs of the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters) compiled in 712 and the court poetry of the 9th to the 14th centuries, on through the age of haikai and kanshi to the 19th century, into the contemporary period when books of women's poems have created a sensation. This anthology presents examples of the work of more than 100 Japanese women poets, arranged chronologically, and of all the major verse forms: choka, tanka, haikai (haiku), kanshi (verse written in Chinese), and free verse. The poems describe not just seasonal changes and the vagaries of love - which form the thematic core of traditional Japanese poetry - but also the devastations of war, childbirth, conflicts between child-rearing and work, experiences as refugees, experiences as non-Japanese residents in Japan, and more.Sections of poetry open with headnotes, and the editor has provided explanations of terms and references for those unfamiliar with the Japanese language. Other useful tools include a glossary of poetic terms, a chronology, and a bibliography that points the reader toward other works by and about these poets. There is no comparable collection available in English.Students and anyone who appreciates poetry and Japanese culture will treasure this magnificent anthology. Editor and translator Hiroaki Sato is a past winner of the PEN America translator prize and the Japan-United States Friendship Commission's 1999 literary translation award.

After centuries of repression of the female voice in literature, the Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho (1912-1926) periods in Japanese history saw important changes in both the way women wrote and the way they were read. However, even the most accepted female writers of these two eras were judged by criteria different from those applied to men, and only the most conservative were praised by the (male) critics. This study of the women who wrote in the modern era examines both famous and now-obscure writers within the context of their moments in time and their influence on later generations of Japanese women writers. Arranged chronologically, the book covers the pioneering women of the early Meiji period, the ethos of reactionary conservatism, the romantic movement in poetry, women writers of the naturalist school, Taisho liberalism, and the new era of literary women. An introduction outlines the various schools of Japanese female writers during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as well as the social and cultural trends that helped produce them. The text is appropriate for both well-read scholars of Japanese literature and newcomers to the works of the "fair ladies of the back chamber," as these creative and driven writers were once called.

Akiko Yosano, Akiko Yanagiwara, Takeko Kujō Three Women Poets of Japan Public Domain Poets #13 Publicdomainpoets.com 'Three Women Poets of Modern Japan' (1927), with additional material, including over 100 tanka by Akiko Yosano (1878-1942), Akiko Yanagiwara (a.k.a. 'White Lotus', 1885-1967), and Takeko Kujō (1887- 1928), selected and translated into English by Glenn Hughes and Yazan T. Iwasaki. New edition designed and edited by Dick Whyte. The heart of a woman of thirty Is a measure of fire, Having neither shade, nor smoke, Nor sound. It is a round sacred sun In the sky at evening; Silently, Penetratingly, It burns-burns. -'Dance Garments', Akiko Yosano Yosano, Yanagiwara, & Kujō were all leading poets in the 'new tanka' movement in Japan in the early-1900s, following Masaoka Shiki's reforms. When translating their work, Hughes and Iwasaki drew on contemporary 'free verse' poets for inspiration, which had themselves drawn on late-1800s and early-1900s translations of tanka and haikai as models; "Free verse poems, as brief as possible, not too musical nor yet too prosaic, seem best to convey to Western ears the sense and effect of the original." With the redness of the setting sun I flame, Thinking of you. Heaven and earth, Cloud and water, Life and death: There is neither end nor beginning- That is all I feel sure of. -2 tanka, Akiko Yanagiwara It is possible Hughes and Iwasaki were also influenced by Takuboku Ishikawa, a well-known Japanese tanka poet who adopted a 3-line approach to waka in the early-1900s, and Yone Noguchi and Jun Fujita, who pioneered 4-line English-language tanka, in the mid-1910s and early-1920s. I am wrapped in silk The color of flame, But my body-my bosom- Is cold. Spring night. Silence. The rustle of my dress Falling to the floor. Silence. -2 tanka, Takeko Kujō Public Domain Press is dedicated to producing new editions of out-of-print poetry, particularly with regard to compressed & fragmented 'free verse' from the late-1800s & early-1900s. All poems start as facsimiles - to preserve original fonts - which are cleaned up, edited, and spaciously laid-out, adorned with illustrations, and ornaments from the books and magazines they originally appeared in. These are not simply "reprints" of previously existing books, but newly crafted collections, lovingly edited from public domain material, for the serious poetry lover.

It was not until Kawabata Yasunari won the 1968 Nobel Prize for literature that the average Western reader became aware of contemporary Japanese literature. A few translations of writings by Japanese women have appeared lately, yet the West remains largely ignorant of this wide field. In this book Sachiko Schierbeck profiles the 104 female winners of prestigious literary prizes in Japan since the beginning of the century. It contains summaries of their selected works, and a bibliography of works translated into Western languages from 1900 to 1993. These works give insight into the minds and hearts of Japanese women and draw a truer picture of the conditions of Japanese community life than any sociological study would present. Schierbeck's 104 biographies constitute a useful reference work not only to students of literature but to anyone with an interest in women's studies, history or sociology.
