How has globalization worked for women working on the frontlines of neoliberalism on the Mexico-US border? This border divides "US" from "Others," and produces social inequalities that form a site where marginalized border women encounter the othering power of neoliberalism and confront inequalities of gender and class. Within this context, a critical comparison of socially similar women, working either in export production industries or in small-scale commerce and low-level services in Ciudad Juárez, reveals how export factory work constrains women’s empowerment at home – as well as the wages they earn and the well-being of their households. This volume challenges the neoliberal rationale of "empowering" women to support market growth, and argues instead for understanding women’s empowerment as a process of transformation from disempowerment by gender power relations to challenging masculinist domination in households and, ultimately, the economy and society. Because structures of gender and globalization are mutually constituted, women’s empowerment as gender democracy is integral to producing alternative, democratic globalization. Using a feminist methodology that gives attention to the standpoint of women located on the downside of social hierarchies and takes into account strategically diverse points of view, this study develops analysis to counter neoliberal globalization as it touches down in the lives of ordinary women and men on the border and beyond.

The Palgrave Handbook Of Globalization And Sport written by Joseph Maguire and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-20 with Sports & Recreation categories.

This handbook illustrates the utility of global sport as a lens through which to disentangle the interconnected political, economic, cultural, and social patterns that shape our lives. Drawing on multidisciplinary perspectives, it is organized into three parts. The first part outlines theoretical and conceptual insights from global sport scholarship: from the conceptualization and development of globalization theories, transnationalism and transnational capital, through to mediasport, roving coloniality, and neoliberal doctrine. The second part illustrates the varied flows within global sport and the ways in which these flows are contested, across physical cultures/sport forms, identities, ideologies, media, and economic capital. Diverse topics and cases are covered, such as sport business and the global sport industry, financial fair play, and global mediasport. Finally, the third part explores various aspects of global sport development and governance, incorporating insights from work in the Global South. Across all of these contributions, varied approaches are taken to examine the ‘power of sport’ trope, generating a thought-provoking dialogue for the reader. Featuring an accomplished roster of contributors and wide-ranging coverage of key issues and debates, this handbook will serve as an indispensable resource for scholars and students of contemporary sports studies.

North South Co Operation written by Caroline Sweetman and has been published by Oxfam this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Political Science categories.

This book in the Focus on Gender series looks at co-operation for development: between North, South, and East; women's organisations and funding agencies; development practitioners, academics, and civil society; politicians and economists; and women and men. Currently, the world is in economic and political crisis, of which escalating conflict is a symptom. In this book, writers from South and North stress that such crisis can only be resolved if we recognise that we are all involved in a global system which perpetuates poverty and inequality, not only in the South and East, but also in the North. Organisations which seek to relieve poverty must find ways to listen to, value, and learn from Southern experience of development. Linking initiatives are one way of enabling people of different cultures and backgrounds to share experience, build mutual respect, and reach common ground, while acknowledging the value of difference. It is essential for Northern funding agencies to foster multiculturalism and gender equity within their own structures, as well as in their work with Southern counterparts. Topics covered include: making the global links between women and poverty; listening to the South; linking for solidarity; women's participation and international fora; the true meaning of partnership; and the 'feminisation' of organisational culture. Several articles reflect on the rich experience and lessons of Oxfam's Women's Linking Project.

As the first and only book in any language on contemporary women’s movements in Hungary, this groundbreaking study focuses on the role of women’s activism in a society where women are not yet adequately represented by established parties and political institutions. Drawing on eyewitness accounts of meetings and protests, as well as first-person interviews with leading female activists, Katalin Fábián examines the interactions between women’s groups in Hungary and studies the unique brand of democracy they have forged in postcommunist Eastern Europe. Through her analysis, she demonstrates how democratization and globalization—with their attendant range of challenges and opportunities—have led women to redefine public-private divides.
