Empowerment of Women for Promoting Health and Quality of Life reviews the evolution of modern Public Health and Global Public Health and the role of women's empowerment for promoting global health. It critically reviews the evolution of global health since the 1990s when the UN initiated the Human Development Approach and adopted the millennial development goals through global consensuses. It analyses the paradigm shifts from disease-based prevention using the Public Health model to a new paradigm focusing on the root causes of health problems globally (e.g. inequalities, powerlessness). It reviews the philosophical, theoretical and empirical foundations of these paradigms. The second section presents our meta-analysis of 86 successful women's empowerment case-studies around the world that address threats to health and well-being of their families and communities. These movements represent four domains: human-rights, equal-rights, health, and income. Using an EMPOWER (acronym) framework designed for the meta-analysis, it answers six questions: can ordinary women organize empowerment movements that enhance the well-being of their families and communities; if so, what are their characteristics; what problems motivate them; which empowerment methods are used and do they vary by domains; who support and oppose them and how; and what are the social contexts that affect their movements. Success consists of: accomplishing the original goal/s, external recognition and/or replication by others, and subjective and objective empowerment outcomes. A summary of each case allows readers to learn directly from that movement. The final chapter critically reviews the key findings, issues and their implications for policy, actions, and research in human service professions.

In September 2014, the Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education and the Forum on Public-Private Partnerships for Global Health and Safety of the Institute of Medicine convened a workshop on empowering women and strengthening health systems and services through investing in nursing and midwifery enterprise. Experts in women's empowerment, development, health systems' capacity building, social enterprise and finance, and nursing and midwifery explored the intersections between and among these domains. Innovative and promising models for more sustainable health care delivery that embed women's empowerment in their missions were examined. The past decade has witnessed a significant increase in the construction of health as a security issue by national governments and multilateral organizations. This book provides the first critical, feminist analysis of the flesh-and-blood impacts of the securitization of health on different bodies, while broadening the scope of what we understand as global health security. It looks at how feminist perspectives on health and security can lead to different questions about health and in/security, problematizing some of the ‘common sense’ assumptions that underlie much of the discourse in this area. Health inequalities, primarily driven by the structural determinants of health, are a major concern towards the global goal of health for all. A feminist global health policy has the potential to address the unequal distribution of power and to dismantle these imbalances. The prioritisation of intersectional, holistic, human rights-based approaches intends to advance health equality and reproductive justice. This research examined the contours and potentials of a feminist global health policy by developing a framework. Online focus groups were conducted with participants affiliated to either the global-academic or local-activist level, envisaging global representation. The elaborated framework provides a nexus between the global and the local level, by entailing universal principles as well as recommendations and sensitivity for context-specific adaptations. Community and policymakers are identified as key actors. This research aims to stimulate a debate on feminist global health policy and the potential of this framework with regard to health equality and reproductive justice.
