This collection offers an overview of the ways in which space has become relevant to the study of Shakespearean drama and theatre. It distinguishes various facets of space, such as structural aspects of dramatic composition, performance space and the evocation of place, linguistic, social and gendered spaces, early modern geographies, and the impact of theatrical mobility on cultural exchange and the material world. A scrupulous study of Shakespeare’s The Tempest and its most comprehensive rewriting Indigo, or Mapping the Waters by Marina Warner. Taking as its focus representations of femininity and the other, the study scrutinises the various implications of three concepts: ambivalence, liminality and plurality in terms of their relevance to the conjunctures of postfeminism and post-colonialism, proposing that postfeminist discourse is in search of a new ethics and perspective that mainly champion these three terms through the employment of intertextuality as a strategy. The study is careful to carry out a comparative analysis of the works in terms of both poetics and politics. Informed by interdisciplinarity, the study explores how The Tempest destabilises itself, inviting a deconstructionist reading in terms of its relation to patriarchal and colonial dynamics ingrained in the play and how Indigo takes its substantial space among other rewritings of The Tempest by presenting new and imaginative ways of seeing the female and feminised figures in the play.

Shakespeare's visionary women, usually confined to the periphery, claim centre stage to voice their sleeping and waking dreams. These women recount their visions through acts of rhetoric, designed to persuade and, crucially, to directly intervene in political action. The visions discussed in this Element are therefore not simply moments of inspiration but of political intercession. The vision performed or recounted on stage offers a proleptic moment of female speech that forces audiences to confront questions of narrative truth and women's testimony. This Element interrogates the scepticism that Shakespeare's visionary women face and considers the ways in which they perform the truth of their experiences to a hostile onstage audience. It concludes that prophecy gives women a brief moment of access to political conversations in which they are not welcome as they wrest narrative control from male speakers and speak their truth aloud.
