At the turn of the twentieth century, Vienna emerged as a great cultural centre that stood at the forefront of developments in music, psychology, and the natural sciences. Equally influential, and still tremendously popular today, are the designs of the Wiener Werkstatte, or Vienna Workshop, a group that was at the heart of the city's cultural scene and whose collaborators included such luminaries as the architect Josef Hoffman, the designer Koloman Moser, and the painters Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, and Egon Schiele. This guide to the arts and crafts of fin-de-siecle Vienna is an excellent introduction to their work in all media - from architecture, furniture, ceramics, and glass, to silver, fashion, and textiles, bookbinding, toys, painting, and the graphic arts - as well as a survey of the cultural development of this pivotal period.

This exceptional volume brings together nearly 1,000 images representing the diversity and richness of the visual arts in Vienna at the turn of the 20th century. At the turn of the 20th century, Vienna became an epicenter for new thought, increasingly running counter to the prevalent conservatism symbolized by the neo-classical facades of the buildings in the city’s Ringstrasse. During the time of the modernist movement led by Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, and Koloman Moser, among others, a multidisciplinary environment emerged in which music, writing, and intellectual thought flourished, bringing different arts together in a “Gesamtkunstwerk” a total work of art. Covering all artistic fields, from painting to photography, the Wiener Werkstatte and decorative arts, fashion and architecture of fin-de-siecle Vienna and including biographies for featured artists, Vienna 1900 Complete is an unprecedented compilation of richly colored images curated and authored in a single volume by three leading scholars of the period.

Together with the objects kept in the museum, they convey an authentic picture of the department's extraordinary production. Around forty designers are known by name. The earliest pieces of embroidery, from 1906, derive from furniture upholstery belonging to the Wittgenstein family, while lace production did not begin until 1915 and consisted of braids and covers, also inserts for curtains and counterpanes. The book provides a great deal of new information on this hitherto little-known Wiener Werkstätte department, including artists' sketches and designs, blueprints, bobbin lace patterns, sample portfolios in WW design, and historical black-and-white photographs of the original objects. Text in English and German.

In Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century the question of what it meant to be modern was a heated topic of debate. Focusing on interior design, fashion and photography, as well as on painting and architecture, this study casts fresh light on the vital role of the arts in these debates. The 'new' art and literature was crucial in defining a distinctive Viennese modernity while at the same time challenging preconceptions about modern urban life. Many artists and writers produced work that questioned and undermined oppositions between city and country, interior spaces and panoramic views, masculinity and femininity. Issues of gender and the representation of the body were particularly important in establishing professional identities for some of Vienna's most prominent figures, including the Secessionist painters Gustav Klimt and Carl Moll, designers such as Adolf Loos and Emilie Flöge, as well as the poet and feuilletonist Peter Altenberg. Intellectual life in turn-of-the-century Vienna has often been characterised as a retreat from the public sphere. This book demonstrates how - even in its ostensibly most private manifestations - Viennese Modernism involved a highly performative set of practices aimed at an international audience.
