The manual consists of five main chapters: Getting started, Making mistakes, Going public, Getting specialized and Making competitions. The content of the fourth chapter (Getting specialized) will be entirely new material, while the last chapter (Making competitions) will refer to the homonymous exhibition and symposium that took place in Vienna in June 2009. An indispensable book for all who want their young practices to survive.

The escalating interdependecy of nations drives global geopolitics to shift ever more quickly. Societies seem unable to control any change that affects their cities, whether positively or negatively. Challenges are global, but solutions need to be implemented locally. How can architectural research contribute to the future of our changing society? How has it contributed in the past? The theme of the 10th EAAE/ARCC International Conference, “Architectural Research Addressing Societal Challenges”, was set to address these questions. New modes of practice are now emerging in architecture. Rural Studio, Exyzt, Muf, Assemble and many more have led the way by challenging conventional ideas of ‘The Architect' and reclaiming the notion of architecture as something public that should work ultimately towards the collective good. This quiet revolution is born out of a crisis in the profession and a wider vacuum in the political, environmental and economic situation.
