In this book, Johnny Ball tells one of the most important stories in world history – the story of mathematics. By introducing us to the major characters and leading us through many historical twists and turns, Johnny slowly unravels the tale of how humanity built up a knowledge and understanding of shapes, numbers and patterns from ancient times, a story that leads directly to the technological wonderland we live in today. As Galileo said, 'Everything in the universe is written in the language of mathematics', and Wonders Beyond Numbers is your guide to this language. Mathematics is only one part of this rich and varied tale; we meet many fascinating personalities along the way, such as a mathematician who everyone has heard of but who may not have existed; a Greek philosopher who made so many mistakes that many wanted his books destroyed; a mathematical artist who built the largest masonry dome on earth, which builders had previously declared impossible; a world-renowned painter who discovered mathematics and decided he could no longer stand the sight of a brush; and a philosopher who lost his head, but only after he had died. Enriched with tales of colourful personalities and remarkable discoveries, this book also has plenty of mathematics for keen readers to get stuck into. Written in Johnny Ball's characteristically light-hearted and engaging style, it is packed with historical insight and mathematical marvels; join Johnny and uncover the wonders found beyond the numbers.

Who were the five strangest mathematicians in history? What are the ten most interesting numbers? Jam-packed with thought-provoking mathematical mysteries, puzzles, and games, Wonders of Numbers will enchant even the most left-brained of readers. Hosted by the quirky Dr. Googol--who resides on a remote island and occasionally collaborates with Clifford Pickover--Wonders of Numbers focuses on creativity and the delight of discovery. Here is a potpourri of common and unusual number theory problems of varying difficulty--each presented in brief chapters that convey to readers the essence of the problem rather than its extraneous history. Peppered throughout with illustrations that clarify the problems, Wonders of Numbers also includes fascinating "math gossip." How would we use numbers to communicate with aliens? Check out Chapter 30. Did you know that there is a Numerical Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder? You'll find it in Chapter 45. It provides a dazzling mass of information for those intrigued by the many roles numbers play in folklore and popular culture, in music and poetry, and in the many religions, cultures, and belief systems of our world. The stories unfold from millions to zero: from the number of the beast (666) to the seven deadly sins; from the twelve signs of the zodiac to the four suits of a deck of cards. Along the way, author Barnaby Rogerson will show you why Genghis Khan built a city of 108 towers, how Dante forged his Divine Comedy on the number eleven, and why thirteen is so unlucky in the West whereas fourteen is the number to avoid in China.

Design By Numbers written by John Maeda and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-08-24 with Design categories.

A pioneering graphic designer shows how to use the computer as an artistic medium in its own right. Most art and technology projects pair artists with engineers or scientists: the artist has the conception, and the technical person provides the know-how. John Maeda is an artist and a computer scientist, and he views the computer not as a substitute for brush and paint but as an artistic medium in its own right. Design By Numbers is a reader-friendly tutorial on both the philosophy and nuts-and-bolts techniques of programming for artists. Practicing what he preaches, Maeda composed Design By Numbers using a computational process he developed specifically for the book. He introduces a programming language and development environment, available on the Web, which can be freely downloaded or run directly within any JAVA-enabled Web browser. Appropriately, the new language is called DBN (for "design by numbers"). Designed for "visual" people—artists, designers, anyone who likes to pick up a pencil and doodle—DBN has very few commands and consists of elements resembling those of many other languages, such as LISP, LOGO, C/JAVA, and BASIC. Throughout the book, Maeda emphasizes the importance—and delights—of understanding the motivation behind computer programming, as well as the many wonders that emerge from well-written programs. Sympathetic to the "mathematically challenged," he places minimal emphasis on mathematics in the first half of the book. Because computation is inherently mathematical, the book's second half uses intermediate mathematical concepts that generally do not go beyond high-school algebra. The reader who masters the skills so clearly set out by Maeda will be ready to exploit the true character of digital media design.

Are you "proud" to admit that you never liked math? Were never good in math? Are you struggling to pique your students' interest in math? Are you bored by the routine, mechanical aspects of teaching to the test in mathematics? This book offers a plethora of ideas to enrich your instruction and helps you to explore the intrinsic beauty of math. Through dozens of examples from arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and probability, Alfred S. Posamentier reveals the amazing symmetries, patterns, processes, paradoxes, and surprises that await students and teachers who look beyond the rote to discover wonders that have fascinated generations of great thinkers. Using the guided examples, help students explore the many marvels of math, including * The Amazing Number 1,089. Follow the instructions to reverse three-digit numbers, subtract them, and continue until everyone winds up with . . . 1,089! * The Pigeonhole Principle. All students know that guesstimating works sometimes, but now they can use this strategy to solve problems. * The Beautiful Magic Square. Challenge students to create their own magic squares and then discover the properties of Dürer's Magic Square. The author presents examples to entice students (and teachers) to study mathematics--to make mathematics a popular subject, not one to dread or avoid. Vector analysis is a very useful and a powerful tool for physicists and engineers alike. It has applications in multiple fields. Although it is not a particularly difficult subject to learn, students often lack a proper understanding of the concepts on a deeper level. This restricts its usage to a mere mathematical tool. That's where this book hope to be different. We don't want this subject to be treated just as a mathematical tool. We hope to go beyond it. Therefore, the emphasis is to provide physical interpretation to the various concepts in the subject with the help of illustrative figures and intuitive reasoning. Having said that, we have given adequate importance to the mathematical aspect of the subject as well. 100+ solved examples given in the book will give the reader a definite edge when it comes to problem solving. For beginners this book will provide a concise introduction to the world of vectors in a unique way. The various concepts of the subject are arranged logically and explained in a simple reader-friendly language, so that they can learn with minimum effort in quick time. For experts, this book will a great refresher. The first 2 chapters focus on the basics of vectors. In chapters 3 to 5 we dig into vector calculus. Chapter 6 is all about vectors in different coordinate systems and finally chapter 7 focuses on the applications of vectors in various fields like engineering mechanics, electromagnetism, fluid mechanics etc.
