Menagerie written by Caroline Grigson and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with History categories.

Menagerie is the story of the panoply of exotic animals that were brought into Britain from time immemorial until the foundation of the London Zoo--a tale replete with the extravagant, the eccentric, and--on occasion--the downright bizarre. From Henry III's elephant at the Tower, to George IV's love affair with Britain's first giraffe and Lady Castlereagh's recalcitrant ostriches, Caroline Grigson's tour through the centuries amounts to the first detailed history of exotic animals in Britain. On the way we encounter a host of fascinating and outlandish creatures, including the first peacocks and popinjays, Thomas More's monkey, James I's cassowaries in St James's Park, and Lord Clive's zebra--which refused to mate with a donkey, until the donkey was painted with stripes. But this is not just the story of the animals themselves. It also the story of all those who came into contact with them: the people who owned them, the merchants who bought and sold them, the seamen who carried them to our shores, the naturalists who wrote about them, the artists who painted them, the itinerant showmen who worked with them, the collectors who collected them. And last but not least, it is about all those who simply came to see and wonder at them, from kings, queens, and nobles to ordinary men, women, and children, often impelled by no more than simple curiosity and a craving for novelty.

Wild Animal Skins In Victorian Britain written by Ann C. Colley and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-11 with Literary Criticism categories.

What did the 13th Earl of Derby, his twenty-two-year-old niece, Manchester’s Belle Vue Zoo, and even some ordinary laborers all have in common? All were avid collectors and exhibitors of exotic, and frequently unruly, specimens. In her study of Britain’s craze for natural history collecting, Ann C. Colley makes extensive use of archival materials to examine the challenges, preoccupations, and disordered circumstances that attended the amassing of specimens from faraway places only vaguely known to the British public. As scientific institutions sent collectors to bring back exotic animals and birds for study and classification by anatomists and zoologist, it soon became apparent that collecting skins rather than live animals or birds was a relatively more manageable endeavor. Colley looks at the collecting, exhibiting, and portraying of animal skins to show their importance as trophies of empire and representations of identity. While a zoo might display skins to promote and glorify Britain’s colonial achievements, Colley suggests that the reality of collecting was characterized more by chaos than imperial order. For example, Edward Lear’s commissioned illustrations of the Earl of Derby’s extensive collection challenge the colonial’s or collector’s commanding gaze, while the Victorian public demonstrated a yearning to connect with their own wildness by touching the skins of animals. Colley concludes with a discussion of the metaphorical uses of wild skins by Gerard Manley Hopkins and other writers, exploring the idea of skin as a locus of memory and touch where one’s past can be traced in the same way that nineteenth-century mapmakers charted a landscape. Throughout the book Colley calls upon recent theories about the nature and function of skin and touch to structure her discussion of the Victorian fascination with wild animal skins.

Nowhere Left To Go How Climate Change Is Driving Species To The Ends Of The Earth written by Benjamin von Brackel and has been published by The Experiment, LLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-05 with Science categories.

Harrowing journeys of animals and plants—fleeing skyrocketing temperatures and mega-droughts—reported from the frontlines of the greatest migration of species since the Ice Age As humans accelerate global warming while laying waste to the environment, animals and plants must flee to the margins: on scattered nature reserves, between major highways, or among urban sprawl. And when even these places become too hot and inhospitable, wildlife is left with only one path to survival: an often-formidable journey toward the poles as they race to find a new home in a warming world. Tropical zones lose their inhabitants, beavers settle in Alaska, and gigantic shoals of fish disappear—just to reappear along foreign coastlines. Award-winning environmental journalist Benjamin von Brackel traces these awe-inspiring journeys and celebrates the remarkable resilience of species around the world. But the lengths these plants and animals must go to avoid extinction are as alarming as they are inspirational: Sea animals—like fish—move on average 45 miles a decade to cooler regions, while land animals—like beavers and butterflies—move 11 miles. As even the poles of the Earth heat up, we’re left with a stark and irreversible choice: Halt the climate emergency now, or face a massive die-off of species, who are increasingly left with nowhere else to go.

Dracula Scholar S Annotated Edition written by Christopher David and has been published by Christopher David this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-28 with categories.

A labor of love, this fully annotated edition of Bram Stoker's Dracula is meant for the university level literature student. Can be used as a resource when reading Dracula or on its own. Inspired by the La Trobe University subject Gothic Literature and its Children, and initially made up of notes taken for that subject, and driven by the editor's difficulty in locating a digital annotated copy at a reasonable price. Hundreds of hours of work has gone into this edition and it is being offered at a low price to ensure that as many students as possible are able to benefit from it. Some of the most recent literary scholarly approaches to the text have been incorporated into the annotations, alongside definitive articles and interpretations. Students are offered a never before seen enriched text that both enhances the depth of reading and prepares for further scholarly investigation. Sheds light on often dismissed and neglected parts of the text and considers different scholarly approaches to interpretation, including post-colonial and gender studies. This edition also includes definitions for obscure terms, explanations of key parts of the text and important historical notes. Relying on dozens of sources, including many known to have been employed by Bram Stoker. Includes images from the British Library and other collections, to help illustrate key aspects of the text. Lavishly illustrated throughout, including over 20 original and exclusive artworks. This edition is a scholarly reference, a beautifully formatted novel and a creative piece of art. The original text of the American edition of Dracula has been carefully edited to provide the closest possible presentation of Bram Stoker's original vision. Important differences between the American and British editions are noted in the annotations and the text has been completely edited to fix spelling errors and typos, where doing so enhances, rather than diminishes, the integrity of the text. Possibly the most accurate, and faithful to the author's original intentions, edition of the Dracula text ever published. Meant for the university level student, but equally engaging for the casual reader or anybody with an interest in Dracula. Deliberately priced to allow for maximum possible accessibility. A truly enhanced edition of Dracula, and a labor of love.
