This report presents eight case studies of successful urban wood waste recycling projects and businesses. These studies document the success of recovered products such as lumber and lumber products, mulch, boiler fuel, and alternative cover for landfills. Overall, wood waste accounts for about 17% of the total waste received at municipal solid waste landfills in the United States. In 1998, the amount of urban wood waste generated was more than 160 million tons, with 29.6 million tons available for recovery. Similarly, in 1998, new construction in the United States generated 8.7 million tons of wood waste, with 6.6 million tons available for recovery; demolition waste generated 26.4 million tons of wood waste, with 9 million tons available for recovery. The case studies were selected on the basis of the following criteria: an emphasis on partnerships among communities, businesses, governments, and non-governmental organizations; efficient use of funds; sustained creation of enterprise; and a high benefit/cost ratio.

The economic disposal of wood residue, or non-lumber products (e.g. sawdust, short pieces of lumber, edging strips, etc.), is one of the most difficult problems within the wood products industry. Businesses are faced with few choices for disposal, let alone cost effective ones. Disposal by open burning, cheap landfilling, pushing over the side of the hill has been the existing practices in world, particularly in developing nations. Further, disposal of wood ash is more costly than in the past. Therefore, finding markets for these non-lumber products can be profitable. This book provided information on enormous quantity of wood waste utilization, towards reduction of environmental impacts from wood waste dumping. The conversion of sawdust to briquette charcoal as one of the alternative utilization of sawdust dumping and other specialty wood products from wood processing by-products were fully discussed. Wood waste will be a potential environmental pollutant if not fully utilized. Like many other developing countries, Indonesia recognizes a big potential for the utilization of wood waste which is generated as a result of developing technological equipment and skills in forestry exploitation. In South Kalimantan, loss of useful wood as wood waste has reached 51% (comprising 42.3% from logging areas, 6.8% from log yards and 1.9% from logponds), and waste from the sawmill industry in Java has reached about 50%. In 1985, wood products outside of Java totalled 17,880,000 m3. If the wood waste from the forests (40%) and industry (42%) are added together, the volume of wood waste is estimated to be more 12 million m3. Until 1989, there is almost no interest in the utilization of wood waste because of governmental regulations on the use of wood waste, and also its uneconomical viability. [Author's abstract].
