Excerpt from Work and Adventure in New Guinea This book was originally issued in 188 5, and attracted the attention of many readers to the noble Christian work being done in New Guinea. It has been out of print for some years, and is now reissued in connection with the publication of James Chalmers' Life. New Guinea, if we may take Australia as a continent, is the largest island in the world, being, roughly speaking, about 1400 miles long, and 490 broad at its widest point. Its northernmost coast nearly touches the equator, and its southernmost stretches down to 11 south latitude. Little more than the fringe or coast-line of the island has been at all carefully explored, but it is known to possess magnificent mountain ranges, vast stretches of beautiful scenery, much land that is fruitful, even under native cultivation, and mighty rivers that take their rise far inland. Its savage inhabitants have aroused powerfully the interest and sympathy alike of Christian Polynesians and English missionaries, Who, taking their lives in their hands, have, in not a few instances, laid them down in the effort to Win New Guinea for Christ. Excerpt from Adventures in New Guinea: The Narrative of Louis Tregance, a French Sailor; Nine Years in Captivity Among the Orangwoks, a Tribe in the Interior of New Guinea The following narrative contains tlie life and adventures fLouis Tregance, while in captivity among the Orangwoks, a tribe inhabiting the interior of New Guinea, from which place he made his escape to the continent of Australia. However, it will be better that he should tell his own story, contained in the following narrative; and in introducing it to the public, I will simply explain how I came to accept the task of preparing it for the press, and to what extent I am responsible for wliat is here written. In the beginning of March (the 7 th of that month, I find from my note-book), I was called in to visit a sick parishioner a young man, a stranger to the place. He was suffering from an attack of typhoid fever, and was exceedingly ill. He was apparently about thirty-five years old, and his face was well bronzed. He was the mate of a colonial vessel, and had been taken ill on her arrival in port. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Argonauts of the Western Pacific: An Account of Native Enterprise, and Adventure in the Archipelagoes of Melanesian New Guinea Sir James Frazer, by writing his Preface, has enhanced the value of this volume beyond its merit and it is not only a great honour and advantage for me to be introduced by him, but also a special pleasure, for my first love for ethnology is associated with the reading of the Golden Bough, then in its second edition. Last, not least, I wish to mention Professor C. G. Seligman, to whom this book is dedicated. The initiative of my expedition was given by him and I owe him more than I can express for the encouragement and scientific counsel which he has so generously given me during the progress of my work in New Guinea. Excerpt from Taming New Guinea It appears to be the custom, for writers of books of this description, to begin with apologies as to their style, or excuses for their production. I pretend to no style; but have simply written at the request of my wife, for her information and that of my personnel friends, an account of my life in New Guinea. To the few "men that know" who still survive, in one or two places gaps or omissions may appear to occur; these omissions are intentional, as I have no wish to cause pain to broken men who are still living, nor to distress the relations of those who are dead. Much history is better written fifty years after all concerned in the making are dead. Governor or ruffian, Bishop or cannibal, I have written of all as I found them; I freely confess that I think when the last muster comes, the Great Architect will find - as I trust my readers will - some good points in the ruffians and the cannibals, as well, possibly, as some vulnerable places in the armour of Governors and Bishops. I do not pretend that this book possesses any scientific value; such geographical, zoological, and scientific work as I have done is dealt with in various journals; but it does picture correctly the life of a colonial officer in the one-time furthest outpost of the Empire - men of whose lives and work the average Briton knows nothing. Conditions in New Guinea have altered; where one of Sir William MacGregor's officers stood alone, there now rest a number of Australian officials and clerks. Much credit is now annually given to this host; some little, I think, might be fairly allotted to the dead Moreton, Armit, Green, Kowold, De Lange, and the rest of the gallant gentlemen who gave their lives to win one more country for the flag and to secure the Pax Britannica to yet another people. I have abstained from putting into the mouths of natives the ridiculous jargon or "pidgin English" in which they are popularly supposed to converse. The old style of New Guinea officer spoke Motuan to his men, and I have, where required, merely given a free translation from that language into English. Excerpt from Unexplored New Guinea: A Record of the Travels, Adventures, and Experiences of a Resident Magistrate Amongst the Head-Hunting Savages and Cannibals of the Unexplored Interior of New Guinea Uring a comparatively short but very active life the author, Mr. Wilfred Beaver, has contributed much of value and interest to the gradually accumulating stock of knowledge concerning Papua, as British New Guinea is now officially termed, and his premature death will prove a great loss to the science of anthropology. In 1879 I made a long journey inland, in a northeasterly direction from Port Moresby. I visited many native villages, and explored the mountainous country along the course of and between the Goldie and Laloki rivers. The reader will get some notion of the country, the natives, and their customs, from the following extracts taken from a journal kept at that time. July 15th, 1879.--We left Port Moresby at half-past seven, reaching the Laroki at half-past eleven. We crossed in shallow water near to where the Goldie joins the Laroki. We had eighteen carriers, four of them women, who carried more than the men. After resting awhile at the Laroki we went on about three miles further to Moumiri, the first village of the Koiari tribe of Port Moresby. On entering the village we took them by surprise; the women shouted and the men rushed to their spears. "We called out, Mai, mai, mai (Peace, peace, peace), and, on recognising who we were, they came running twards us with both hands outspread. We met the chief's wife, and she led us up the hill, where there are a number of good native houses. It was shouted on before us that foreigners and Euatoka had arrived, and down the hill the youths came rushing, shaking hands, shouting, and slapping themselves. We were received by the chief under the house, and there we had to sit for a...
