Why are employees in some organizations committed to work while their counterparts in others alienated from it? This question is subjected to empirical analysis in this volume, which identifies two distinct work cultures: `soft' and `synergetic'. Soft culture is typified by pliant management and the dominance in employees' lives of non-work activities and influences, while in the synergetic culture management is assertive, hard work is rewarded, ample welfare is provided and good union relations are cultivated. Sinha demonstrates that Indian socio-cultural values can equally support either kind of work culture.

India has emerged as a major participant in the global market. For example, in the field of information technology it has become an important force in the world. Given this kind of development, management researchers in the recent past have also started showing interest in the Indian business environment and in finding out effective ways of doing business as well as managing people in their Indian operations. They have realised that many of the management practices and managerial styles as applied in the west can not be transplanted exactly in the same manner in the Indian context. The role of culture as it relates to norms, values and behaviour patterns has become increasingly important in the field of management issues. There is considerable evidence (e.g. of Hofstede and Trompenaars/Hampden-Turner) that people of different regions hold different work-related values. Such knowledge is important for international as well as national companies. Norms and values create assumptions and expectations. If they are not the same for people working together, troubles may arise. In 1979, Suzanne C. Kobasa propounded her theory of "hardiness" where she hypothesized her 3Cs: Commitment, Control, and Challenge, as the basic ingredients of hardiness that make an individual stress resilient. She was one of the early researchers who paid attention to personality features and illustrated that individuals who experience high level of stress without mental and physical illness have a different personality from those who become ill in stressful conditions. In current times, the discourse has enjoyed a sustained scholarly interest but there is hardly any study on the corporate professionals or the Indian context.
