(...) 1.2 Zielsetzung der Arbeit Die vorliegende Arbeit hat zum Ziel, die Wichtigkeit der Vereinbarkeit von Familie und Beruf aufzuzeigen. Die Darstellung der Vorteile, sowohl für die Unternehmen, als auch für die Betroffenen, und nicht zuletzt für die Politik, soll aufzeigen, dass Frauen zwischen Familie und Beruf eine wichtige Ressource darstellen. Diese wird zunehmend als Kapital und weniger als Kostenfaktor in den Unternehmen angesehen. In modern geführten Unternehmen werden Mitarbeitende heute nicht nur als Produktionsfaktor oder immaterielle Ressourcen verbucht, sondern als kritische Erfolgsfaktoren wahrgenommen. Damit werden sie als Wert für die gesamte Unternehmung entwickelt, geführt und gefördert. Aufgrund des demografischen Wandels entwickelt sich ein immer höherer Bedarf an gut ausgebildeten Erwerbstätigen. Der Konkurrenzkampf um dieses Kapital steigt an. Ein direkter Beitrag zum Erfolg eines Unternehmens ist also die Investition in den „Personalkörper“. Daraus folgen höhere Kundenzufriedenheit und Kundenbindung. Bei vergleichbarer Personalpolitik ergeben sich ein stärkeres Umsatzwachstum und eine höhere Profitstabilität. Nicht nur deshalb ist familienbewusste Personalpolitik ein zentrales Thema der Regierung. Immer mehr Menschen entscheiden sich aus finanziellen Gründen gegen eine Familie. Der politische Auftrag lautet „Förderung der Familie“. Sowohl das BMFSFJ mit dem Programm „Erfolgsfaktor Familie“, als auch das BMWi mit der Kampagne „Beruf und Familie“ legen wichtige Meilensteine zur Verbesserung der gegenwärtigen der Situation. (...) Das Ziel der sehr ausführlichen Vorstellung des Hamburger Projekts ist, Unternehmen wie Privatpersonen die staatliche Unterstützung familienfreundlicher Maßnahmen transparent zu machen. Davon ausgehend, dass Profit steigernde Innovationen schon immer bevorzugte Richtungen des Unternehmertums gewesen sind, soll ein weiterer Schritt hin zur Familienpolitik durch die Entwicklung und Umsetzung von eigenen Ideen gewiesen werden. Unternehmen in Deutschland haben daher erkannt, dass die Priorität bei der Ausgestaltung einer betrieblichen Personalpolitik auf den Bedürfnissen der Fachkräfte basieren muss, um zukunftsfähig zu bleiben. Entsprechende Maßnahmen, insbesondere zur Förderung der Vereinbarkeit von Beruf und Familie, werden in der Gesellschaft und Arbeitswelt zur Schaffung von adäquaten Rahmenbedingungen zur Mitarbeiterbindung und Mitarbeiterzufriedenheit bereits umgesetzt. Aktuell weisen schon rund 77% der Unternehmen in Deutschland einer familienfreundlichen Arbeitswelt einen hohen Stellenwert zu. Berufstätige Eltern befinden sich jedoch in einer Zwickmühle. Auf der einen Seite werden die Ansprüche an ihre berufliche Leistungsfähigkeit durch den Arbeitgeber erhöht, auf der anderen Seite wollen sie gleichermaßen gut ihre Rolle innerhalb der Familie ausfüllen. Nach einer Studie aus 2011 sind nur 21% der befragten Arbeitnehmer in Deutschland mit den aktuellen Möglichkeiten zur Vereinbarkeit von Familie und Beruf zufrieden. Die Wirtschaft sowie der Staat stehen hier in der Verantwortung, Rahmenbedingungen für eine verbesserte Vereinbarkeit zu schaffen. Work-Life-Balance scheint hierbei ein wichtiges Schlagwort zu sein, welches die Kompatibilität von Job und Privatleben beschreibt. Die meisten Un-ternehmen bieten daher mittlerweile vielfältige Aktivitäten an, um Voraussetzungen zu schaffen, die eine Work-Life-Balance unterstützen und ins-besondere Eltern in ihrer Doppelrolle entlasten. Die Elternzeit nimmt einen wichtigen Platz unter den familienfreundlichen Maßnahmen ein, vor allem aufgrund ihrer Einzigartigkeit. Sie ist die einzige gesetzlich verankerte Regelung, die zum Ziel hat, die häusliche Betreuung von Kindern zu erleichtern. Des Weiteren ermöglicht sie Berufstätigen eine bezahlte Auszeit von der beruflichen Tätigkeit zur Betreuung von Kindern zu nehmen. Während dieser „betrieblichen Pause“ haben Eltern die Mög-lichkeit, ausschließlich zu Hause zu bleiben und sie sind nicht in das berufliche Tagesgeschäft eingebunden.

This book portrays men’s experiences of home alone leave and how it affects their lives and family gender roles in different policy contexts and explores how this unique parental leave design is implemented in these contrasting policy regimes. The book brings together three major theoretical strands: social policy, in particular the literature on comparative leave policy developments; family and gender studies, in particular the analysis of gendered divisions of work and care and recent shifts in parenting and work-family balance; critical studies of men and masculinities, with a specific focus on fathers and fathering in contemporary western societies and life-courses. Drawing on empirical data from in-depth interviews with fathers across eleven countries, the book shows that the experiences and social processes associated with fathers’ home alone leave involve a diversity of trends, revealing both innovations and absence of change, including pluralization as well as the constraining influence of policy, gender, and social context. As a theoretical and empirical book it raises important issues on modernization of the life course and the family in contemporary societies. The book will be of particular interest to scholars in comparing western societies and welfare states as well as to scholars seeking to understand changing work-life policies and family life in societies with different social and historical pathways.

Work-life integration is an increasingly hot topic in the media, social research, governments and in people’s everyday lives. This volume offers a new type of lens for understanding work-family reconciliation by studying how work-family dynamics are shaped, squeezed and developed between consistent or competing logics in different societies in Europe and the US.
