In recent decades an extensive array of changes and innovations have taken place in and across work organizations and networks of organizations and workers, facilitated by new technologies and technological forms. This has initiated an interest in technological change as one of the conditions for organizational action and researchers have begun to draw inspiration from a wider spectrum of conceptual issues, perspectives and theoretical traditions. This book is interested in the level of praxis and how this might be understood and theorized. It brings together a comprehensive collection of empirically-grounded and theoretically-informed research projects from studies of organizational practice which explore a number of technological changes in a variety of contexts. These are informed by contemporary debates within and across theoretical approaches including the sociology of technology, work and organizations, actor network theory, technology as text and metaphor, processual and political perspectives, social and business network-based approaches to the analysis of technology and innovation, and the social construction and shaping of technology. This book will be essential reading for researchers and advanced students within the field of technology, work and organizations and also organization studies and management studies.

The chapters of this work summarize the results of 35 years dedicated to studying how technologies change work & organizations. The first chapter places current developments in artificial intelligence into the historical context of previous technological revolutions by drawing on William Faunce's argument that the history of technology is one of progressive automation of the four components of any production system: energy, transformation, & transfer & control technologies. The second chapter lays out a role-based theory of how technologies occasion changes in organizations. The third chapter tackles the issue of how to conceptualize a more thorough approach to assessing how intelligent technologies, such as AI, can shape work & employment. The fourth chapter discusses what has been learned over the years about the fears that arise when one sets out to study technical work & technical workers.

Technological change is a global process affecting many different aspects of work, the organisation, and life in the workplace. To facilitate the process of adjusting to such change, this paper proposes an assessment and intervention approach based on co-operation between the different players involved in the process of change. It uses a fictitious example, derived from several case studies, to illustrate how the proposed intervention strategies can be applied. This example helps to identify several elements that enable definition of a viewpoint on the issue of technological change within organisations. The paper then describes some of the methods that can be used to apply a global management approach for implementing technological change. It concludes with a look at why and how the authors promote a design, implementation, and management process that is based on the involvement of all those affected by the change, beginning with front-line users.

Technological change is exciting as much as it is daunting. The arrival of new digital tools affects consumption patterns, types of employment and working conditions, and can pose challenges to organizations and individuals alike. Indeed, although technological change is a factor for economic growth, it can also be an amplifier, or even a catalyst, of inequality. It is also a social change and interacts in complex ways: technology is both the source and the consequence of social transformation. To understand technological change and to harness its effects, this book studies transformations at different levels (societal, organizational and individual). In its analysis of the subject, it also draws on a number of disciplines of the human and social sciences, such as anthropology, sociology and psychology.

The Machine At Work written by Keith Grint and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-28 with Social Science categories.

This highly topical book is a concise and accessible account of the relationship between technology and work. Firstly, it reviews and critically assesses a variety of recent approaches to the social and cultural dimensions of technology. Secondly, it examines the implications of these new approaches for existing ideas about the nature of technology and work organization. At the core of much thinking about technology is the assumption that the technical character and capacity of artefacts is given. The enduring image of deus ex machina captures the idea that it is the essential capacity 'within' a technology which, in the end, accounts for the way we organize ourselves, our work and other life experiences. Recent work in the sociology of technology, by contrast, sets out relativist and constructivist accounts of technology, which begin to challenge this central assumption. The Machine at Work includes a reinterpretation of the Luddites; a review of the social processes of development in information technology; a reassessment of theories of the role of technology in work; and an analysis of the common limitations of some constructivist and feminist perspectives on technology. The book argues that only a commitment to a particular conception of constructivism enables the kind of radical rethinking about technology and work relations that is needed. This engaging and informative text will be of interest to students in a range of subject areas - from sociology, organizational theory and behaviour, to industrial relations, management and business studies.

Excerpt from Technological Change in the Production Process: Organizational Implications and Responses; Wp#3050-89-Bps; July 1989 The introduction of new process technologies can cause significant disruption to ongoing Operations. This paper examines the sources of such disruption and attempts to identify organizational response mechanisms effective in countering them. To better understand the nature of organizational tasks involved, two distinct characteristics of technological change technical complexity and systemic shift are identified. Results from a study of 48 new process introduction projects suggest that these characteristics are associated with the duration of disruption experienced. Traditional economic measures of project scope are shown to be relatively poor indicators of disruptive potential. Further, the organization's response to the introduction, both before and after physical installation of the new equipment, is an important determinant of project success in terms of both disrup tion experienced and operating gains achieved. However, evidence is presented to indicate that different kinds of technological changes may require different patterns of organizational response.
