An urgent and informed look at the challenges Britain and world governments will face in a post-Covid-19 world. The Covid crisis has not just highlighted the failures of certain governments, it is accelerating a shift in the balance of power from West to East. After a decade where politics in the US and the UK has been consumed with inward-facing struggles, countries like South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, as well as China, have made extraordinary advances economically, technologically and politically. In this beautifully crafted essay, Micklethwait and Wooldridge explain how we ended up in this mess and explore the possible routes out. If Western governments respond creatively to the crisis, they will have a chance of reversing decades of decline; if they dither and delay while Asia continues to improve, the prospect of a new Eastern-dominated world order will increase. The big question facing the world is whether the West can rise to the challenge as it has before.

Current economic difficulties and the challenge of competing in the world market have necessitated a rethinking of American approaches to the utilization of people in organizations. Management now recognizes a need to have workers take on more responsibility at the points of production, of sale, and of service rendered if the United States is to compete in rapidly changing world markets. This development means that much more is expected of even entry-level members of the American workforce. Thus, even more is expected of our high schools and colleges to provide this type of workforce. The need of American management for workers with greater skills and who can take on greater responsibility has spawned many commissions, task forces, and studies. All of them have contributed to the vast evidence documenting the need for a more highly skilled workforce. These studies are summarized and synthesized in this book. However, what remains largely undone is the development of methods to assess the necessary skills that have been identified. A major portion of this book deals with assessment issues. Workforce Readiness: Competencies and Assessment explores the state-of-the-art in the specification of competencies (skills) and their assessment for students entering the world of work from both high school and college. Both individual and team competencies are examined via data that has been reported and collected in various settings--schools, laboratories, and industrial facilities.

Everyone knows that boys are falling behind in education. Largely left out of the discussion are parents of boys, who are most aware that their bright, eager sons hit an invisible wall somewhere near fourth grade, after which they become disengaged, discouraged, and disaffected. There are dozens of books on underachieving boys, but most parents brave enough to lift one off the shelf are instantly intimidated by the footnotes, graphs, case studies, and academic-speak addressed almost entirely to educators. What about the average guilt-ridden, frustrated mother or father of an underachieving boy? Jump-Starting Boys is the first book on the market that empowers parents, helping them reclaim the duties and rewards of raising their children and navigate the influences of school and media. Filled with reassurance and support, the authors turn fear and guilt into can-do confidence. Through easy tips and action list sidebars, this is the most practical, readable book on the topic.

What qualities make a leader succeed in business or politics? In an era when the information revolution has dramatically changed the playing field, when old organizational hierarchies have given way to fluid networks of contacts, and when mistrust of leaders is on the rise, our ideas about leadership are clearly due for redefinition. With The Powers to Lead, Joseph S. Nye offers a sweeping look at the nature of leadership in today's world, in an illuminating blend of history, business case studies, psychological research, and more. As he observes, many now believe that the more authoritarian and coercive forms of leadership--the hard power approaches of earlier military-industrial eras--have been largely supplanted in postindustrial societies by soft power approaches that seek to attract, inspire, and persuade rather than dictate. Nye argues, however, that the most effective leaders are actually those who combine hard and soft power skills in proportions that vary with different situations. He calls this smart power. Drawing examples from the careers of leaders as disparate as Gandhi, Churchill, Lee Iacocca, and George W. Bush, Nye uses the concept of smart power to shed light on such topics as leadership types and skills, the needs and demands of followers, and the nature of good and bad leadership in terms of both ethics and effectiveness. In one particularly instructive chapter, he looks in depth at contextual intelligence--the ability to understand changing environments, capitalize on trends, and use the flow of events to implement strategies. Thoroughly grounded in the real world, rich in both analysis and anecdote, The Powers to Lead is sure to become a modern classic, a concise and lucid work applicable to every field, from small businesses and nonprofit organizations to nations on the world stage. This paperback edition includes a new preface by the author.

What is happening to our country and to my beautiful city of Memphis, Tennessee hurts deeply. With an in-depth analysis of what she believes is the sobering cause of the cycle of violence occurring in many of our major cities, the author points to breakdown of the traditional American family. She blames generational government dependency for robbing people of all cultures of their dignity and of the incentive to be self sufficient and to achieve the American dream. Coming from poverty, the author states she has a huge heart for the underprivileged. Her mission is to break the cycle of despair before it is too late. If we do not face the problem, it will never be fixed, she says.

Exploring why prison officers leave His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) and the processes and trajectories involved in returning to ‘civilian life’, this book examines the reasons that prison officers want to leave HMPPS and how they transition back to ‘civvy street’. As well as presenting qualitative data from interviews with ex-prison officers, the authors also draw analytically on their ‘insider’ positionality to offer insights on the lived experience of prison officers both in the role and on their subsequent departure from the service. In doing so, they identify the rewards and challenges of working in a prison environment, while using Ebaugh’s (1988) four-stage model of role exit as a theoretical framework to help understand the process of leaving the prison service. Among the issues addressed are the impact of austerity, the Voluntary Early Departure Scheme, the decline in transmission of knowledge (‘jail craft’) to new recruits, high staff turnover, increased violence and the impact of COVID-19. These are counterbalanced by an exposition of what ex-prison officers recall positively about their time in service, such as loyalty, support, solidarity and pride in the uniform and helping prisoners with their custodial lives. The authors also put forward practical recommendations for ways in which HMPPS could encourage prison officers to stay in post for longer. Providing authentic insights into the role of ex-prison officers, this book is ideal reading for students and academics of criminology, penology, criminal justice, sociology and criminal psychology. It will also be of interest to criminal justice practitioners and organisations such as Unlocked Graduates, the Howard League for Penal Reform and the Prison Reform Trust.
