This book is an open house that will allow the world to view my experience working in the Alberta oil sand industry. I am a retired senior, who has been working in this phenomenal industry for many years and who has seen and experienced the technological changes that have been engineered to provide a safer and more productive environment for the exploration of Northern Alberta buried treasure. Distribution of wealth is a loaded statement in our democratic society. In the Alberta oil sand, I can safely use this statement because I have experienced the distribution of wealth in this remarkable industry. Oil sand companies are developing the oil sand industry, providing opportunity, where seniors like me and others, can become a member of the industries' working family and share in the distribution of health and wealth. Equal opportunity does not mean equal pay. However, we are all given the opportunity to work and share in the development and distribution of this industry's most valuable buried treasure.

Working on an offshore drilling rig is something most people will never get to experience in their lifetime. It is like no other workplace in the world and only those who have worked offshore can appreciate the diversity of people, cultures and roles that are represented in their remote "office." Offshore Oil and Gas PEOPLE is an overview of what it's like to work on an oil rig, and the role everyone plays in getting the job done safely and on time. The saying "Time is Money" is the mantra that everyone works to offshore with wells costing up to one hundred million dollars to drill. With such big money at stake it's easy to see why it is such a high-pressured environment to work in. This handy guide can serve as a pre-deployment induction manual for all new starters in the industry so they know what to expect when they get to a rig for the first time. There are lots of rules and regulations when working offshore and knowing what to expect before you disembark from the chopper that very first time will help make your introduction to the industry that much easier. For people wanting to get into the industry, this book explains the many roles that can be explored; from an entry-level no-experience-needed role to those that are highly specialized and found nowhere else in the world. This hi-tech and fast-paced industry has something to offer anyone looking for a challenging career beyond the 9 to 5 grind of city life. This book is also an informative guide for family or friends of offshore workers who up until now have had no idea what their loved ones actually do when they are at work...and also for those who already work offshore and have no idea what the rest of the people on the rig actually do!

The oil and gas industry is going through a major technological shift. This is particularly true of the Norwegian continental shelf where new work processes are being implemented based on digital infrastructure and information technology. The term Integrated Operations (IO) has been applied to this set of new processes. It is defined by the Centre for Integrated Operations in the Petroleum Industry as 'work processes and technology to make smarter decisions and better execution, enabled by ubiquitous real time data, collaborative techniques and access to multiple expertise'. It's claimed that IO is efficient, optimises exploration, reduces costs and improves safety performance. However, the picture is not as clear-cut as it may appear. On the one hand, the new work processes do not prevent major accidents: IO-related factors have been identified in recent events such as the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe. On the other hand, IO technology provides improved decision-making support (such as access to real-time data and expertise), which can reduce human and material losses and damage to the environment. Given these very different properties, it's vital that the industry has a detailed understanding of the benefits and drawbacks of IO, which this book sets out to do from a multidisciplinary point of view. It analyses Integrated Operations from the angles of statistics, management science, human factors and resilience engineering. These varied disciplines provide a multifaceted understanding of IO that better informs risk assessment practices, as well as explaining new techniques and methods and provides state-of-the-art guidance to risk assessment practitioners working in the oil and gas industry.

Education and Training for the Oil and Gas Industry: Localising Oil and Gas Operations, Volume Four in the Getenergy series will set out the case for localising the oil and gas operations within hydrocarbon-producing countries. The focus of this final Volume in the series will be to explore the value of engaging with local suppliers, local talent and other local stakeholders in the exploration and production of oil and gas resources. Specifically, we will set out an agenda around which operators and service companies can coalesce and that highlights the ways in which smart, targeted investments in education, training and local infrastructure can create a new way of doing business, particularly in developing or emerging energy economies. Getenergy Intelligence have developed a unique tool to evaluate the potential cost benefits of localisation for any given project. This volume lays out the rationale, methodology and processes we have developed to successfully map out localisation and implement strategic capacity development for oil and gas operations. The significant cost benefits of localisation have been recognised by a number of major oil and gas companies, but localisation is still an aspect of doing business that is poorly understood by much of the global industry. In the first section of this book, the authors provide the rationale for localisation and layout the core reasons for developing the tool. In the second section, the tool is described and the exact methodology is explained. In the final section the authors provide three case studies, demonstrating the tool in action and showing how we are able to measure the cost effectiveness and wider value of a coherent approach to localisation. Three detailed case studies exploring the benefits of localising the oil and gas workforce A rigorous economic rationale for localisation of oil and gas projects. Explores how localisation (and investment in local education, training and talent within that) is at the core of a successful oil and gas business in the 21st century Methods of implementing a strategy to educate and train local people in order to meet the core business needs around individual oil and gas projects
