Understanding and decoding analogies is a skill that is transferable to reading comprehension, critical thinking, and creativity. Analogies can be expressed in visual, symbolic, numerical, verbal, and inferential terms. Analogies help students develop the ability to make and appreciate connections between and among a variety of stimuli. As students become more adept at using, creating, and deciphering analogies, the process of transferring and expressing the inherent nature of analogies becomes a "thinking game" for them. The game can be successfully played at almost any level of thinking. The use of analogy-based thinking can then be applied effectively to thinking about ideas and concepts in the array of facts, terms, and information presented throughout the various curricula students encounter at any grade in school. This book is divided into five main sections based upon the type of relationship described by the analogies in it: Part to Whole / Whole to Part; Synonyms / Antonyms; Cause to Effect / Effect to Cause; Purpose, Use or Function; and Degree; Part to Whole / Whole to Part. The analogies in this section describe the relationship between a thing and a piece or building block of that thing and vice versa; Synonyms / Antonyms. The analogies in this section describe the relationship between a thing and something that is similar in meaning (Synonym) or a thing and something that is opposite in meaning (Antonym); Cause to Effect / Effect to Cause. The analogies in this section describe the relationship between an event or happening and a resulting change or outcome and vice versa; Purpose, Use or Function. The analogies in this section describe the relationship between an object or a concept and how it works or why it exists; Degree. The analogies in this section describe the relationship between an object or an idea and the increasing or decreasing value of that object or idea. Understanding and decoding analogies is a skill transferable to reading comprehension, critical thinking, and creativity. Opportunities to create analogies are provided as well as structured and open-ended practice.

Important inventions have been inspired by seeing parallels in analogies. For example, the idea of a printing press came from a wine press. The power of analogies has been well documented, as in the book "Shortcut: How Analogies Reveal Connections, Spark Innovation, and Sell Our Greatest Ideas" (Penguin Random House, 2014) by John Pollack. My book __ "International Analogies" __is a collection of art and text mostly from students I have taught in Nevada. The work from students living in China, India and Germany came to me by e-mail from the children of friends living abroad. Their work is proof that students can think creatively through analogies. The process of writing and illustrating their analogies helped these students develop critical thinking. The students whose analogies are contained in "International Analogies" range in age from an 8-year-old boy living in Guilin, China, to adults learning English as a second language at Truckee Meadows Community College and the Northern Nevada Literacy Council, in Reno, Nevada. The book also includes the work of Adult Basic Education students working to get a high school diploma, and one student challenged by dyslexia. "International Analogies" is formatted, and photographed to facilitate word recognition and prediction skills__which are essential to reading success. The analogy puzzles in the book are based on photographs from my book__"Analogies for Young Kids Book 2". The puzzles were designed by Sierra Nevada Journeys: a non-profit science education organization in northern Nevada. The puzzles on comparative anatomy can be removed from the book and cut apart. Through the use of analogies, students seem to be leess resistant to the process. Analogies also help us to better understand the point of reference for the student. The use of analogies is not a new experience for most people. If you listen to everyday speech, you will find most people using analogies to describe a situation, how they feel, or what they want to do. Analogies are a way of talking about experiences. We each experience life uniquely, so it is not possible to communicate identical interpretations of our experiences. Analogies help define our experiences to others by creating colored pictures. Like a collage, layers of meaning are built from expansion of the analogy in exploration of its likeness and dissimilarities to the experience being described. In working with students many resistances are bypassed when you tell a story. Analogies develop a kind of story, a word-picture. The counselor can make contact with the student, a primary goal of counseling, through these creative encounters. As you are developing an analogy together, the counseling process unfolds in a way that is less threatening to the student. Included in the book are some guidelines on when and how to use analogies. There is also an example of how to construct an analogy with a student. Counseling is Like... presents analogies in six major categories: the art of counseling, counselor growth, student growth, habits and good mental health relationships and endings. READER REVIEWS Counseling is Like. . . The use of analogies in counseling by Margaret Ross, Ph.D. is a practical and creative guide for shaping the counseling process. Dr. Ross marvelously provides a wide array of analogies that can be used in the counselor-student exchange. She provides an analogy that can guide many scenarios that a counselor can expect to encounter. For example, Dr. Ross provides analogies that can used for student issues of self-esteem; learning how to make decisions and solving one's problems; helping students to take responsibility for their future in spite of past experiences; students in a state of panic; students seeking a sense of belonging; addressing poor academic work; developing healthy habits; managing relationships; and allowing students to grow at their own pace. Dr. Ross approaches counseling from a student (client) centered perspective. She uses analogies to ensure the counseling process is not centered on the counselor. Dr. Ross stresses that the counseling process is two-way and that analogies evolve through collaborative creativity between counselor and student. She describes how problems may be common but the personal contexts of these common problems can be quite different and thus require very different intervention strategies. In the process, both the student and counselor grow from their exchanges. As Dr. Ross points out, each of us hold very different frames of reference that influence how we view events and situations. Counselors need to learn as best they can about the frames of reference of the students who seek counseling and concomitantly be in touch with their own frame of reference. Dr. Ross stresses that it is essential for counselors to be aware of the impact of their opinions of themselves in various situations and other life issues that may influence the counseling interactions. She emphasizes the focus be on students since it is the student's needs that are to be met. Dr. Ross provides a no-nonsense, straight forward, informative, and readable resource for dealing with a variety of single and multi-dimensional issues with students. Over the past century, educational psychologists and researchers have posited many theories to explain how individuals learn, i.e. how they acquire, organize and deploy knowledge and skills.
