World Enough Time written by Christian McEwen and has been published by Bauhan Pub this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
World Enough & Time focuses on the positive effect of deliberately simple living on creativity. McEwen juxtaposes religious traditions of both the East and West, and intertwines words of wisdom from writers ranging from Montaigne to Ralph Waldo Emerson and from Virginia Woolf to Jack Kerouac to Adrienne Rich, artists and musicians from John Ruskin to Meredith Monk, and myriad psychologists, linguists, philosophers, and scholars. In so doing, she creates a unique combination of history, spirituality, and practical advice about how to incorporate slowness and its benefits into everyday living. In short, it's what she calls “inspiration for the literate reader.” According to McEwen, the nonstop emphasis on productivity that is so prevalent in our society is counterproductive for anyone wanting to be creative. She describes a typical response to the question, “How are you?”, regardless of age, race, class, and gender: “I'm just so busy. Really, I'm crazy-busy,” branding it as a mark of honor. Yet, she continues, “When people are asked where they get their best ideas, again and again they answer, 'In the bathroom,' 'On vacation,' 'Doing nothing.' They begin, in other words, by 'simply being.'” If we slow down, McEwen asserts, we can appreciate Henry David Thoreau's comment that, “A broad margin of leisure is as beautiful in a man's life as in a book.” She adds, “Thoreau knew too, what contemporary thinkers are just beginning to understand – that the human mind is not some isolated little manikin inside our heads; rather it is fed and nourished by every sight and smell and sound that we encounter, from the movement of the clouds to the shrill of the birds outside our morning window.” World Enough & Time extols the benefits of observation, conversation, walking, pausing and dreaming within a literary and artistic framework spanning centuries. Among the lessons learned from the great minds are: “It is in our idleness, in our dreams, that the submerged truth sometimes comes to the top.” —Virginia Woolf “Beware the barrenness of a busy life.” —Socrates “Seek society. Keep your friendships in repair. Answer your letters. Meet good-will half way.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson “We shared our ideas like sweaters, with easy exchange and lack of ownership” —Ann Patchett on her friendship with Lucy Greeley.“Creative work needs solitude. It needs concentration, without interruptions. It needs the whole sky to fly in, and no eye watching till it comes to that certainty which it aspires to…” —Mary Oliver “Art has something to do with the achievement of stillness in the midst of chaos…” —Saul Bellow World Enough & Time is the result of thirty years of thinking, teaching and writing in the midst of a busy world. Turning to stories of the writers and artists she has studied all these years, McEwen finds that “each anecdote is its own parable of truth.”

Although the century which followed Andrew Marvell's death remembered him primarily as a politician and a pamphleteer, this gifted poet is responsible for some of the most brilliant lyric exploration of his time. World Enough and Time is an extensive biography written by Nicholas Murray, a biographer whose literary scholarship and political astuteness matches that of his subject.

"For me, getting older physically seems to be epitomized in the feeling that I look like my mother. She's really attractive ... It's just that I can see that she's older, and I'm not supposed to be." - Charlotte Wilson Hammond "My view of the world is slowly becoming more integrated. Sometimes I feel as if I've walked to the top of a mountain, and can look down and see all around." - Lesia Gregorovitch "Some women have told me that they're too old at fifty. And I wondered to myself why - at fifty - would anyone think herself too old?" - Linda Silver Dranoff "Now I look upon everything I do ... and say, 'Is this how I'm going to be using the energy that I have, or am I going to use it in a different way?" - Roberta Bondar "The most important thing is not to be afraid." - Kim Campbell

With our lives firmly controlled by the steady pace of time, humans have yearned for ways to escape its constraints, and authors have responded with narratives about traveling far into the past or future, reversing the flow of time, or creating alternate universes. This book considers how imaginative works involving time travel reflect ongoing scientific concerns and examine the human condition. The scope of the volume is unusually wide, covering such topics as Dante, the major novels of the 19th century, and stories and films of the 1990s. The book concludes with a lengthy bibliography of short stories and novels, films and television programs, and nonfiction works that feature time travel or speculations about time.

Newton's Principia introduced conceptions of space and time that launched one of themost famous and sustained debates in the history of physics, a controversy that involves fundamentalconcerns in the foundations of physics, metaphysics, and scientific epistemology. This bookintroduces and clarifies the historical and philosophical development of the clash between Newton'sabsolute conception of space and Leibniz's relational one. It separates the issues and provides newperspectives on absolute relational accounts of motion and relational-substantival accounts of theontology of space time.Earman's sustained treatment and imaginative insights raise to a new levelthe debate on these important issues at the boundary of philosophy and physics. He surveys thehistory of the controversy from Newton to Einstein develops the mathematics and physics needed topose the issues in sharp form and provides a persuasive assessment of the philosophical problemsinvolved. Most importantly, Earman revitalizes the connection of the debate to contemporary science. He shows, for example, how concerns raised by Leibniz form the core of ongoing debate on thefoundations of general theory of relativity, moving the discussion into a new and vital arena andintroducing arguments that will be discussed for years to come.John Earman is Professor of Historyand Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh. The Language and Literature Reader is an invaluable resource for students of English literature, language, and linguistics. Bringing together the most significant work in the field with integrated editorial material, this Reader is a structured and accessible tool for the student and scholar. Divided into three sections, Foundations, Developments and New Directions, the Reader provides an overview of the discipline from the early stages in the 1960s and 70s, through the new theories and practices of the 1980s and 90s, to the most recent and contemporary work in the field. Each article contains a brief introduction by the editors situating it in the context of developing work in the discipline and glossing it in terms of the section and of the book as a whole. The final section concludes with a ‘history and manifesto’, written by the editors, which places developments in the area of stylistics within a brief history of the field and offers a polemical perspective on the future of a growing and influential discipline.
