Encyclopedia Of World S Fairs And Expositions written by John E. Findling and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-12 with History categories.

This encyclopedia contains individual histories of each of the nearly 100 World's Fairs and expositions held in more than 20 countries since 1851. This is a thorough revision and updating of the book originally published as A Historical Dictionary of World's Fairs and Expositions in 1990. The new entries include essays on the world's fairs to be held in Zaragoza, Spain, in 2008 and in Shanghai, China, in 2010. Many of the original essays have been revised and expanded. Topics covered include goods, tourism, nationalistic competition, architecture, art and culture, and "exhibition fatigue." Each fair history has its own annotated bibliography which provides, when possible, the location of relevant primary sources and comments on the quality of secondary sources. Appendices cover the Bureau of International Expositions, fair statistics, fair officials, fairs that did not qualify for inclusion, and fairs that were planned but never held. The book includes a foreword (and appendix) by Vicente Gonzalez Loscertales, the secretary general of the Bureau of International Expositions.

Fair America written by Robert W. Rydell and has been published by Smithsonian Institution this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-04 with History categories.

Since their inception with New York's Crystal Palace Exhibition in the mid-nineteenth century, world's fairs have introduced Americans to “exotic” pleasures such as belly dancing and the Ferris Wheel; pathbreaking technologies such as telephones and X rays; and futuristic architectural, landscaping, and transportation schemes. Billed by their promoters as “encyclopedias of civilization,” the expositions impressed tens of millions of fairgoers with model environments and utopian visions. Setting more than 30 world’s fairs from 1853 to 1984 in their historical context, the authors show that the expositions reflected and influenced not only the ideals but also the cultural tensions of their times. As mainstays rather than mere ornaments of American life, world’s fairs created national support for such issues as the social reunification of North and South after the Civil War, U.S. imperial expansion at the turn of the 20th-century, consumer optimism during the Great Depression, and the essential unity of humankind in a nuclear age.

World Of Fairs written by Robert W. Rydell and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-11 with History categories.

In the depths of the Great Depression, when America's future seemed bleak, nearly one hundred million people visited expositions celebrating the "century of progress." These fairs fired the national imagination and served as cultural icons on which Americans fixed their hopes for prosperity and power. World of Fairs continues Robert W. Rydell's unique cultural history—begun in his acclaimed All the World's a Fair—this time focusing on the interwar exhibitions. He shows how the ideas of a few—particularly artists, architects, and scientists—were broadcast to millions, proclaiming the arrival of modern America—a new empire of abundance build on old foundations of inequality. Rydell revisits several fairs, highlighting the 1926 Philadelphia Sesquicentennial, the 1931 Paris Colonial Exposition, the 1933-34 Chicago Century of Progress Exposition, the 1935-36 San Diego California Pacific Exposition, the 1936 Dallas Texas Centennial Exposition, the 1937 Cleveland Great Lakes and International Exposition, the 1939-40 San Francisco Golden Gate International Exposition, the 1939-40 New York World's Fair, and the 1958 Brussels Universal Exposition.

When the gates of the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair swung open on April 24, 1964, the first of more than 51 million lucky visitors entered, ready to witness the cutting edge of worldwide technology and progress. Faced with a disappointing lack of foreign participants due to political contention, the fair instead showcased the best of American industry and science. While multimillion-dollar pavilions predicted colonies on the moon and hotels under the ocean, other forecasts, such as the promises of computer technology, have surpassed even the most optimistic predictions of the fair. The 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair: Creation and Legacy uses rare, previously unpublished photographs to examine the creation of the fair and the legacies left behind for future generations.

Excerpt from History of the World's Fair: Being a Complete Description of the World's Columbian Exposition From Its Inception You want me to express my opinion in regard to the Fair. I cannot talk to you about it from an artistic standpoint, for I know very little about art. I can only tell its effect upon me and, inferentially, what it will be upon 10,000,000 of people. I think it will astound every one who visits it, both on account of its magnitude and what they will consider its artistic merits. It would be fairy-like if it were not so colossal. It is a vision snatched from dreams whose lines have been brought out and well defined by the iodine of art. As an educational force and inspiration I believe the buildings, their grouping, and laying out of the grounds will in themselves do more good in a general way than the exhibits themselves, by the exaltation that it will inspire in every man, woman, and child who may have any emotions, and who has none, that may come to view it. I think that the prospect from Lake Michigan will impress every one who approaches it from that side by the tout ensemble which will be presented. I never looked at it without thinking of Claude Melnotte's description to Pauline of his palace by the Lake of Como. I was at Nice some years ago, and one morning in November I looked from my balcony up the distant mountain side and saw the cataract going over the dam, the Alps in the background, with the olive groves and the blue Mediterranean far above ground, and I said to my wife: "Every one who can should come to Nice to put in a stock of material for dreams." I think the Exposition furnishes a magazine for dreams equally as grand and more attractive. I have no doubt that, notwithstanding the vast amount of literature and illustrations which has been issued describing the Fair, the expectations of our people and those from abroad will be more than realized. I never go down to it but what I am lifted up to a higher plane, and feel more enthusiasm in regard to its real magnitude and merit. If it was within the range of constitutional legislation it would pay the Government of the United States to bring free of expense ten millions of our people who will not have the money to come.
