Excerpt from World Wheat Prospects: January 31, 1933 Consequently, there are a number of hopeful aspects in the supply side of the wheat marketing outlook during 1933 in spite of continued heavy stocks in accounted for positions. In view of indications of the past 6 months, both in the United States and abroad, that the declines of business activity have been stopped, here seem to be fairly good prospects that demand conditions will be no worse than in the past year. Hence there is reason to believe that conditio in the world's wheat markets may show a gradual though irregular improvement during the coming year. Excerpt from World Wheat Prospects: January 27, 1936 The prolonged cold wave in the United States was finally broken about February 22 by a marked change to warmer weather, causing the snow and ice to melt leaving the ground bare in much of the wheat belt. During the cold period the upper mlsslsslppl Valley, Lake Regions, and the Great Plains southward to northern Missouri were well protected. In the Ohio Valley, condition generally appears only about fair, with more or less damage from the prolonged cold weather. In Missouri much wheat in the southwestern part is believed dead but elsewhere condition in the State is believed good. In Iowa the ground is still well covered with snow, except in some northern sections. In Kansas the snow cover has largely disappeared With moisture good in the eastern third, barely sufficient in the middle third, and deficie in the West; in the latter, the 8011 is blowing and considerable damage probable. Wheat is shoving in the eastern third of Kansas, but it is reporte frozen. Wheat needs moisture badly in western Oklahoma and southeastern Colorado, and while rains mould be beneficial in both Texas and Oklahoma, con dition 18 still fair to good. 'montana has been benefited by considerable snow and recently some rain. In the Peeific Northwest there has been good snow protection in parts, but the general condition is uncertain. Excerpt from The Wheat Situation: August 1960 World wheat crop prospects indicate a crop second only to the record production in 1958. Though it is too early for firm estimates in many countries, especially in the Southern Hemisphere, preliminary prospects are for a 5 per cent increase above the large 1959 harvest of billion bushels. Increases mainly in North America and Asia are partly offset by smaller crops in Europe. Current prospects for world trade in the marketing year beginning July 1, 1960 are for an increase over the previous year. The primary basis for the expected rise of possibly 30 to 50 million bushels is the increased import requirements of Europe and Asia. Crop conditions in most of the coun tries of Europe, especially France, Spain and Italy, are less favorable than last year. Although larger crops are forecast for Asia, the usual large import requirements exist in India and Pakistan. As a result, a substantial increase in exports from North America may be expected. Excerpt from Competition for World Wheat Markets and U. S. Exports World wheat trade volume has fluctuated between wide extremes in recent years, prompting considerable interest by producers, grain traders, and other segments of the public. For a brief period in the mid-1960's, concern centered on the possibilities of food shortages and mass starvation in parts of the world. Beneath the surface of the wide changes in world import needs, there has been a continued struggle among the major wheat exporting countries as they have tried to maintain or improve their positions in world markets. This struggle goes on at times of oversupply as well as during periods of shortage. Analysis shows that some significant changes in the relative positions of the different suppliers have occurred in recent years. These changes are especially important because they tend to set the pattern for future years. It is the purpose of this report to review these changes; to survey the current general competitive situation in world wheat markets, with a particular view toward short-term us. Export prospects; and to serve as a base or reference point from which future competitive developments and shifts in wheat trade patterns can be evaluated. A number of graphic illustrations are included, which provide a quick description of certain key elements in the world wheat situation. In addition, several tables have been developed which focus particularly upon the supply patterns that surround the various segments of the world wheat market. This report is the first in a proposed series of periodic reviews, each of which, at annual or semiannual intervals, will update the tabular material contained in this first report, provide a current analysis of short-term u.s. Wheat export prospects, and present such supplemental information on supplies, prices, or other competitive developments as may be of current interest. Excerpt from The Wheat Situation During the 192m 33 period, when world supplies were increasing, world prices were declining, reaching the low point as supplies reached the high.point. From the spring of 1933 to the summer of 1937, world prices moved steadily upward. Reflecting higher world commodity price levels, four successive below ayerage harvests in North America, and the short Southern Hemisphere crop. In 1936 - 37 wheat prices advanced sharply as a result of increased demand and the smallest supplies in recent years. Then, during the l937é38 selling season, wheat prices declined generally, with somewhat larger supplies, uncertain prospects for world business activity, and weakness in the general price level.
