Excerpt from World-Wide Bible Study The object of this book is threefold: First, to show the reasons for the world-wide interest in the Bible; second, to point out how people may become interested in the Bible; third, to reveal the modern opportunity of the Bible, in relation to the state, the school, the home, and the church. Particular attention is given to the preparation and the training of Bible teachers, because of the wide-spread need of efficient leadership in Bible study. The author wishes to express his appreciation and indebtedness to The Sunday School Times for permission to publish a number of articles which have appeared in the Times. He wishes also to thank The Christian Herald for like permission to include two or three articles published in that paper. Excerpt from Bible Studies From the Old and New Testaments: Covering the International Sunday-School Lessons for 1892 If this volume lacks the savor of the library, the author trusts that it will not be found deficient in the Spirit of truth and light which certainly has been much present in his mind and heart. He sends it forth (the fifth in the series) with the prayer that it may prove both a help and a blessing to his readers, as the preparation of it has been to him. In the preface to the last volume the author ventured to ask the prayers of his readers for the presence and blessing of the Spirit of God upon his evangelistic labors in this land, then in prospect. He would repeat that request, now that he is in the land preaching and teaching the Gospel of Christ, both to nominal Christians and heathen. Excerpt from Bible Studies: I. Studies in the Pentateuch; II. Studies in the Life of Christ; The International Sunday-School Lessons for 1894 With this volume of Bible Studies a new series begins. It is the plan of these Studies to cover substantially the whole Bible in the course of seven years. The measure of favor with which both the American and British Christian public have received the preceding volumes warrants the beginning of another series. There is nothing new for the author to say by way of preface, except to cordially introduce his new publishers, Messrs. Fleming H. Revell Company, whose well-known firm is a guarantee for the publisher's department. The volumes as they may successively appear will come to their readers in their Old typographical dress, and the general plan of the Studies has been unchanged. In this volume there are several reprints from preceding ones, inasmuch as the new series in part overlaps the last series. This the author trusts will be no blemish on the present volume. Excerpt from Bible Studies of the Sabbath Question Advancing knowledge in the fields of physical and mental science, and of history, has greatly changed and enlarged our conceptions of God, man, and the universe Through our increasing knowledge of ancient peoples and religions we have been led to look upon all the great religions of the world as signs that men everywhere have been seeking after God, who met them on the highest level of their thought and desire. But as the Christian Scriptures, religion, and ethics, claim to be the true and the best, they must stand the test of history, experience, and reason. Industrial progress, new social conditions, and closer international relations, are the wonder, of our times, and must be reckoned with by us who believe in the final triumph of the religion and morals of the kingdom of Jesus Christ our Lord. Excerpt from Christ's Plan of Salvation: A Bible Study But when the fullness of time had come for the one great sacrificial atonement which had been shadowed forth in the law and proclaimed in the lofty imagery of the prophetic poets, the Christ made his advent, and by his obla tion of himself once ofiered, made a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world. By this sacrifice so ample, Christ did away with the ofierings and rites which were a necessary part of a system of salvation works, and inaugurated the reign of salvation by faith. Excerpt from The Bible School Book Giving an Easy Plan of Studying the Bible as a Whole: For Old and Young Greeting: Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Our Principle: People should know the Bible as they know their school books. To learn it so they must study and recite the whole book, as other books. Rule: Let us have first a clear idea of the general aim of each book or part, and then a close study of the details. Thus we shall see the tendency of each step in our progress, and also see the symmetry and unity of the whole. Excerpt from Bible Studies: For Normal Classes, Assemblies, Bible Students, and Sunday-School Teachers In 1884 an association was formed with the above title, composed of assembly conductors and normal-class instructors, representing nearly all the Sunday-school Assemblies in the United States and Canada, having for its purpose to bring the normal work throughout the entire country to a common standard, with a series of lessons following the line of the International Normal Committee. The Assembly Normal Union proposes to furnish to Sunday-school teachers, to those who may become teachers, and to Bible students, direction in study which shall aid in preparation for Sunday-school work. It presents to the student a course of study, occupying two years, in the two lines of Bible knowledge and Sunday-school work; outline lessons and text-books, which may be used either in classes or individual study; questions and suggestions, to guide the student; examinations, to be conducted either by correspondence or at various Sunday-school Assemblies; certificates for partial courses, and the diploma of the Union on the completion of the full course. The studies for the first year include twelve lessons on the Bible and twelve on the Sunday-school, issued in a volume similar to this. The studies for the second year include the lessons in this volume, and the reading of the following books: The Progress of Doctrine in the New Testament, by T. D. Bernard, M.A.; The Primer of Christian Evidence, by R. A. Redford, M.A.; The Seven Laws of Teaching, by J. M. Gregory, LL.D.
