In the mid-twentieth century the digital revolution began with the introduction of the first electronic computers, which were first introduced into companies and in the state bodies then they spread strongly in the private houses as personal computers; later all these computers were connected to each other by a global telecommunication network called Internet, which had a massive development at the end of the century becoming the backbone of the worldwide information circulation. At the beginning of the 21st century the digital revolution was completed and the information of any kind (texts, images, video clips and TV broadcasts, music and songs, WEB pages) started to be recorded and disseminated in digital form rather than with a traditional media (paper, film, magnetic tape), with a displacement that engaged all human activities of any type, both collective and individual. While the development of digital technology continue at an accelerated pace the problem of information retention begin to arise, what was previously mainly entrusted to printing on paper and now is in abandonment phase: printed records are increasingly transformed into digital format and the new information is generated directly in electronic form. But while a book or a letter could be read directly even centuries after their writing, digital information has a short life because of the same technological development, that makes quickly obsolete any recording by irreversibly mutating both its hardware and reading software; other recordings arethen volatile by their very nature, such as e-mails or WEB pages, even if they could host information that could be of value in the future. Moreover digital recordings are carried out in a great variety of different formats, sometimes incompatible with each other or subject themselves to obsolescence, thus unnecessarily complicating the task of preserving their content. Most part of human culture, gradually poured into electronic form, is now jeopardized, and we risk of delivering to posterity a world without history: this book describes the current situation and what is sought to do to remedy the danger.

Today the development of digital technology continues at an accelerated pace, but the problem of information retention arises, which previously was mainly entrusted to paper printing. But while a book or letter can be read immediately even centuries after their writing if they have resisted time, digital information still has a short life, even in the absence of the deterioration of the media used: this due to the same technological development, which quickly makes any recording obsolete by irreversibly changing both the hardware and the reading software. Other registrations are also volatile by their very nature, such as emails or web pages, although they may host information that may have value in the future. The problem is particularly relevant in this century precisely because we are at the initial stages of a new and important need, but we are not yet equipped to deal with it and we are not sufficiently aware of it. The past century has been baptized "the short century", but our present century risks being known by posterity as the "shortest century", precisely because they will not have much information about us. Preserving digital documents for their future use has not only a mere historiographical purpose, but also a concrete and irreplaceable value for future generations. Because if we don't keep the data, we can't reuse them. They are a kind of renewable resource, whose real value is in their reuse. So it's important to be at least aware of this problem, which the book tries to answer.

WOW - The 20's have become a decade of. Climate Change and a Global Pandemic, what more has this decade got for humanity? Maybe humanity can again take control of its destiny with nature.. Today, there are indications that humanity may finally be starting to stop and review our past, perhaps the Pandemic was the reminder that humanity needed. The world is starting to accept that Climate Change and Sustainability are real issues and need to be addressed and incorporated into all of our normal lives. What this realisation has failed to understand is that humanity has had this experience in the past. Why didn't humanity learn the lessons? Perhaps, we need to appreciate every day, that much of what we do today is founded on our collective past. The past is our foundation for our present lives and for OUR combined futures. To assess where we are now and where we can be in the future, we must reflect and understand our environment. We live in our environment which our ancestors understood how it all interacts and achieves a balance. They understood that without respect and balance for the environment, life was difficult. Some will say that our lessons were given to us by the gods, but in reality, it does not matter where the lessons came from, its how humanity has understood the teachings / lessons and how they have been passed down through the generations so that it continues to improve our collective lives. We all need to appreciate that we are the products of generations and past influences. There also needs to be an appreciation of the obvious facts, not all our foundations were always "positive" but rather a mix which include "negative" aspects of all history and it's the combination of the Positives and the Negatives AND how we deal with them, that mould are current lives. Since the dawn of humanity, there has been - by necessity - a bond between humans and nature, and without an understanding of nature, the ancients would not have survived. The "Past Influences - Ancient Lessons" are everywhere in our world, but are they understood or "ignored"? When we stop and look at those traces, there is an unquestionable acknowledgement of what they did and the impact they have had on every aspect of our life, including: - culture and heritage - language - planning & architecture - agriculture -diet & wellness - education & skills development - housing - commerce These are all aspects of sustainability - were they practicing sustainability in the past and we are just rediscovering their innovation? Whilst the world now seems to be awakening to the reality that sustainability is perhaps the biggest single factor affecting global economies, environmental survival management, and human development, there still remains a lot of resistance to change. Unfortunately, 2020 bought the world, the global pandemic "Covid19" and the BLM "Black Lives Matter" movement which have created unrest, uncertainty, disruption, but has it happened before? A reminder that Nature has been showing us Sustainability for centuries - all we needed to do was look and learn. The Past has influenced our present, and together they will aid in establishing our pathway to the future. Hopefully this book will help to reawaken the memories of what has been and enable an understanding that if we work together (including with nature), we can pass on to the next generation a global home that is still in reasonable condition. Our learnings were a gift from our past. Our next generation is learning from us. Together humanity needs to get together and move forward. Collectively, our past has given us lessons and learning that will assist us. Our past is our DNA. Our present will be the next generations "PAST". They are learning from us - so lets learn from our past NOW.
