When Gary Jackson, a bright academic student, suffers life changing injuries in a road traffic accident, his world begins to unravel. Having taught himself to lucid dream, he now spends considerable time in bed, living out fantasies in his own mind that he could never experience in the waking world. However, when a relative with dementia claims to have witnessed a murder he committed in a dream, Gary starts to question the nature of reality, and wonders if his actions in the dream world have real life consequences.Meanwhile, in another place, Physics student Gary Jackson finds himself in prison for a murder he has no memory of committing. Can the dreamer help the student get acquitted for a murder everyone saw him commit? Or will Gary spend his life in prison for someone else's crime?

Puts the emphasis on conceptual questions: Why is there no such thing as absolute motion? What is the physical meaning of relativity of simultaneity? But, the most important question that is addressed in this book is "what is the nature of spacetime?" or, equivalently, "what is the dimensionality of the world at the macroscopic level?" Develops answers to these questions via a thorough analysis of relativistic effects and explicitly asking whether the objects involved in those effects are three-dimensional or four-dimensional. Discusses the implication of the result (this analysis clearly shows that if the world and the physical objects were three-dimensional, none of the kinematic relativistic effects and the experimental evidence supporting them would be possible) for physics, philosophy, and our entire world view are discussed.

For many years, the development of large-scale quantitative social science was hindered by a lack of data. Traditional methods of data collection like surveys were very useful, but were limited. The situation has of course changed with the development of computing and information communication technology, and we now live in a world of data deluge, where the question has become how to extract important information from the plethora of data that can be accessed. Big Data has made it possible to study societal questions which were once impossible to deal with, but new tools and new multidisciplinary approaches are required. Physicists, together with economists, sociologists, computer scientists, etc. have played an important role in their development. This book presents the 9 lectures delivered at the CCIII Summer Course Computational Social Science and Complex Systems, held as part of the International School of Physics Enrico Fermi in Varenna, Italy, from 16-21 July 2018. The course had the aim of presenting some of the recent developments in the interdisciplinary fields of computational social science and econophysics to PhD students and young researchers, with lectures focused on recent problems investigated in computational social science. Addressing some of the basic questions and many of the subtleties of the emerging field of computational social science, the book will be of interest to students, researchers and advanced research professionals alike.

From Illusions To Reality written by Vesselin Petkov and has been published by Minkowski Institute Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-08 with Science categories.

The greatest mystery in the world is its very existence. In our intellectual development, we all reach a turning point when we start asking the perennial existential questions: "What is the world?"; "What am I?"; "What is the meaning of the existence of the world and myself?". As the German philosopher Schopenhauer put it: "The lower a man stands in intellectual respects the less of a riddle does existence seem to him... but, the clearer his consciousness becomes the more the problem grasps him in its greatness." This book explores what fundamental physics tells us about the physical world and how the scientific picture of what exists often differs disturbingly from the "common sense" view based on the way our senses reflect the world. Centuries-old illusions are identified by showing that they contradict experimentally-confirmed results of modern physics, which clears the way toward deeper understanding of reality. The greatest illusion that the world exists only at the present moment of time has been realized by many great thinkers, but so far the human race has been unable to free itself from it, prompting Einstein to write this: "the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion." Getting rid of such stubbornly persistent illusions by open-mindedly examining the implications of modern physics for the physical world can help us rise above the fog of everyday life and see Nature the way she herself is.

This textbook introduces the special theory of relativity at a level which is accessible to undergraduate students and even high school students with a strong foundation in algebra. The presentation emphasizes clean algebraic and geometrical methods, visualized with plenty of illustrations, resulting in a textbook that is modern and serious yet accessible. Replete with many solved exercises and copious spacetime diagrams, this book will help students develop relativistic intuition when encountering the subject for the first time. The emphasis on geometric methods, combined with the pedagogically appealing k-calculus approach, makes this book ideal for a self-contained course on special relativity or as supplementary reading for modern physics courses. It will also appeal to high schoolers with a strong math background who want to get ahead.

Have you always wanted to understand Quantum Theory, but was afraid of the math? Relax. I have written this book so that you can understand the theory without all the hard to understand equations and science speak. Once you understand quantum mechanics, you can use that knowledge to take control of your life. This book has three sections. It will teach you the science, and it will transform your life. The first section covers the science and a little history. It tells you how things work. The second section covers the philosophy. It tells you why it works that way. The third section covers magic. Because the science works the way it does, your mind is able to control your quantum reality. Take control of your life and reality. Let me tell you about Quantum Theory, and show you how to use it to make your life better. Buy a copy of The Layman's Guide To Quantum Reality and find out how to control your Reality!

This is a collection of some works of Polish philosophers and physicists on philosophical problems of time and spacetime. Without restricting the thematic scope of the papers, the issue conceming objectivity of time flow runs as a uniting thread through most of them. Partly it is discussed directIy, and partly the authors focus on themes which are of paramount importance for one's attitude to that question. In the first six papers the authors deal with their topics against the background of contemporary physics, its theories, its difficulties and discussed conjectures. For the paper of S. Snihur that background is provided by everyday worId-outlook, and the author discusses the problem of existence and character of the future in the light of basic principles of cIassical logic. The paper of A. P61tawski, about the views of the outstanding polish philosopher Roman Ingarden, enriches the thematic scope of the coIIection introducing into it some questions from philosophical anthropology and ethics. JERZY GOLOSZ MOTION, SPACE, TIME*. Abstract. The paper discusses the properties of spacetime we study by analyzing the phenomenon of motion. Of special interest are the spacetime symmetries. the spacetime structures and the ontological status of spacetime. These problems are considered on the grounds of the c1assical theories of motion contained in Newtonian physics, special and general theory of relativity. The controversy between an absolute and a relational conception of motion and its ontological implications are also analyzed.

The Cosmic Web written by J. Richard Gott and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-26 with Science categories.

A gripping first-person account of how scientists came to understand our universe's mysterious structure J. Richard Gott was among the first cosmologists to propose that the structure of our universe is like a sponge made up of clusters of galaxies intricately connected by filaments of galaxies—a magnificent structure now called the "cosmic web" and mapped extensively by teams of astronomers. Here is his gripping insider's account of how a generation of undaunted theorists and observers solved the mystery of the architecture of our cosmos. The Cosmic Web begins with modern pioneers of extragalactic astronomy, such as Edwin Hubble and Fritz Zwicky. It goes on to describe how, during the Cold War, the American school of cosmology favored a model of the universe where galaxies resided in isolated clusters, whereas the Soviet school favored a honeycomb pattern of galaxies punctuated by giant, isolated voids. Gott tells the stories of how his own path to a solution began with a high-school science project when he was eighteen, and how he and astronomer Mario Jurič measured the Sloan Great Wall of Galaxies, a filament of galaxies that, at 1.37 billion light-years in length, is one of the largest structures in the universe. Drawing on Gott’s own experiences working at the frontiers of science with many of today’s leading cosmologists, The Cosmic Web shows how ambitious telescope surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey are transforming our understanding of the cosmos, and how the cosmic web holds vital clues to the origins of the universe and the next trillion years that lie ahead.
