It should be mentioned that with spur gears, when stock cutters are used, the diameters and center distances must be such as go with whole numbers of teeth. The property of spiral gears by which any center distance may be accommo dated is therefore one which is not shared by spur gears. Should those sections of this book which relate to unchanged center distances be omitted, its remain ing solutions would be as complete as is possible with spur gears. This subject has often been presented in so theoretical a manner that many have assumed it to be very difficult to master. It is possible, however, to present the principles of design and calculation of spiral and worm gearing in such a way that they can be readily under stood without resorting to a highly theoretical treatment; and in preparing this book, the first consideration on the part of the editor has therefore been to treat the subject in such'a way as to meet the practical requirementsof the machine-building trade.
