By the mid-second century Christian writers were engaging in debates with educated audiences from non-Jewish Graeco-Roman cultural backgrounds. A remarkable feature of some of the texts from this period is how extensively they refer to the Jewish scriptures, even though those scriptures were unfamiliar to non-Jewish Graeco-Romans. In Worshipping a Crucified Man, Jeremy Hudson explores for the first time why this should have been so by examining three works by Christian converts originally educated in Graeco-Roman traditions: Justin Martyr’s First Apology, Tatian’s Oratio and Theophilus of Antioch’s Ad Autolycum. Hudson considers their literary strategies, their use of quotations and allusions and how they present the Jewish scriptures; all against the background of the Graeco-Roman literary culture familiar to both authors and audiences. The scriptures are presented as a critically defining feature of Christianity, instrumental in shaping the way the new religion presented itself, as it strove to engage with, and challenge, the cultural traditions of the Graeco-Roman world.

This book presents two new proposals regarding Paul's letter to the Galatians. First, it demonstrates an entirely new chiastic structure embracing the entire letter, based on strict linguistic and textual criteria rather than on conceptual or theological themes. This chiastic structure accords with the view that Galatians was originally performed orally in a setting of communal worship. Secondly, it offers a new proposal for a key theme that runs throughout Galatians, as expressed by the subtitle of this book-"Worship for Life by Faith in the Crucified and Risen Lord." It considers "worship" to be a comprehensive concept that includes liturgical, cultic, or ritual worship as well as the moral behavior that is to complement it as ethical worship in accord with the biblical tradition. "Life" refers both to the present way of living as well as to future eternal life. "Faith" refers to the acceptance of divine grace available to the believer because of the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

After salvation, man must be made to detest with all his being the sin nature within him. When he does he will kill it (Romans 6:6). "How shall we, who are dead to sin, live any longer in it?" (Romans 6:2). When he kills it, he allows Christ to be fully formed in him and is fit then to walk out the rest of his life on earth in single-minded devotion to Christ, longing for the moment he will be forever with Him in glory. The overemphasis for the importance of the crucifixion or death of Jesus on the cross was not put in place until the era of Constantine. Historically, the issue of whether Jesus was or was not on the cross and crucified was settled around 148 AC according the Roman church's satisfaction. In addition, the idea of Jesus being crucified was believed by certain Jewish-Christian sects for various reasons from the time of the actual crucifixion event. Furthermore, the declaration that Jesus rose from the dead was bound to cause trouble to those who lacked a deep comprehension in religious matters. The reasons for this are varied. It must not be forgotten, however, that during many decades the forming 'church' and its multitudinous sects were undergoing excruciating turmoil within and outside its ranks and this caused a lot of confusion to enter into the mix. Before the actual formation of Christianity, as a distinct religious movement, several ideas were floating around and one of them was that Jesus was not of the 'flesh' but a spiritual being. To counteract that idea, the notion that Jesus was actually crucified took concrete shape as if to prove his real existence and that he was not just an 'angelic' figure but a real person. The truth concerning the crucifixion event is astounding but only when an honest approach to all of the scriptures and a truthful look at history is applied. That is the truth but acceptance of this truth is quite another matter indeed!

The first part describes the nature and significance of the worship offered by Israel in the Old Testament sacrifices, especially those which were clearly "types" of the unique sacrifice of the Cross in which all find their fulfilment. Among those discussed are the sacrifice of Abel, that of Noe, and Abraham's which is seen as an inward sacrifice fully accomplished. Later sacrifices under the law include the Pasch, which acknowledges the majesty of the true God to the pagans, and the sacrifice of the Seven Brothers and their Mother recounted in Machabees. Part two surveys the sacrifice of our Lord upon the Cross in which filial worship, reparation and satisfaction are offered to the Father, and the third part examines the worship we offer to God in the light of Christ crucified.
