Terminologies present various challenges to their inventors and to their users, ranging from epistemic adequacy over linguistic concerns to matters of strategy and group construction. With respect to historical terminologies, however, research has been dominated by linguistic approaches. Breaking new ground, Coming to Terms collects eleven articles that combine an interest in the history of knowledge, mostly ancient Greek, with research on scientific terminologies. They all share an interest in terminological practices, that is, questions such as how and when to coin a term and then what to do with it. Among the fields discussed are astronomy, the Roman surveyors, Aristotelian science, Renaissance and modern biology, contemporary medicine, ancient Chinese philosophy, 20th-century physics, and colonial linguistics. Confronting ancient with modern terminologies, the collection intends to test integrative interpretive approaches. Thus, the collection documents how rich ancient (and modern) terminologies are and shows that they are, beyond lexicography, worth being studied per se.

In contrastive linguistics of English and German, there is a tradition of accounting for contrasts with respect to grammar and, to a lesser extent, for lexis and phonetics. Moving on to discourse and text, there is a sizeable body of literature on cohesive patterns in English and German respectively - but very little in terms of a comparison. The latter, though, is of particular interest for language learners, translators and, of course, linguists and researchers in language technology. This book attempts to close this gap, based on a number of years of corpus-based study into variation and cohesion in the two languages. While there is an overall focus on language contrasts, it also investigates variation between different registers language-internally, and between written and spoken mode in particular. For each of the five major types of cohesion (co-reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunctive relations and lexical cohesion), overviews are given of contrasts in the system and of contrastive frequencies in texts. Results and methods presented in this book are thus relevant for language teaching, translation, language technology and corpus-based work on English and German generally.

Die 'Interformation' wird definiert als textstrategische Praxis, die den Grenzverkehr zwischen den Zeichenordnungen der Physik und der Literatur organisiert. Ausgangspunkt ist die Annahme, dass Physik und Literatur auf unterschiedlichen semio-logischen Feldern operieren. Der Bindestrich im Wort "semio-logisch" weist darauf hin, dass sich beide Felder unterschiedlicher Logiken der Verwendung von Zeichen bedienen. Untersucht werden zeichen- und erzähltheoretische Aspekte in Texten, in denen die theoretische Physik auf Verfahrensweisen der Literatur zurückgreift und diese für ihre Modellierungen heuristisch fruchtbar macht (Johannes Kepler, Albert Einstein, Kip Thorne). Andererseits werden verstehensrelevante physiktheoretische Aspekte in der Analyse jener literarischen Texte beleuchtet (E. T. A. Hoffmann, Durs Grünbein, Richard Powers, Dietmar Dath, Thomas Lehr), die auf Konzepte, Verfahren und Formrelationen der theoretischen Physik zurückgreifen. Mit diesem Ansatz der Interformation werden aus historischer Perspektive die Schwellenepochen um 1600, um 1800, um 1900 und um 2000 fokussiert. Die Arbeit folgt jedoch nicht der literarhistorischen Chronologie, sondern konzentriert sich auf bestimmte Problemkomplexe der Physik in den Bereichen der Astronomie, der Optik, der speziellen und allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie, der Theoretischen Astrophysik sowie der Quantenfeldtheorie, die alle jeweils in der kulturellen Semantik bestimmter Epochen historisch virulent werden.
