Young Wren had been hammered out of shape more often than she could remember. Fourteen was too young to be thrown headlong into the underbelly of a city that hit so hard and cared so little, but the city was all she knew. At night she would dream of unimaginable power, but every time she awoke, she felt weaker, and she bucked against that weakness like a rat in a cage.In Book 1 of the Wren Stories, see a cold, desperate world through the eyes of a girl filled with fire. Follow Wren's shaking steps through a city buffeted by terror, and learn how the strongest steel can only be shaped by the hardest hammer blows.Wren flies the nest only to be caged, and flees her cage to find that clipped wings can regrow, and a heart bent out of shape can be reforged. She adapts to find safety in the shadows that once scared her, sees hope bloom in a place she thought was dead, and learns in the hardest way possible that the only way to survive in the city is to stay low, think fast, and strike first.

Hunting The Wren written by Elizabeth Atwood Lawrence and has been published by Univ. of Tennessee Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Nature categories.

A unique interdisciplinary study, this book examines the British and European tradition of the wren hunt, in which a bird ordinarily revered and protected for most of the year was killed around the time of the annual solstice. In focusing on this ancient ritual, Elizabeth Atwood Lawrence draws on her training in cultural anthropology and biology to cast a fresh light on the complexities of human-animal relationships.Following an introductory chapter on animal symbolism, Lawrence proceeds in subsequent chapters to describe the wren both as a biological entity and as the subject of numerous tales and legends, to delineate the details of the wren hunt ceremony and the various meanings ascribed to it, and, finally, to relate the ceremony to important contemporary issues in human-animal interactions and current attitudes toward the living environment. Whereas most other studies tend to concentrate solely on human perceptions of animals and fail to include the animal's role in the relationship, Lawrence's approach shows how the participation of both animal and human determines the symbolic status of the animal -- which in turn influences the treatment of that animal within a particular society. At a time when human destructiveness toward nature has reached tragic proportions, Lawrence contends, it is critical that we understand the processes by which certain cultural beliefs, in combination with observations about the natural history of a particular animal, result in emotional and mental responses that may ultimately determine the fate of that species. The author argues persuasively that the wren hunt -- with its ancient roots, associated beliefs, and complex meanings in thepreindustrialized world -- still has much to teach us.

Butterflies And Wrens written by Robert Smith and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-12 with Fiction categories.

Robert Smith’s first book entitled My Bunny Rabbit Adventures features his father’s repertoire of 1960s bedtime stories about the bunnies who lived in the woods next door. One of the bunnies from those original stories called Hector is featured in this subsequent book, which is a novel about Hector’s life and times from the age of two when he first met Robert, the storyteller, to when his first child reaches this impressionable age. It therefore covers Hector’s circle of life. You will discover how Hector grew up, what happened to him, what he became, how he coped with the good and bad things that came his way, what he learned from his experiences and from those of others, and finally, how he matured into a grown-up rabbit with a family of his own. The reader will learn about, and gain a better understanding of both their and other peoples’ feelings, challenges, and fears and how to deal with them and how to respect and treat others. The novel includes some interesting true stories and facts as part of the story line, which you may find interesting and useful and, hopefully, just utterly amazing too! This book is therefore an ideal first novel for children.

"The Arcane Order of Carpet Flyers! The Sublime Society of Scudders! Didn't you read the contract I sent you, Miss Drake?" Sure, Renny had read it. Obviously it was some kind of joke. And this guy with the flakes of pie crust in his beard, he is obviously some kind of whacko. But no. Parnell Florian is no whacko - and Maysa, the ancient silk-brocade carpet now rolled up under her bed, is no joke. It really can fly, and Renny's life just got a whole lot more interesting. And when she meets the other members of the Order - her flock - life gets more interesting still. Most interesting of all is the boy called Stonechat, who seems to find her pretty interesting as well. But when a vengeful rug-rider called Mistral kidnaps Parnell and steals the all-important Orb of Descrying, Renny and the ragtag flock of misfits must ride to the rescue - or else face an adversary who can control their very dreams. One by one, all the people Renny has come to care about fall into Mistral's hands, and she must find courage and ingenuity she never knew she had. A modern day fantasy that Publisher's Weekly called: "A great combination of fantasy, adventure, and romance...an engaging and enjoyable read," The Flight of the Wren is, at its core, a story of family. Estranged from her mentally-ill mother, bounced from one foster home to another, Renny feels no connection to anyone in her life. In her darkest moments she fears that she will never really care about anyone...only to find out that having someone you really care about can be the scariest thing of all. And that sometimes the hardest part about flying is just learning to hang on.

This is the first comprehensive guide to these closely related families. The book covers all 75 wrens, 34 thrashers and 5 dippers, almost all of which are New World species. The wrens (Troglodytidae) in particular display great diversity, occupying almost every kind of habitat in the Americas. The family probably originates in Central America where the greatest number of species is to be found. The thrashers (Mimidae) include the mockingbirds, catbirds and tremblers. The dippers (Cinclidae) are river specialists although, unusually, they exhibit no obvious features for an aquatic existence.

Morse Code Wrens Of Station X written by Anne Glyn-Jones and has been published by Andrews UK Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-31 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Anne Glyn-Jones opens up the secret world of the interceptors of German Morse Code signals during World War II. Leaving her girls' boarding school with romantic ideas about joining the navy as a Wren, Anne had no idea that she would be working for the mysterious 'Station X', which we now know to be Bletchley Park. Round the clock shifts, bed bugs, rats and poor diet took its toll, as well as the ongoing lack of recognition from the Navy hierarchy. Morse Code Wrens of Station X is a very personal memoir of a young woman's experiences of war time service, as well as providing fascinating insights into the daily realities of the battle for military intelligence superiority.
