This collection explores the ways in which women in academia from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds mediate the negotiation of linguistic discrimination and linguistic diversity in higher education, using autoethnography to make visible their lived experiences. The volume shows how women in academia from CaLD backgrounds, particularly those living or working in the Global South, draw on their multivalent complex linguistic backgrounds and cultural repertoires to cope with, and manage, linguistic and systemic gender discrimination. In adopting authoethnography as its key methodology, the book encourages these academics to ‘write themselves’ beyond the conventions from which women in academia have traditionally been forced to speak and write. The collection features perspectives from women across geographic contexts, sub-fields and levels of experience whose stories are not often told, putting at the fore their narratives, lived experiences and career trajectories in mediating issues around power, ideology, language policy, social justice, teaching and learning, and identity construction. In so doing, the book challenges the wider field to expand the borders of discussions on linguistic discrimination and higher education institutions to critically engage with these issues. This book will be of interest to scholars in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics and cultural studies.

This edited collection sees experts across a wide range of academic fields turn their attention to all things Taylor Swift. From looking at how being part of Swift’s fandom helps fans gain skills for other areas of their life, to Swift’s inspiration for drag persona Taylor Sheesh in the Philippines, to whether Swift’s lyrics suggest she endorses the use of public transport, this book covers it all. This book contributes to the rising area of Swift Studies, with an introductory explanation of how biases in the academy regarding popular culture, pop music as a genre, and femininities, have traditionally worked against a focus on Swift. The collection is divided into five sections which cover: Swift fans (“Swifties”) and fandom; Swift in relation to gender, femininity, and feminism; the limits of Swift in terms of Whiteness and colonialism; queer engagements with Swift; and Swift’s impact on/relation to the music industry, cities, and communities. The chapters in the collection do not necessarily look at Swift the individual person, but rather, Swift the phenomenon. This book will be useful for teachers and students across an array of disciplines including but not limited to Cultural Studies, Media and Communications, Sport Studies, History, Gender and Sexuality Studies, English and Literature, Law, Sociology, Indigenous Studies, Urban Planning, Geography, and Business Studies. This collection prioritises voices from the Asia-Pacific, offering an important contribution to Swift Studies. This book has something for everyone, from the Swift fan to the Swift skeptic.

This book explores the lives of prominent expatriates working in varying fields and aims to understand why they were drawn to Indonesia and examines their diverse, but valuable contributions to Indonesia and its way of life. In doing so, it will facilitate a better understanding for readers in the East and the West regarding the contributions of prominent expatriates to Indonesia and their feelings towards a country which in many cases, may have become their “home.” Dragonflies which have been described as fantastic flyers, darting, twisting, turning and transforming, are just like expatriates who have contributed to Indonesia in a variety of fields. Like dragonflies, they are also reminders that we can reflect light in powerful ways. They contribute to others by helping them to see through their misinterpreted illusions and allowing their own light to shine in a new vision, like academics, artists, writers or entrepreneurs. *** “Much of Indonesia outside of Jakarta and other major cities, we found incredibly beautiful. The greatest attraction of the country was the pleasure of working with Indonesians who accepted me as a colleague, rather than a dangerous foreigner, who had to be kept at a distance. Over time, both my wife and myself became greatly attached to Indonesia, both personally and professionally.” -Gustav Papanek- “Living in Indonesia is very different to living in Australia. It has changed from the turbulent situation during the 1980s and 1990s, and is now much more open and liberal. For most foreigners living and working in Indonesia, it takes time and effort to develop the skills and understanding, that best enable them to operate in Indonesia. Personally, I have always found most Indonesians very welcoming.” -David Hill- “I have acquired an enriched understanding of another culture. I possess another language and this opens up the mind immeasurably. rough speaking the language, wI can get much closer to people and be a part of the decision making process. I am more relaxed about life in general, through my Indonesian experiences.” -David Reeve- “I can sympathise with the idea of being a ‘global citizen’, but believe that those with experiences of other cultures must be able to share these experiences and insights with members of their own culture. Indonesia gains most value from me not when I think like an Indonesian, but when I act like an Australian who knows and respects Indonesian culture and can present diff erent and distinct perspectives on it: to Australians and Indonesians alike.” -Harry Aveling-

This book introduces readers to a powerful method for cross-cultural due diligence in mergers and organizational collaborations. It employs the context of joint ventures between local communities and companies in the domain of hospitality in emerging tourism destinations. The book first analyzes the impact of cultural diversity in mergers between local communities and the private sector, revealing the characteristics and functions of culture and paying specific attention to the roles of organizational and community cultures in hospitality. In two subsequent methodological chapters the book presents a theoretical framework for cultural due diligence and identifies the principal actors, technical aspects and core principles. On the basis of a separate case study from northern Thailand, the book provides an example of cultural context analysis and presents the findings and results. In a concluding chapter the book presents an outlook on further research and development in this field.
