Professor Powell ties the origin and nature of archaic Greek literature to the special technology of Greek alphabetic writing. In building his model he presents chapters on specialized topics - text, orality, myth, literacy, tradition and memorization - and then shows how such special topics relate to larger issues of cultural transmission from East to West. Several chapters are devoted to the theory and history of writing, its definition and general nature as well as such individual developments as semasiography and logosyllabography, Chinese writing and the West Semitic family of syllabaries. He shows how the Greek alphabet put an end to the multiliteralism of Eastern traditions of writing, and how the recording of Homer and other early epic poetry cannot be separated from the alphabetic revolution. Finally, he explains how the creation of Greek alphabetic texts demoticized Greek myth and encouraged many free creations of new myths based on Eastern images.

There are several good histories of Greek literature of various shapes and sizes, but the purpose of this book is not simply to consider the literature of ancient Greece as an isolated subject, treating each of the literary modes - epic, lyric, drama, history, philosophy, and rhetoric - in terms of its own evolution. Instead, Robert Flaceliere provides a Greek history that deals with all the important works of Hellenic literature that are still of interest to contemporary readers; and he does this in chronological order with an accurate account of their historical background.Flaceliere follows the history of Greece down through the centuries as the writer records it. He describes the political atmosphere in the nation and the advances in the other arts that influenced literature. The author understands Sappho's rhapsodies; girlish love in the context of the acceptance of homosexuality in that era. He sympathizes with the unrequited passion of the penniless Archilochos. He appreciates Pindar's pacifist tendencies, Herodotus' upright insistence on truth, and Euripides' doubts about the existence of the gods. For the classical centuries, so rich in talent and genius, the author follows the successive generations systematically so as to distinguish the special features of each, what it owes to the preceding generation and how it paves the way for the next.Since this is a literary history, attention is mainly focused on the writers and their works, but by displaying these in their political, social, artistic and scientific setting, Flaceliere gives a better understanding of the production and significance of these wonderful achievements of the human spirit. Due to the wide range of material presented, "A Literary History of Greece" can be used as a reference book as well as for enjoyment reading.

Excerpt from History of the Literature of Ancient Greece: To the Period of Isocrates When K. O. Müller died in 1840, the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, for which I was translating the History of Greek Literature from the authors manuscript, commissioned me to complete the work, and a few pages of my continuation had been published, when the Society came to an end. From that time until rather less than three years ago, I heard no more of the book; but the present publishers, having become possessed of the copyright, have requested me to complete my original undertaking, and the following pages are the result. In thus accepting a task, perhaps the most laborious, in proportion to its extent, that I could have undertaken, I have been induced by two motives: first, a wish to fulfil an obligation to the public, and to perform a promised duty to the memory of a distinguished scholar; secondly, a conviction that this book, if completed with tolerable success, would furnish an aid to the classical student which has not been and is not likely to be superseded. With regard to the first of these motives, I am quite aware that there are many who feel a respect for the memory of K. O. Muller, and who wish that his last and not least important work should be completed according to his plan, and that among these there are some who are at least as competent as I can pretend to be to write a history of Greek literature. But, on the other hand, I have every reason to believe that the public announcement of the fact, that one of the translators had been appointed to continue the work by the Society, for which Muller himself was writing it, must have deterred his friends in Germany and England from attempting to perform the same good office. Excerpt from A Short History of Greek Literature From Homer to Julian The writer of a survey of Greek literature so brief as this feels throughout the task the lack of elbow-room, and must always be acutely conscious of omissions. I have kept constantly in mind the reader who, though little or not at all acquainted with the classics, realizes that he cannot appreciate any other literature, least of all his own, unless he can relate its masterpieces to the types set, once for all, by the Greeks. He may safely ignore all but the best. But this book is intended, no less, for the student of Greek who, in his second or third year at college, will profit immensely by a rapid survey of the whole field of Greek literature. For him every part of that whole becomes significant, and for his sake the tribe of Euphorion or the declaimers must often usurp space that, if one followed the mere sense of proportion, is due to the creative writers. Of the prose writers, Julian's is the latest name formally treated, but, in order to include Musaeus and the later epic, I have carried down the sketch of Graeco-Roman poetry to the sixth century. In the matter of the spelling of names I have not striven for a consistency that scholars continue to abhor. A History of Ancient Greek Literature is an exceptional and comprehensive textbook of Europe's oldest civilization. The book covers the ancient Greek literature from the earliest texts until the time of the Byzantine Empire. It begins with the earliest surviving works of ancient Greek literature, the two epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey, set in an idealized archaic past today identified as having some relation to the Mycenaean era. Homer's epics as well as the Homeric Hymns and the two poems of Hesiod, Theogony and Works and Days, comprised the major foundations of the Greek literary tradition that would continue into the Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods. All above mentioned periods are presented in this book with a special emphasise on every particularly literary genre of ancient Greek literature - epic poetry, lyric poetry, drama, historiography and philosophy. Contents Homer Lesser Homeric Poems; Hesiod; Orpheus The Descendants of Homer, Hesiod, and Orpheus The Song The Beginnings of Prose Herodotus Philosophic and Political Literature to the Death of Socrates Thucydides The Drama Aeschylus Sophocles Euripides Comedy Plato Xenophon The 'Orators' Demosthenes and His Contemporaries The Later Literature, Alexandrian and Roman
