Beyond Fear written by Bruce Schneier and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-07-28 with Computers categories.

Many of us, especially since 9/11, have become personally concerned about issues of security, and this is no surprise. Security is near the top of government and corporate agendas around the globe. Security-related stories appear on the front page everyday. How well though, do any of us truly understand what achieving real security involves? In Beyond Fear, Bruce Schneier invites us to take a critical look at not just the threats to our security, but the ways in which we're encouraged to think about security by law enforcement agencies, businesses of all shapes and sizes, and our national governments and militaries. Schneier believes we all can and should be better security consumers, and that the trade-offs we make in the name of security - in terms of cash outlays, taxes, inconvenience, and diminished freedoms - should be part of an ongoing negotiation in our personal, professional, and civic lives, and the subject of an open and informed national discussion. With a well-deserved reputation for original and sometimes iconoclastic thought, Schneier has a lot to say that is provocative, counter-intuitive, and just plain good sense. He explains in detail, for example, why we need to design security systems that don't just work well, but fail well, and why secrecy on the part of government often undermines security. He also believes, for instance, that national ID cards are an exceptionally bad idea: technically unsound, and even destructive of security. And, contrary to a lot of current nay-sayers, he thinks online shopping is fundamentally safe, and that many of the new airline security measure (though by no means all) are actually quite effective. A skeptic of much that's promised by highly touted technologies like biometrics, Schneier is also a refreshingly positive, problem-solving force in the often self-dramatizing and fear-mongering world of security pundits. Schneier helps the reader to understand the issues at stake, and how to best come to one's own conclusions, including the vast infrastructure we already have in place, and the vaster systems--some useful, others useless or worse--that we're being asked to submit to and pay for. Bruce Schneier is the author of seven books, including Applied Cryptography (which Wired called "the one book the National Security Agency wanted never to be published") and Secrets and Lies (described in Fortune as "startlingly lively...¦[a] jewel box of little surprises you can actually use."). He is also Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Counterpane Internet Security, Inc., and publishes Crypto-Gram, one of the most widely read newsletters in the field of online security.

Beyond Fear written by Patrick O. Creary and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-20 with Religion categories.

When we are fearful, we reveal our hostility toward God. And though this matter of fear is often discussed, it remains amongst the least treated of our negative emotions. Our neglect to treat fear correctly may be due to the fact that it has a dual effect upon us. Primarily, fear is a part of our primitive survival apparatus, but it also serves to prevent us from attempting great feats; exploits which lie well within our capacity to achieve, if only we were able to defeat this foe of our aspirations. It is with the latter effect that this book is concerned. In Beyond Fear, the author, Patrick Creary, teaches us how to overcome fear, how to subdue it, and how to withstand all that would crush our indomitable human spirit. He squarely addresses the root cause of this foreboding emotion, tracing its genesis back to the very root of our spiritual insufficiencies.

Moving Beyond Fear To Gratitude written by Nancy H. Mitchell and has been published by WestBow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-06-02 with Religion categories.

Moving Beyond Fear to Gratitude takes the reader on a journey with a quiet, strong, humble man who trusted in the Lord throughout all his trials—including corticolbasal degeneration (CBD), a rare and debilitating brain disease—and his anxious wife who, as his caregiver, learned to lean on the Lord and to see that gratitude adds a sense of peace to the circumstances of life. Through her four years of journaling, Nancy paints a picture of CBD’s effects on both sufferer and caregiver. This book is intended, in part, to help families and caregivers recognize CBD symptoms. It’s primary purpose, however, is to show how the hard-earned knowledge Nancy gained through caring for her husband, coupled with his strong positive attitude and faith, helped her to better accept God’s sovereign control over life’s circumstances and deepened her faith beyond anything she could have possibly conceived. It’s her prayer that what she has shared in this book will help you to find that same acceptance and deeper faith in the midst of your own trial. Nancy reminds us that everyone is going through some type of trial. What matters is what we do with that trial to glorify God and to acknowledge that all that we are and have, we are and have by His grace and only by His grace.

On two remote islands off the coast of Maine, the local lobstermen have fought savagely for generations over the fishing rights to the ocean waters between them. Young Ruth Thomas is born into this feud, the daughter of one of the greediest lobstermen in Maine. Eighteen years old, as smart as a whip, and irredeemably unromantic, Ruth returns home from boarding school determined to throw her education overboard and join the 'stern-men'. As the feud escalates, she helps work the lobster boats, brushes up on her profanity, and eventually falls for a handsome young lobsterman. A funny, sparkling novel of unlikely friendships and family ties, Stern Men captures a feisty American spirit through this unforgettable heroine who is destined for greatness despite herself. Stern Men was a New York Times Notable Book.
