If space is important in the realm of imagination and a key theme in feminist theory, cross-cultural studies of social maps reveal that men and women's spatial experiences differ; women rarely control physical or social space directly. Positing the thesis that women's writing of Francophone Africa and the Caribbean offers important perspectives on the relationship of gender to space,Writing from the Hearth proposes close readings of Francophone women writers of Africa (Aoua KZita, Mariama B%, Ken Bugul, Calixthe Beyala, and Aminata Sow Fall) and the Caribbean (Marie Chauvet, Simon Schwarz-Bart, Maryse CondZ, and Edwidge Danticat). As critical readings of postcolonial African and Caribbean literature show that tropes of confinement appear frequently in female-authored texts_where home is often depicted as a place of alienation_this critical study examines ambiguities associated with domestic space as enclosure as it explores the relationship between the female protagonist and the inner and outer spaces of her world: domestic, imaginative, and public space. Writing from the Hearth probes the hypothesis that the female protagonist can move toward empowerment by entering public space from which she has been excluded by indigenous patriarchs and European colonizers and by establishing a new relationship to domestic space or securing a liberating alternative space within it. Flexible and multipurpose, alternative space is a place of possibilities that can function as a refuge for meditation, recollection, or fantasy, an antechamber for action, and a site of resistance and performance. Here, by telling the tale, writing the creative work, a woman can affirm her sense of self.

We all want to experience an awesome walk with Father God—not one orchestrated by the guidelines of others, but one led by the Holy Spirit. With that in mind, Delores Chavis shares a collection of essays, scriptures, and writing prompts that guide spiritual seekers to invite God into their reading and studies and ultimately develop a deeper relationship with Him. Chavis relies on over seventeen years of ministering others to provide personal ancedotes, lessons learned, and accompanying biblical passages that highlight her own walk with God and encourage others to study God’s word, reflect on their own lives and spiritual journeys, and then experience God in practical ways that exceed expectations. Included in her writings are scriptures to study and prompts that inspire self-reflection about the direction Father God has planned for all of us. In this collection of inspirational writings, a seasoned minister shares precious thoughts about her walk with God that invite spiritual seekers to study scripture while contemplating their own lives and walks. “... Twenty-One Writings from the Heart challenges us to experience God’s presence in everyday life where we work, live, or play.” —Chandra Moyer, Coach, Author, Speaker

It can be frustrating, demoralising even, to be too afraid or intimidated to express either in speech or in writing what is going on in one's mind. It's one thing to write enough to complete a class assignment or to please a teacher; it's another to really use and take ownership of one's language, and express oneself from one's heart. The main goal of From the Heart is to encourage just that. The exercises are designed to give students the opportunity to develop language skills while at the same time using their own, individual creative talents. The activities were selected with several goals in mind: To help students explore their own creativity in a supportive environment; To help them discover that inspiration for writing is everywhere; To build their confidence in voicing their own heartfelt ideas; To provide abundant opportunities to practice their newly acquired skills; To help them feel comfortable about getting -- and giving -- feedback that improves writing. As they achieve these goals, they will find themselves more confident and comfortable with their new language, producing texts that are much more interesting than standard classroom fare, and really writing from their hearts.
