The 17th on the Old Course at St. Andrews -- the Road Hole -- is arguably the most famous hole in golf. Surely, it has determined the fate of more golfers from around the world than any hole in golf anywhere. Consequently, it has collected more stories. There is the story of one caddie, for example, who walked in and left his bag and his golfer on the course because his player wouldn't hit the correct club; the golfer that the caddie abandoned...Francis Ouimet, the captain of the United States Walker Cup team. Every golfer who has played the Old Course has left a piece of himself at the Road Hole -- some more than others. Tommy Nakijima was in contention for the British Open one year until he found the infamous Road Hole Bunker, and ended up making a 13. Ever since, the bunker has been known as "The Sands of Nakijima". Professionals and amateurs alike -- Nicklaus, Palmer, Jones, among many other famous players -- have had to face the menacing hole over the years. The ones who tackled it successfully (Seve Ballesteros) went on to win. Those less successful (Tom Watson) lost. But all of them have a story about the Road Hole. Wry Stories at the Road Hole is another enjoyable book from Bobby Jones biographer, Sidney Matthew. It's hilarious, historical, and like all of Mr. Matthew's books, very thorough. That makes it the perfect book for both the beginning golfer and the expert.

Acclaim for The Immortal Bobby "Just when you think there is nothing new to be said or written on the subject of Bob Jones, Ron Rapoport comes along and proves that theory completely untrue. The Immortal Bobby is wonderfully reported and superbly written." --John Feinstein, author of A Good Walk Spoiled and Caddy for Life "The story of Bobby Jones's singular life is one of the most fascinating in sports history. Ron Rapoport's thoughtful, graceful style is well suited to telling that story." --Bob Costas, broadcaster, NBC Sports and HBO Sports "Beyond the grainy newsreels and the confetti falling on Broadway and Peachtree Street, there was an essential Bobby Jones, and Ron Rapoport reveals him splendidly in a portrait as graceful as the man. There's more here than Grand Slam 1930--the jangling nerves and self-doubt, the towering modesty in response to fame, the complexity of an Atlanta patrician, a life richly lived." --Gary M. Pomerantz, author of Where Peachtree Meets Sweet Auburn "The skills of writing and reporting that fans of Ron Rapoport, like me, have come to expect from him over the years--candor, thoughtfulness, insight, perspective, humor--are once again demonstrated and illuminated in The Immortal Bobby. It is an important book about an important sports figure that, typically for Rapoport, goes beyond the confines of sports and fits firmly in the context of our culture." --Ira Berkow, sports columnist and author of Red: A Biography of Red Smith "Here is Bobby Jones as you've never seen him, almost fearful in the fires of competition, and Ron Rapoport shows us how that man became a legend." --Dave Kindred, coauthor (with Tom Callahan) of Around the World in 18 Holes

The St Andrews Old Course Starter's Box was sold in a controversial international auction on 10 September 2001, the day before the infamy of the Twin Towers attack. 'Play Away Please' recounts the glory of the little building in St Andrews, 'the home of golf', and tells the tale of those who used its services for 77 continuous years. Unlike many epics, the story does not centre on a rich dynasty or a heroic quest for the truth. Instead, it centres on the production of the perfect round of golf and the global marketing of the Box - one of the most celebrated buildings in the world of sport - as a brand and an icon. The book also chronicles the suspense and notoriety that greeted the Box after its voyage from Scotland to California, by way of the Panama Canal, and the role it assumed as an emotional balm for many in the aftermath of the 11 September atrocity. Alas, nothing is as simple as it seems and miracles are rare. The businessman who bought the Box was imprisoned before it reached Los Angeles, accused of stealing millions from the real-estate development that was to be its home. Eight years later, a happy ending was finally brought about, but only after a healthy dose of gut-wrenching fear and suspense became a part of the story. Supplemented with exclusive photographs, 'Play Away Please' is also a personal story of patronage and odyssey to assure the Box's preservation as the sporting world's consummate symbol of integrity and fair play. Along the way, the author brings to life the unforgettable local characters of Fife, celebrating their customs, lifestyle and unique command of the English language.

Golfers dream of playing the legendary courses of the game: St. Andrews, Augusta National, Pinehurst, Pebble Beach. And anyone who has played the royal and ancient sport is an armchair architect at heart. From alterations for their home course to visions of their very own backyard dream course, most golfers would love to test their hands at course design. What makes certain courses timeless? Unlike the venues of other popular recreational sports like tennis and racquetball, whose playing fields are bound by strict measurements that do not vary, each golf course is unique. Offering an endless topographical variety, from short to long, flat or hilly, wet or dry, every course represents a compelling blend of risks versus rewards, with decisions and challenges to test every golfer's game and mental toughness. Combining Geoff Shackelford's informative narrative with detailed illustrations by architect Gil Hanse, Grounds for Golf explains the fundamentals of golf course design in an understandable and entertaining style. Modern photographs, anecdotal sidebars, and witty quotations augment a course design primer that will enhance readers' enjoyment of golf's lore while introducing the fundamentals of course design. By explaining the golf course from the ground up, Grounds for Golf will not only help readers in their understanding of the game, but will help their games themselves.

EasyTalk is designed to help many millions of yearly visitors (business and pleasure) to the United States, the many business owners throughout the World who want to take part in the giant U.S. economy, the slightly over 1 million new legal immigrants to the U.S. every year and the millions of resident professionals from the last dozen years or more. Many formerly foreign medical folks in the one of the World’s largest Medical Centers, for example, who asked me to compile a book so they can at least enjoy going to the grocery store, do other shopping or their jobs better. Underlying EasyTalk is the little understood Science of Phonology (hearing and listening) expressed in common, simplified language to achieve these goals. The book’s area of phonology focuses on short and long sounds of our alphabets vowels as they modify conversation syllables in talking or listening to others.

I was the nicest guy in the world. The kind of guy who gives up his seat for women who aren’t even pregnant. And all it had got me was a dead-end job, a crappy apartment and a dog that treated me as its bitch. So one day I decided to become a totally different man. A rock-hard alpha male who fights to win, makes his own rules and doesn’t know the word sorry. An asshole. The worst thing? It worked! Here you’ll discover my revolutionary programme for assholism, including: · Essential body language – don’t smile, unless others are in pain · Workplace etiquette – taking credit for everything, except mistakes · Diet and exercise – the power of red meat, energy drinks and hitting below the belt · Relationships – how to avoid getting burned, even if your wife is a trained chef (like mine) · Feelings – the only luxury you can’t afford This is the story of my journey into jerkhood. Solly S Way An Australian Story written by Ron Thomas and has been published by Ron Thomas this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with categories.

The Solly Trilogy is a tale of three generations, from a boy’s enlistment as cabin boy on a Yankee packet ship, the Delaware Belle, plying between Plymouth and New York in the early nineteenth century, through the drought, conflict and financial strife of the 1890’s in Australia to the impact on ordinary folk of the great war and its aftermath. The story is based around the lives of ordinary people of three generations surviving a world that was changing faster than at any time before. It was an era in which the world was shrinking and the affairs of men of diverse nations began to break down centuries-old barriers of class and inherited wealth. We denizens of the 21st century can easily forget that the accomplishments of every generation are built upon those of generations that came before them. Similarly, the values we hold dear were first learned at the knees of our parents. The Solly Trilogy is about a time not just before aircraft, the computer and the internet, but before labour-saving devices we take for granted today had been invented. How did people live in times such as these? These were resourceful people, adaptable people in times that required a surfeit of both of these admirable qualities. Solly’s Trilogy is designed to be read in any order, but it is suggested that you begin with ‘Solly’s Way’, the story of Solly’s arrival at Wallangulla as an old man and his impact on a struggling Australian outback family. ‘Solly’s Legacy’ tells of the legacy of caring, respect and ingenuity the old man left for the next generation. Finally, ‘Solly’s Journey’ completes the loop by telling the story of a cabin boy whose travels under sail, as he grows to manhood, lead him to cross great oceans of the world. After travelling the American west, a shipwreck brings him to a land down under where he finds a wide brown land worth exploring. The Solly Trilogy is set in a period when events in a more remote Europe changed life in Australia. Today, events before the Great War seem like some far-off good old days when life in the Australian outback was simple and wholesome. I’m grateful to my grandfather and his mates who loved a yarn about the old days and could no doubt spin a few tall ones to a gullible lad. They helped me gain many valuable insights into how it really was back then and became the inspiration behind the Solly Trilogy.
