FIRST, there is an error. Chapter I title should be FAMILY not BOOT CAMP IN SAN DIEGO. My mother, unknown to me, kept my several hundred letters home during WWII as well as those of my two brothers and sister and when I found them thought them worth publishing. We were what was known as a Blue Star Family of Four. The Gold Stars were for those killed in action. While I don´t have the figures I doubt there was a large number of families with four on active duty during WW II. We were a very patriotic family. First, my elder brother, Sam, joined in January, 1942, shortly after Pearl Harbor. I followed in June of that year, my sister entered the Waves in 1943 and my younger brother the Army Air Force in 1944. We all wrote many letters, however, most here in are mine as I have access only to those my siblings wrote to me. The Navy is viewed primarily through my letters as I was transferred first to San Diego, California for Boot Camp. Subsequently orders sent me to Lakehurst, New Jersey for training in Aerology, i.e. weather forecasting. Upon graduation I was assigned to duty in Houma, Louisiana which was a LTA base whose airships scouted the gulf for German submarines. Later I was ordered to officers training, became an Ensign and served on the U.S.S. Tanner, a hydrographic survey ship. Brother Sam served in the pacific between New Calidonia and Australia. Sister Jane became a Link Trainer, i.e. she trained pilots and was stationed in Atlanta, Georgia. Brother John became a pilot, but the war being over he saw no active duty. However, he decided to make a career in the military and saw more than enough action in Viet Nam to satisfy even him. Following is the first letter I wrote home from Boot Camp in San Diego.

Charles Everett Roseberry joined the United States Army in 1942 in part because he was single whereas his brother, William Chester Roseberry, was married. Charles served overseas in Africa, Italy, France and Germany. William Roseberry was drafted into the Army in 1944 just months before the birth of his second son on D-Day. William served in Italy in the North Appenines and Po River campaigns. Both brothers wrote regularly to their sister, Margaret Roseberry Lawton of Radford, Virginia who saved their letters for over 50 years before giving them to their children and grandchildren. The letters are not descriptions of the war, which would have been censored, but the concerns of two young men from a small southwest Virginia town finding themselves overseas and away from their families. Topics range from family matters to the capture or deaths of friends and a recurring theme is each brother's concern for the other.

Up to 750,000 Mexican American men served in World War II, earning more Medals of Honor and other decorations in proportion to their numbers than any other ethnic group. Mexican American women entered the workforce on the home front, supporting the war effort and earning good wages for themselves and their families. But the contributions of these men and women have been largely overlooked as American society celebrates the sacrifices and achievements of the "Greatest Generation." To bring their stories out of the shadows, this book gathers eleven essays that explore the Mexican American experience in World War II from a variety of personal and scholarly perspectives. The book opens with accounts of the war's impact on individuals and families. It goes on to look at how the war affected school experiences; how Mexican American patriotism helped to soften racist attitudes; how Mexican Americans in the Midwest, unlike their counterparts in other regions of the country, did not experience greater opportunities as a result of the war; how the media exposed racist practices in Texas; and how Mexican nationals played a role in the war effort through the Bracero program and through the Mexican government's championing of Mexican Americans' rights. As a whole, the collection reveals that World War II was the turning point that gave most Mexican Americans their first experience of being truly included in American society, and it confirms that Mexican Americans of the "Greatest Generation" took full advantage of their new opportunities as the walls of segregation fell.
