This book tells the story of the dissident imaginary of samizdat activists, the political culture they created, and the pivotal role that culture had in sustaining the resilience of the oppositional movement in Poland between 1976 and 1990. This unlicensed print culture has been seen as one of the most emblematic social worlds of dissent. Since the Cold War, the audacity of harnessing obsolete print technology known as samizdat to break the modern monopoly of information of the party-state has fascinated many, yet this book looks beyond the Cold War frame to reappraise its historical novelty and significance. What made that culture resilient and rewarding, this book argues, was the correspondence between certain set of ideas and media practices: namely, the form of samizdat social media, which both embodied and projected the prefigurative philosophy of political action, asserting that small forms of collective agency can have a transformative effect on public life here and now, and are uniquely capable of achieving a democratic new beginning. This prefigurative vision of the transition from communism had a fundamental impact on the broader oppositional movement. Yet, while both the rise of Solidarity and the breakthrough of 1989 seemed to do justice to that vision, both pivotal moments found samizdat social media activists making history that was not to their liking. Back in the day, their estrangement was overshadowed by the main axis of contention between the society and the state. Foregrounding the internal controversies they protagonized, this book adds nuance to our understanding of the broader legacy of dissent and its relevance for the networked protests of today.

Obecność plakatów wyborczych jest elementem rytuału demokracji. Należą one do współczesnej ikonosfery, są traktowane jako irytujący, ale konieczny rekwizyt demokratycznego spektaklu. Czas ich życia w przestrzeni publicznej jest krótki – pojawiają się w kampaniach wyborczych zaledwie na kilka tygodni. Po ich zakończeniu są usuwane przez nadawców (zgodnie z przepisami powinno to nastąpić w ciągu 30 dni od ogłoszenia wyniku wyborów), zaklejane następnymi reklamami albo zdzierane w części bądź w całości przez konkurencję polityczną lub publiczność. Ze wstępu Autorka stara się nie tracić z pola widzenia głównej idei, iż świat, w którym żyjemy, jest rzeczywistością nastawioną na interpretację, a więc sens semiosfery wynika z wzajemnego sprzężenia nadawczo-odbiorczego teksto-obrazów, wśród których upływa nasze życie zwane „uczestnictwem w kulturze”. Z recenzji prof. Wojciecha Burszty Autorka poddaje analizie zarówno znaki i symbole graficzne obecne na plakatach, jak ich język. Zwraca uwagę ,że ów „test wyborczy” podlegał ewolucji wraz ze zmianami zachodzącymi w demokratycznym życiu publicznym. Od odwołań do najszerszej wspólnoty narodowej, której desygnatem była odmieniana w 1989 r. przez wszystkie przypadki „Polska”, poprzez wyodrębnienie stanowisk poszczególnych sił politycznych reprezentujących konkretne wartości i wskazywanie ich wroga, do komunikatów maksymalnie ogólnych, nastawionych na pozyskanie jak najszerszego poparcia dla haseł, które trudno zakwestionować. Podstawowym celem książki jest opisanie czasu politycznego w świadomości społecznej, jego cech oraz różnych orientacji temporalnych wytworzonych i wykorzystywanych w dyskursie politycznym przez polskie elity symboliczne po 1989 roku. Zadaniem autora było także wyjaśnienie sposobów „wykorzystania” kategorii czasowych do tworzenia ówczesnej rzeczywistości politycznej czy też funkcjonowania społeczeństwa z wykorzystaniem kategorii temporalnych. (…) Główna tematyka pracy koncentruje się wokół kilku podstawowych pojęć, które określają badaną rzeczywistość: zmiany społecznej, czasu społecznego, elit symbolicznych oraz wykorzystania przez nie kategorii temporalnych do zbudowania uprzywilejowanych w dyskursie politycznym reprezentacji społecznych. Wynika z tego podstawowa teza niniejszej pracy. Głosi ona, że kategorie temporalne służyły polskim elitom symbolicznym do „kontrolowania” rzeczywistości poprzez instrumentalne działania zmniejszania lub zwiększania w społeczeństwie poczucia społecznego lęku. Manipulacje były niekiedy najbardziej skuteczną metodą tworzenia dominacji politycznej poprzez narzucanie ówczesnej sytuacji politycznej własnej definicji temporalnej. Z Wprowadzenia Opublikowanie tej pracy będzie wydarzeniem w polskiej literaturze politologicznej, która jak dotąd prawie całkowicie pomijała analizę temporalną i z tego powodu była uboższa zarówno pod względem merytorycznym, jak i warsztatowym. Na tym polu polska politologia ustępowała nie tylko nauce filozoficznej, ale także socjologii, która znacznie wcześniej zastosowała metodę temporalną do wyjaśnienia czy chociażby zrozumienia zjawisk i procesów społecznych, w tym także politycznych. Autor ukazuje istotę i rolę czasu w ujęciu filozoficznym i socjologicznym, jak również wskazuje – głównie na konkretnym przykładzie analizy „zmiany społecznej” – na rolę kategorii temporalnych w tym procesie, a ponadto na sposoby wykorzystania „czasu społecznego” przez elity symboliczne do kontrolowania społeczeństwa. Uczynienie „zmiany społecznej” głównym przedmiotem analizy było przedsięwzięciem ze wszech miar uzasadnionym, bowiem „zmiana” zawsze następuje w czasie i nie można tego elementu z niej wykluczyć. In this study of the mechanisms of transitional justice in Poland, Frances Millard asks: How does society come to terms with its past? How should it punish the perpetrators of oppression and acknowledge its victims? In the former communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe the task of answering these questions came down to the need to eliminate the communist parties' hold over the state, the economy and society in order to move towards democracy. Millard argues that the key step in achieving this was uncovering the truth about the previous regime's past, prosecuting the perpetrators of past crimes and providing compensation and restitution for its victims. Through the specific case of Poland, Millard provides a comprehensive assessment of the mechanisms and institutions used to achieve this, such as lustration, law enforcement through a Constitutional Tribunal and institutions dedicated to dealing with the past such as the Institute of National Remembrance. Crucially, these processes have assumed new significance in recent years after the Law and Justice Party came to power in 2015, using transitional justice as a tool of political control which has enabled the restructuring of Polish democracy.
