Xenophon And The History Of His Times written by John Dillery and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-11-01 with History categories.

Xenophon and the History of his Times examines Xenophon's longer historical works, the Hellenica and the Anabasis. Dillery considers how far these texts reflect the Greek intellectual world of the fourth and fifth centuries B.C., rather than focusing on the traditional question of how accurate they are as histories. Through analysis of the complete corpus of Xenophon's work, and the writings of his contemporaries, Xenophon is shown to be very much a man of his times, concerned with topical issues ranging from panhellenism and utopia to how far the gods controlled human history. This book will be valuable reading for students on ancient history courses and for all those interested in Greek political and philosophical thought.

Xenophon’s History recounts nearly fifty turbulent years of warfare in Greece between 411 and 362 BC. Continuing the story of the Peloponnesian War at the point where Thucydides finished his magisterial history, this is a fascinating chronicle of the conflicts that ultimately led to the decline of Greece, and the wars with both Thebes and the might of Persia. An Athenian by birth, Xenophon became a firm supporter of the Spartan cause, and fought against the Athenians in the battle of Coronea. Combining history and memoir, this is a brilliant account of the triumphs and failures of city-states, and a portrait of Greece at a time of crisis.

"Hellenica is Xenophon's chronicle of the history of the Greeks, or the "Hellenes" from 411 to 359 BCE. It is a continuation of Thucydides' narrative, "History of the Peloponnesian War." This history covers the last seven years of the war, and its aftermath. It is one of the few surviving narratives from this period and is generally considered to be the most authoritative. The author Xenophon was born in Athens about 430BCE. It may be inferred from passages in the Hellenica that he fought at Arginusae (406), and that he was present at the return of Alcibiades (408), the trial of the Generals, and the overthrow of the Thirty. In 401, being invited by his friend Proxenus to join the expedition of the younger Cyrus against his brother, Artaxerxes II of Persia, he at once accepted the offer. Of the expedition itself, he has given a full and detailed account in his "Anabasis: The March Up Country," sometimes called "The Persian Expedition." At Coroneia (394) he fought with the Spartans against the Athenians and Thebans, for which his fellow citizens decreed his banishment. The Spartans provided a home for him at Scillus in Ellis until Sparta and Athens became allies whereupon he then made his home at Corinth. The year of his death is thought to be 355 BCE. This restored translation contains all 7 complete books of Xenophon's narrative, including an indexed Table of Contents listing page numbers for each year of the war. This edition is recommended for teachers and students of history, classical literature and languages. Excerpt from the Table of Contents All Rights Reserved Book I BCE 411: Thymochares arrived from Athens... 1 BCE 410: The Athenians escaped to Cardia... 2 BCE 409: The Athenians fortified Thoricus... 4 BCE 408: The temple of Athena set on fire... 8 BCE 407: Phamabazus passes the winter at Gordium... 10 BCE 406: Callicratidas replaces Lysander... 16

In the fourth century B.C., Xenophon wrote a history of his time, intended to serve as a continuation of Thucydides' Peloponnesian Wars. The present text is the first to be based upon the four important manuscript witnesses determined to be significant in published studies by Professor Jackson. The result is a text free of many unfounded readings accepted into earlier editions and an economical critical apparatus. Professor Doty's new idiomatic English translation accompanies the Greek text mirrors Xenophon's unadorned style and is the first to make use of the new text.

Xenophon On Government written by Xenophon and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-05-17 with Art categories.

Xenophon of Athens was a pupil of Socrates and a philosopher in his own right. He wrote two of the texts included in this volume, the Hiero (On Tyranny) and the Constitution of the Spartans. The third, the Constitution of the Athenians, is found under Xenophon's name alongside the other two in the manuscripts. The works represent three distinct types of government (the rule of one man in tyranny and kingship, the rule of law in the mixed constitution of the Spartans, and the rule of the masses in the Athenian democracy), but there are common features throughout. This volume presents an introduction discussing Xenophon's views on government in the context of his general political thought, drawing particularly on his Socratic work Memorabilia, and a commentary on the Greek text of each work aimed primarily at advanced undergraduates and graduate students.

Xenophon was a Greek soldier who played a key role in several military skirmishes and attacks throughout his life. Later in his life, he began to write down his recollections of these battles and other key political and cultural events, thus becoming one of ancient Greece's most important historians. Hellenica offers Xenophon's first-hand account of many events in the Peloponnesian War. It is the only surviving account of the final years of the war and the period immediately following the war's conclusion.
