This volume constitutes the first large-scale collaborative reflection on Xenophon’s Anabasis, gathering experts on Greek historiography and Xenophon. It is structured in three sections: the first section provides a linear reading of the Anabasis through chapters on select episodes (from Book 1 through Book 7), including the opening, Cyrus’ characterisation, the meeting of Socrates and Xenophon, Xenophon’s leadership, the marches through Armenia and along the Black Sea coast and the service under Seuthes in Thrace. The second section offers an in-depth exploration of hitherto overlooked recurrent themes. Based on new approaches and scholarly trends, it focuses on topics such as the concept of friendship, the speeches of characters other than Xenophon, the suffering of the human body, the role of rumour and misrepresentation, and the depiction of emotions. The third section offers a more thorough investigation of the manifold reception of this work (in Antiquity, Byzantium, Renaissance, modern period, in cinema studies and illustrations). Finally, in acknowledgement of the Anabasis’ long history as a pedagogical text, the volume contains an envoi on the importance and benefits of teaching Xenophon and the Anabasis, more specifically.

Xenophon has for long, and understandably, enjoyed a privileged position as a reliable source on Sparta. Commander of a grand military expedition of Sparta's devising, and a dependent of Sparta's influential king Agesilaos, Xenophon knew Sparta from the inside, and - as himself an Athenian in exile - was well placed to comment on Sparta's difference. The simplicity of his Greek style has a perfume of honesty. And yet... Recent research has with increasing force called into doubt Xenophon's motives and truthfulness - especially as regards Sparta. Analysis of his Hellenica reveals much evasion and euphemism about Sparta's failings - complicated by occasional outbursts against the iniquity of Spartan imperialism. His euphemistic Constitution of the Lakedaimonians (itself containing such an outburst), and his near-hagiography of the dead Agesilaos, have variously evoked trust and suspicion in historians. This book, by a distinguished team of specialists in Spartan history, is the first of a short series from CPW, approaching Spartan reality by way of close analysis of our main contemporary Greek sources: their access, their biases, the literary structure and the genre of their works.

Durch eine umfassende Analyse der Entscheidungsnarrative und Handlungsmotive in den Hellenika und der Anabasis und unter Berücksichtigung seiner weiteren Schriften wird Xenophons Problematisierung von Entscheidungen beleuchtet. Hierfür schildert er in seinen historischen Schriften in der Regel gute und schlechte Entscheidungen sowie deren Konsequenzen. Xenophons besonderes Interesse liegt dabei in den verschiedenen, teilweise auch außerhalb des eigenen Einflussbereiches liegenden, Faktoren, die Entscheidungen sowie deren Ausgang positiv oder negativ beeinflussen und die somit einen großen Einfluss auf das menschliche Dasein und das historische Geschehen haben. Er hat hierfür ein kohärentes Modell guter und schlechter Entscheidungsfindung sowie damit zusammenhängender weiterer Probleme entwickelt, das sich in all seinen Schriften niederschlägt. Auf diese Weise werden sowohl Erkenntnisse über Xenophons Geschichts- und Weltbild als auch auf die Wertvorstellungen des intendierten Publikums gewonnen.
