Diploma Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1,7, University of Ulm, 34 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In today's world, there are mainly two types of communication networks: circuitswitched networks and packet-switched networks. The current telephone networks are mostly based on the circuit-switched networks, whereas the Internet is mainly based on the packetswitched networks, which are also called IP networks. However, there is a strong tendency to combine both of these networks, which points to the direction that the IP networks are going to replace services provided by current telephone networks. This would eventually mean that IP networks might replace the telephone networks, in the future. Following are some reasons why IP networks seem to replace the circuit-switched networks: - First of all, the IP networks provide cheaper communication. Considering that the Internet access is nearly free, the cost advantage of IP networks gets clearer 25]. - Secondly, IP networks provide the ability of integrating the data and voice applications, and even some other applications, like video-conferencing, integrated voice mail, e-mail, and the like 26]. - Another important reason is that IP networks allow open implementation of end systems. With a reasonable programming knowledge everybody could implement an end system for IP networks. In the classical telephony end users cannot implement any end system, but have to use whatever provided by the service providers. 27]

The present information age is enabled by telecommunications and information technology and the continued convergence of their services, technologies and business models. Within telecommunications, the historic separations between fixed networks, mobile telephone networks and data communications are diminishing. Similarly, information technology and enterprise communications show convergence with telecommunications. These synergies are captured in the concept of Next Generation Networks that result from evolution to new technologies, enabling new services and applications. Network Convergence creates a framework to aid the understanding of Next Generation Networks, their potential for supporting new and enhanced applications and their relationships with legacy networks. The book identifies and explains the concepts and principles underlying standards for networks, services and applications. Network Convergence: Gives comprehensive coverage of packet multimedia, enterprise networks, third generation mobile communications, OSA/Parlay and developments in fixed networks. Gives an integrated view of diverse information and communications systems and technology through a common NGN Framework. Delves into protocols, APIs and software processes for supporting services and applications in advanced networks. Discusses a variety of applications of telecommunications supporting IT and IT enhanced by communications. Follows developments in operations support systems standards and links these to next generation networks. Includes a wealth of examples, use cases, tables and illustrations that help reinforce the material for students and practitioners. Features an accompanying website with PowerPoint presentations, glossary, web references, tutorial problems, and 'learn more' pages. This essential reference guide will prove invaluable to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, academics and researchers. It will also be of interest to professionals working for telecommunications network operators, equipment vendors, telecoms regulators, and engineers who wish to further their knowledge of next generation networks.

This book provides the first overview of the service technologies available to telecoms operators working in a post-convergence world. Previous books have focused either on computer networks or on telecoms networks. This is the first to bring the two together and provide a single reference source for information that is currently only to be found in disparate journals, tool specifications and standards documents. In order to provide such broad coverage of the topic in a structured and logical fashion, the book is divided into 3 parts. The first part looks at the underlying network support for services and aims to explain the technology that makes the user-visible services possible. This section covers multimedia networking, both traditional (legacy) and future (softswitch) call processing, intelligent networks, the Internet, and Wireless networks. Part 2 deals with how these services may be analysed and managed. Chapters cover topics such as commercial issues, service management, quality of service, security, standards and APIs. Part 3 concludes the book by looking ahead at evolving technologies and more speculative possibilities, discussing the kinds of services that may be possible in the future and the technologies that will support them. * Focuses is on how the technology supports the services, rather than on technology for its own sake * Contributors drawn from both academia and industry (companies such as Marconi, BT, Telcordia, Cisco, Analysys) to give both theoretical and real-world perspectives * Unique singe-reference source for a wide range of material currently found only in disparate papers, specs and documentation * Covers brand new technologies such as JAIN, JTAPI, Parlay, IP, multimedia networking, active networks, WAP, wireless LANs, agent-based services, etc.

The IMS is the foundation architecture for the next generation of mobile phones, wireless-enabled PDAs, PCs, and the like. IMS delivers multimedia content (audio, video, text, etc.) over all types of networks. For network engineers/administrators and telecommunications engineers it will be essential to not only understand IMS architecture, but to also be able to apply it at every stage of the network design process. This book will contain pragmatic information on how to engineer IMS networks as well as an applications-oriented approach for the engineering and networking professionals responsible for making IMS function in the real world. - Describes the convergence of wireless IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) with other networks, including wireline and cable - Discusses building interfaces for end users and IMS applications servers - Explores network management issues with IMS
