Il Progetto The Archaeology of Regime Change. Sicily in Transition. The project The Archaeology of Regime Change. Sicily in Transition. 6th-13th centuries (SICTRANSIT – ERC advanced grant 693600) has made it possible to study with a wide range of archaeological and scientific analyses the contents of pits, wells, latrines and silos excavated in 1997 in the historic centre of the city of Mazara in Sicily. The richness and diversity of the materials found, the integrity of the contexts in which they were unearthed and their chronological span (from the end of the 7th to the 16th century) proved invaluable in reconstructing consumption, trade, production, food habits and religious taboos in relation to the important social and cultural changes that affected Sicily through the periods of consecutive Byzantine, Muslim, Norman, Swabian and Aragonese government. The material history of Mazara, the second most important city after Palermo in the Islamic period and an influential bishopric under the Normans, is here illuminated from the bottom up, starting from the most humble remains of daily life. The relevance of the results obtained for this important city has made it possible to broaden, revise and enhance our knowledge not only of medieval Sicily, but in many ways also of the central Mediterranean area between the end of antiquity and the later Middle Ages.

Modern Conflict And The Senses written by Nicholas J. Saunders and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-16 with Social Science categories.

Modern Conflict and the Senses investigates the sensual worlds created by modern war, focusing on the sensorial responses embodied in and provoked by the materiality of conflict and its aftermath. The volume positions the industrialized nature of twentieth-century war as a unique cultural phenomenon, in possession of a material and psychological intensity that embodies the extremes of human behaviour, from total economic mobilization to the unbearable sadness of individual loss. Adopting a coherent and integrated hybrid approach to the complexities of modern conflict, the book considers issues of memory, identity, and emotion through wartime experiences of tangible sensations and bodily requirements. This comprehensive and interdisciplinary collection draws upon archaeology, anthropology, military and cultural history, art history, cultural geography, and museum and heritage studies in order to revitalize our understandings of the role of the senses in conflict.

The Zemstvo In Russia written by Terence Emmons and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1982-04-30 with History categories.

The essays in this 1982 volume result from a conference held at Stanford University in 1978, assembled to assess the overall character and significance of the prerevolutionary Russian experiment with the principle and practice of local self-government, the zemstvo, over half of its existence, 1864-1918. The unifying theme of the collection is the rejection of the liberal myth of the zemstvo as an instrument of social integration. The chapters focus on the substantive elements of conflict and tension that existed within the zemstvos, especially between the institutions' two principal groups: the landed gentry, who dominated the zemstvo, and the peasants, who constituted the majority of the population and were intended to the beneficiaries of most of the economic and cultural programs, yet had little part in their formation. Based on the contributors' extensive knowledge of their respective subjects, many of them provide information from previously unpublished materials in Soviet and American archives.

In line with the resurgence of interest in the history of archaeology manifested over the past decade, this volume aims to highlight state-of-the art research across several topics and areas, and to stimulate new approaches and studies in the field. With their shared historiographical commitment, the authors, leading scholars and emerging researchers, draw from a wide range of case studies to address major themes such as historical sources and methods; questions of archaeological practices and the practical aspects of knowledge production; ‘visualizing archaeology’ and the multiple roles of iconography and imagery; and ‘questions of identity’ at local, national and international levels.
