Most syntheses in the chemical research laboratory fail and usually require several attempts before proceeding satisfactorily. Failed syntheses are not only discouraging and frustrating, but also cost a lot of time and money. Many failures may, however, be avoided by understanding the structure-reactivity relationship of organic compounds. This textbook highlights the competing processes and limitations of the most important reactions used in organic synthesis. By allowing chemists to quickly recognize potential problems this book will help to improve their efficiency and success-rate. A must for every graduate student but also for every chemist in industry and academia. Contents: 1 Organic Synthesis: General Remarks 2 Stereoelectronic Effects and Reactivity 3 The Stability of Organic Compounds 4 Aliphatic Nucleophilic Substitutions: Problematic Electrophiles 5 The Alkylation of Carbanions 6 The Alkylation of Heteroatoms 7 The Acylation of Heteroatoms 8 Palladium-Catalyzed C-C Bond Formation 9 Cyclizations 10 Monofunctionalization of Symmetric Difunctional Substrates

Following their recognition by GUmbel (1874), lamprophyres were treated for an entire century as little more than obscure curiosities. Although this situation has changed recently, with a flowering of publications and active workers, lamprophyres remain almost the only group of igneous rocks which have not yet received attention in a dedicated monograph. In five exploratory reviews (1977-1987), the writer aimed to set out what was known about these rocks. The lUGS Subcommission on igneous rock systematics had meanwhile presented its nomenclatural framework (Streckeisen 1979). All this has now been overtaken by a recent explosion of interest, epitomized not least by lamprophyres' greater prominence in the 4th International Kimberlite Conference Proceedings. More data have become available since 1985 than over the entire previous century, and it is obviously impossible for such an extraordinary outpouring to be fully reviewed in this first, preliminary book. At the risk of dissatisfying some readers, therefore, this book concentrates on factual matters, and on a broad overview rather than minutiae. Because not even a world map of known lamprophyres was previously available, almost half the book is deliberately taken up by the first global lamprophyre compilation, and its commensurately extensive Bibliography. Such a compendium of largely objective information is believed to be of more immediate interest and lasting value than a premature pottage of petrogenetic polemic. Chapters 1-7 bring previous studies up to date, and concentrate on factual information.

With the increased interest in superconductivity applications through out the world and the necessity of obtaining a firmer understanding of the basic concepts of superconductivity, the editors of the In ternational Cryogenics Monograph series are extremely grateful for the opportunity to add Superconducting Materials to this series. This comprehensive review and summary of superconducting ma terials was originally prepared by the Russian authors in 1969 and has been specifically updated for this series. It is the most thorough review of the literature on this subject that has been made to date. Since advances in the development and use of new superconducting materials are largely associated with the general state and level in the development of the physical theory of superconductivity, the physical chemistry of metals, metallography, metal physics, tech nical physics, and manufacturing techniques, it is hoped that this monograph will provide the stimulus for further advances in all aspects of this exciting field. The editors express their appreciation to the authors, the translators, and Plenum Publishing Corporation for their assistance and continued interest in making this worthy addition to the series possible.

Mathematical Lives written by CLAUDIO BARTOCCI and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-01 with Mathematics categories.

Steps forward in mathematics often reverberate in other scientific disciplines, and give rise to innovative conceptual developments or find surprising technological applications. This volume brings to the forefront some of the proponents of the mathematics of the twentieth century, who have put at our disposal new and powerful instruments for investigating the reality around us. The portraits present people who have impressive charisma and wide-ranging cultural interests, who are passionate about defending the importance of their own research, are sensitive to beauty, and attentive to the social and political problems of their times. What we have sought to document is mathematics’ central position in the culture of our day. Space has been made not only for the great mathematicians but also for literary texts, including contributions by two apparent interlopers, Robert Musil and Raymond Queneau, for whom mathematical concepts represented a valuable tool for resolving the struggle between ‘soul and precision.’

Classics In Total Synthesis Ii written by K. C. Nicolaou and has been published by Wiley-VCH this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-10-17 with Science categories.

Classics in Total Synthesis II is the long awaited sequel to Classics in Total Synthesis, a book that has made its mark as a superb tool for educating students and practitioners alike in the art of organic synthesis since its introduction in 1996. In this highly welcomed second volume, K.C. Nicolaou and Scott A. Snyder discuss in detail the most impressive accomplishments in natural product total synthesis during the 1990s and the first years of the 21st century. While all of the features that made the first volume of Classics so popular and unique as a teaching tool have been maintained, in this new treatise the authors seek to present the latest techniques and advance in organic synthesis as they beautifully describe the works of some of the most renowned synthetic organic chemists of our time. Key features include: Systematically develops domino reactions, cascade sequences, biomimetic strategies, and asymmetric catalysis through the chosen synthesis Discusses cutting edge synthetic technologies in terms of mechanism and scope Presents new reactions, such as olefin metathesis, in mini-review style Includes abundant references for further reading CD with useful teaching material for lecturers is included with hardback version (ISBN 3-527-30685-4) Graduate students, educators, and researchers in the fields of synthetic and medicinal chemistry will wish to have a copy of this book in their collection as an indispensable companion that both augments and supplements the original Classics in Total Synthesis. From the reviews: "... a volume, (...) which any chemist with an interest in synthetic organic chemistry will wish to acquire." –JACS (on the previous volume) "...this superb book (...) will be an essential purchase for many organic chemists." –Nature (on the previous volume) "...Classics II is undoubtedly an excellent bargain that is highly recommended to everybody interested in advanced organic chemistry. One of my co-workers confessed that Classics I was the book on his bedside table while he prepared his thesis defense. Isn't that the highest distinction for a monograph? I have every reason to believe that Classics II will equally stand the selection process by students (and probably their supervisors too)." –Angewandte Chemie, 2004 "Well, there is a new pleasant read for the advanced student and even the experienced. It is the second volume to the established Classics in Total Synthesis and it continues the series extremely well." –ChemBioChem, 2004 "...the real innovation of this volume is the inclusion of alternative pathways to the same target molecule by other researchers. This enables the reader to appreciate that there are also other solutions to certain structural problems than those of the original synthesis. ... Let us hope that K. C. Nicolaou and his associates will present us with these future achievements in the same clear, informative and innovative format they have with the previous two volumes." –Applied Organometallic Chemistry
