Known for its sawmills and gristmills, Yaphank was established in 1726 on the banks of the Carmans River on Long Island. Called Millville until 1844, it was then named Yaphank, "bank of the river." Its two lakes mark the boundaries of the historic district, with Main Street winding between them. Though the mills are long gone, many of the period homes from the 18th and 19th centuries remain, illustrating the history of the village and those who lived there. From the early days of the American Revolution, patriots marched on the Tallmadge Trail, and later, its young men went to fight for the Union cause in the Civil War. In 1871, Suffolk County's first almshouse was built to take care of the less fortunate. As World War I rumblings were heard, nearby Camp Upton-- where Irving Berlin wrote the musical Yip, Yip, Yaphank--drew thousands of soldiers.

This Critical Companion to the American Stage Musical provides the perfect introductory text for students of theatre, music and cultural studies. It traces the history and development of the industry and art form in America with a particular focus on its artistic and commercial development in New York City from the early 20th century to the present. Emphasis is placed on commercial, artistic and cultural events that influenced the Broadway musical for an ever-renewing, increasingly broad and diverse audience: the Gilded Age, the Great Depression, the World War II era, the British invasion in the 1980s and the media age at the turn of the twenty-first century. Supplementary essays by leading scholars provide detailed focus on the American musical's production and preservation, as well as its influence on daily life on the local, national, and international levels. For students, these essays provide models of varying approaches and interpretation, equipping them with the skills and understanding to develop their own analysis of key productions.

Fifty Years After Faulkner written by Jay Watson and has been published by Univ. Press of Mississippi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-04 with Literary Criticism categories.

Contributions by Ted Atkinson, Michael P. Bibler, Deborah Clarke, David A. Davis, David M. Earle, Jason D. Fichtel, Elizabeth Fielder, Joseph Fruscione, Matthew Pratt Guterl, Patrick E. Horn, Cheryl Lester, Jessica Martell, Sharon Monteith, Richard C. Moreland, Alan Nadel, Julie Beth Napolin, François Pitavy, Ramón Saldívar, Hortense J. Spillers, Terrell L. Tebbetts, Zackary Vernon, Randall Wilhelm, and Charles Reagan Wilson These essays examine issues across the wide arc of Faulkner's extraordinary career, from his aesthetic apprenticeship in the visual arts, to late-career engagements with the Cold War, the civil rights movement, and beyond, to the place of death in his artistic vision and the long, varied afterlives he and his writings have enjoyed in literature and popular culture. Contributors deliver stimulating reassessments of Faulkner's first novel, Soldiers' Pay; his final novel, The Reivers; and much of the important work between. Scholars explore how a broad range of elite and lowbrow cultural forms—plantation diaries, phonograph records, pulp magazines—shaped Faulkner's capacious imagination and how his works were translated into such media as film and modern dance. Essays place Faulkner's writings in dialogue with those of fellow twentieth-century authors including W. E. B. Du Bois, Ernest Hemingway, Richard Hall, and Jayne Anne Phillips; locate his work in relation to African American intellectual currents and Global South artistic traditions; and weigh the rewards as well as the risks of dislodging Faulkner from the canonical position he currently occupies. While Faulkner studies has cultivated an image of the novelist as a neglected genius who toiled in obscurity, a look back fifty years to the final months of the author's life reveals a widely traveled and celebrated artist whose significance was framed in national and international as well as regional terms. Fifty Years after Faulkner bears out that expansive view, reintroducing us to a writer whose work retains its ability to provoke, intrigue, and surprise a variety of readerships.

My Life In Pieces Writers Rogues The Road And The Rock written by Ambrose Clancy and has been published by Brick Tower Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-30 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In the foreword to this collection, Robert Lipsyte writes that Ambrose Clancy “can uncoil a sentence like a silken rope, snap it like a whip, tie up a complicated thought. He can write long, he can write short, he can build a case, he can murmur a spooky tale …” In a career spanning four decades, Clancy’s feature writing for major publications—including GQ, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times—has profiled legendary writers, politicians (and other rogues); brought sharp-eyed views of Ireland, Venice, London, Amsterdam, Frank McCourt’s Limerick, the New York of Harlem, Queens and the Lower East Side; spent time with a Belfast prize fighter during The Troubles; and hiked a remote peninsula in Greece to stay in mountain monasteries. Clancy covers everything from Monster Truck rallies to a Long Island “Drunk Train,” and takes us to a small island community, examining its history of slavery, small town gossips, an unsolved homicide, and people who have enchanted him along the way. The New York Times, reviewing an earlier work by Clancy, noted his “series of gripping and vividly narrated events …” This is a collection with a forceful narrative drive. One to dip in and out of to gain cultural insights from the last 40 years by an accomplished pro, one who knows the duty of a writer is to inform, illuminate, and just as importantly, to entertain.
